Police cancel Hamas-run press conference over Mugrabi dig
Event canceled due to prohibition on Hamas activity in Israel; Muslim, Christian clerics slated to speak.
By The Associated Press and Haaretz ServiceIsraeli police on Wednesday banned a press conference by opponents to Israeli excavation work near the Temple Mount in Jerusalem's Old City.
Police went to the Commodore Hotel in East Jerusalem and delivered an order canceling the event because it was organized by Hamas, whose activities are prohibited in Israel, police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby said.
The mufti of Jerusalem, the leader of Israel's Islamic Movement and a Roman Orthodox archbishop in the city were to speak at the hotel against the renovation of the Mugrabi ramp leading to the complex known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary.
The leader of the Islamic Movement, Ra'ad Salah, has organized protests at the site and police, after arresting him, banned him from the area for more than two months.
The work, which began with an archaeological dig earlier this month, has sparked protests throughout the Muslim world.
Israel says the dig is meant to salvage archaeological finds ahead of the construction of a new pedestrian walkway up to the hilltop compound, to replace one damaged in a 2004 snowstorm. Israeli archaeologists insist there is no danger to the compound.

"NO other country in the world that can prevent a native person from living in his homeland" Question: Do you mean like the forced displacement of 16.5 million European "native" people from their homelands in post-World War II orchestrated by the victorious Western Allies of the US, Britian, France and the Soviet Union?
"Thats what Israel wants to quash any knowldege of what they are planning at the Temple Mount." Right. Which is why the gov't is planning to install cameras to document the construction? Hamas and Salah are just inciting. "The Mosque is in danger! The Mosque is in danger!" Right. Meanwhile the Waqf's done more construction under the Temple Mount over that last years than G*ddamn Herod.
Absolutely nothing do with Hamas. Just anohter figment of minds that would know the difference between Orthodox and Roman Catholic, or Melkite from Maronite. Just another chance for them tomake anti-Christian statements. They simpy can't live without their hatreds, no matter, every one gets painted with the same brush even when they dont know what they are talking about.
Hundreds of years? huh? palestinian nationalism is dated to around the early 20th century - 1920 or so. Up until then and even after that (till around 1967) there is no trace of historical or cultural palestinian society. never ever a government, never even sought a government - there simply was no such people requiring such a thing. Yet with all this, we are in a process to provide this newly formed "people" a country (which they already have in Jordan). go figure - "hundreds of years of ancestory..." believe what you want.
TO YAKOV NO 4 TRUE THE VATICAN SHOULD RETURN THE VERY VALUABLE PAINTING,S STOLEN FROM JEWISH HOMES IN WORLD WAR 2.TO THEIR RIGHTFUL OWNERS RIGHT DOWN THE LINE.
There is no such a thing. Yeh, right this conference at the Commadore Hotel would really be a gatheering of the terrorists. Rigfht. What bullshit. Censorship and shut them up. Thats what Israel wants to quash any knowldege of what they are planning at the Temple Mount. What happend byu the way to this Turkish commission that was coming to check out what Israel is trying to get away with?
Another example that we really live in the only democracy in the Middle East. Oh, how proud we are!
Have no right to call a press conference in any other country without consulting with that other country first. How many other countries would allow that one? NONE!! Why? Because their is a diplomatic chain to follow. Hamas never learns. No right to assert their authority in Israel. None whatsoever!!
See Natan reply #2.
They have no rights in Jerusalem. Hamas is part of a foreign government. Would Canada allow a foreign government to hold a press conference without the Canadian government being represented? I think not. It is absurd to assume this is a part of any democratic action.
"Sheik Salah as a person, who ignites a flame of hate to Jewish state, must be banned to live in Israel." Vital, your name suggests that you are NOT a native to this part of the world. French, perhaps? (1) Sheik Salah can trace his Palestinian ancestry, and its Palestinian roots, for hundreds of years if not more. Can you do the same? (2) There is NO other country in the world that can prevent a native person from living in his homeland. Even mass murderers are thrown in jail if their guilt is proven in a court of law. Finally, why is it that people like you who have come from supposedly democratic countries (where you enjoyed civil rights and protection under the law) are most willing to abandon these democratic values when they come to Israel?
under false pretexts. Vive la democracie!
JEALOUSY OF THE JEWS JEALOUSY WILL KILL THEM ALL. OH THE ENEMIES OF THE JEWS ARE SO JEALOUS
Sheik Salah as a person, who ignites a flame of hate to Jewish state, must be banned to live in Israel.
The Roman Catholic Church and the Muslims have a common history of genocide against Jews and centuries of trying to destroy Judaism. Their common criminal history makes them natural allies in trying to hide the truth of the Jewish ownership and presence in Jerusalem, our capital city which both Roman Catholics and Muslims have invaded, stolen, and continue occupying. Roman Catholics have the Vatican, Muslims have Mecca. They need to go back to their own holy cities. They should stop trying to hold onto to interests and properties they stole from Jews in Jerusalem. Both the Koran and the New Testament have injunctions against theft, except for property Christians and Muslims stole from Jews, of course. Time for the Roman Catholics and Muslims to stop the hypocrisy and return stolen Jewish property and stop squatting in our holy capital city.
of the country, ruled by Hamas, and if these people want to express themselves, let them do so in Gaza, and while there, they should remain there. This is not a joke. I actually mean it.
You ask a good question. The answer is simple. The Roman Orthodox Archbishop knows very well, that the artifacts that will be found will show/prove the Jewish historical connection to the area. This of course is 180 degrees counter to the Roman Orthodox Archbishop's religious Gestalt. That these excavations will prove the intimate Jewish historical and religious connection to the Temple Mount is precisely the reason that the Muslim world is so violently opposed. The correct answer to these protests is one simple word: TOUGH!
