Poland refuses to build shelter for Auschwitz cat

Museum that runs the camp rejects animal rights group's call to build shelter for cat living on premises.

By News Agencies Tags: Israel news

A cat living at the former Nazi death camp of Auschwitz has caused fur to fly between an animal care group and Polish authorities refusing to allow a shelter to be built for it.

The grey and white cat, known variously as Rudolf or Bruno despite being female, can often be seen sitting near the notorious "Arbeit macht frei" ("Work sets you free") sign at the entrance to the cat.

She has seemed unperturbed by an unusually cold winter in Poland that has seen night temperatures dip as low as minus 34 Celsius (minus 29 Fahrenheit).

The museum that runs the camp has rejected a call from the group For Animals to build a cat shelter, saying other animals also live at the site and that visitors are its main priority.

"All we asked for was to erect a shelter, but we were refused," said Joanna Zaremba of the For Animals foundation.

A museum employee tried in vain to give the animal a home.

"The cat was not used to being indoors and the employee had to let her out to feel free. She came straight back (to the camp) like a boomerang, back to the 'Arbeit macht frei' gate," said Adam Cyra, another member of staff.

The cat is believed to have arrived at the camp about six months ago and started to attract the attention of visitors after Polish newspapers and websites reported on the animal's attachment to the site and the campaign to build a shelter."

I came especially to see this cat as I've heard so much about it in the local media," one Polish visitor told Reuters Television. "I'm ready to adopt the cat and give her a home."

While the cat has been staying near the entrance, a gang stole the "Arbeit macht frei" sign. Polish police later recovered the sign, cut into three pieces, and arrested five suspects over the crime.

Up to 1.5 million people, mostly Jews, perished at Auschwitz during the Nazi occupation of Poland in World War Two. The site, near the town of Oswiecim in southern Poland, received more than one million visitors last year.

On Thursday, Swedish authorities say a man wanted in Poland in connection with the theft of a infamous sign at Auschwitz has been arrested in Stockholm.

Prosecutor Agnetha Hilding Qvarnstrom says 34-year-old Anders Hogstrom was arrested Thursday on a European arrest warrant.

Qvarnstrom says Hogstrom will be appointed a defense lawyer and questioned by Swedish investigators before authorities can decide on extraditing him to Poland.

There was enough cruelty there. Have a little compassion and give the cat a little shelter.

"The "right" thing of course, is to deny any permits for shelter construction, evict her from any nooks and crannies she uses for shelter and block them off, bring in dogs to chase and harass her, and prevent her return if she leaves the compound" And set up "catblocks" for her to pass through, not to mention armed guards watching...

If we care not for this cat, how can we care for people. Think about it for awhile, and yes cats kill birds. It's not hate but their nature. People hate but hopefully we can change, it's called free will. Like your hate for cats, and maybe all life if thats all you can say.

It's a cat. It's a wild cat. Therefore it doesn't need shelter. Eventually it will die of disease or get killed by a wild dog or another cat. That's nature. What in nature created "cat people" I have no idea. So a cat lives at the site of one of the worst massacres in human history? So what. There are probably pidgeons there too. Shall we build a bird box? How about some facts about cats: they are responsible for over 2/3rds of the decline in wild bird species in the UK alone. Feeding cats is a billion dollar industry. 1 billion HUMAN BEINGS live on less than a $1 a day and 500 million are permenantly on the brink of starving to death. In short. Cat people are crazy.

prophecy believes that this world is the lords world and that in this world his goodness and truth will yet be vindicated hence the neviim prophesies of a definitive future arising out of and organically connected with the present the apocalyptic writer despairs of the present and directs his hopes to the future to a new world standing in essential opposition to the present this becomes a dualistic principle which though it can largely be accounted for by the interaction of certain inner tendencies and outward sorrowful experience on the part of judaism this principle which shows itself in the conception that the various nations are under angelic rulers who are in a greater or less degree in rebellion against the lord as in daniel and enoch grows in strength with each succeeding age till at last satan is conceived as the ruler of this world or the god of this age.

the jewish mysticism hold that not only are the words giving a divine message but indicate a far greater message that extends beyond them thus they hold that even as small mark as a kotzo shel yod the serif of the hebrew letter yod the smallest letter or decorative markings or repeated words were put there by the lord to teach scores of lessons this is regardless of whether that yod appears in the phrase I AM the lord or whether it appears in and the lord spoke unto moses saying, one kabbalistic interpretation is that the torah constitutes one long name of the lord and that it was broken up into words so that human minds can understand it while this is effective since it accords with our human reason it is not the only way that the text can be broken up.

They need to provide her a shelter in compensation for her rodent removal services. But that would be the "left" thing to do. The "right" thing of course, is to deny any permits for shelter construction, evict her from any nooks and crannies she uses for shelter and block them off, bring in dogs to chase and harass her, and prevent her return if she leaves the compound.

Yes, Israel is known as a compassionate state. Take for example the number of African refugees that were granted shelter in Israel. Or the number of medical treatments given to Palestinians who are not only willing to kill Jews, but ready to do it. Take for instance the Israeli hospital that was sent to Haiti a couple of days after the quake, much more better equipped and prepared for the emergency than even the American. Lots of lives were saved thanks to the compassionate and professional work of Israeli volunteers. What happens is that you only read what you want and what you please.

I hope you are being sarcastic. Because, if not, what you describe as "honouring the dead," I would describe as spitting on their grave. Never mind that pragmatic consideration that the money wasted in your scheme could be better spent on real food aid. Perhaps you have forgotten how the Nazis sold their persecution of the Jews to their followers and fellow Germans. Jews were described as less than human, below even many other animals. It does take any special love of cats or other creatures to see that from this simple fact, to kill the cat for being a nuisance, on the justification that it is below regard, is one of the most radically abhorrent things you could do in light of the memory of those that died there. Imagine how differently things might have gone had the Germans, even in the face of the lies they were told, had shown more of the compassion you would deny this cat.

There are so many starving people in the world - most of them would love a cat steak for dinner. Hunt the cat down and send its meat to underdeveloped countries. Saving a human life in this way would honor the Auschwitz dead.

    1) Find out where the cat lives. 2) Make sure the spot is weatherproofed enough to be survivable. 3)Find out who is responsible for the area. 4) Offer him or her some local pesos to make sure the cat is not bothered.

I believe the cat may be there for a reason, allowing it to live there and maybe even giving it a little help in no way violates the sanctity of the place. In a place where such unmitigated evil was perpetrated against against our ancestors it would be a little bit of beauty and maybe even some company for all the tortured souls of the people that were murdered there and are still there.

Auschwitz was a place of hate. Why not let it be a place of love for all that died. This cat wants to live there, Who are we to question his ways.I think if I had been there,I'd like to remember my loved ones with compashion. Not hate for life, too many flowers have withered there. Why let more if we can help. This cat might be a way to help heal the world and help us think about life. And the love we should feel for all things and people.

I think all the death seen there should be a shrine for life. The cat like the people who died there, just wants to live. If it becomes a zoo, so be it. Life should be the number one rule in this world. Maybe even more the way the world seems to be going. Putting a little love at Auschwitz, can't be a bad thing.
