PM says will remove roadblocks in West Bank, release 250 prisoners

PM: The political clout we will gain is worth the increased risk; Olmert also says will cut ties with Abbas if he resumes contact with Hamas.

By Shahar Ilan

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said on Monday that Israel intends to remove roadblocks between Palestinian towns in order to grant Palestinians "increased freedom of movement."

"The political clout we will gain is worth the increased risk," Olmert said during a briefing with the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

The prime minister also said that he intends to release 250 prisoners in order to convey to the Palestinian people that "when they fight Hamas and accept the Quartet's conditions, they will receive something in exchange."

He emphasized that he was referring only to prisoners without "blood on their hands," who have not been involved in violent acts against Israelis.

Olmert noted that he had promised not to release prisoners if Hamas took part in the Palestinian Authority, but that things had changed since PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas dismissed Hamas and formed an emergency government after the Islamic group seized control of the Gaza Strip last month.

"The minute that Abu Mazen resumes contacts with Hamas, Israel will cut off contacts with him," Olmert said, referring to Abbas.

However, he said, "I don't want to delude anyone into thinking there won't be attempted attacks from Judea and Samaria," using the Biblical name for the West Bank.

"There are terrorists there. We will fight them and they will attempt to carry out terror attacks," he added.

Olmert told the committee that United States President George Bush is determined to sign a ten-year agreement with Israel, which "will substantially increase foreign aid to Israel, as we requested."

He said that the intention to increase aid reflects the understanding demonstrated by the Americans regarding the increased threat to Israel and the need for Israel to equip itself against this threat.

Olmert also promised a west bank withdrawal on sevral occassions. He was so convincing that he had his own people fooled. In reality, he evacuated two small outposts about two years ago. He made sure that it had maximum media coverage. He also quietly increased west bank settlement expansion at the same time. This expansion has been going on ever since. Using the same technique, Olmert can remove some roadblocks while actually increasing the total number of roadblocks. This is his style. His response to the Hizbollah attack which started Lebanon 2 shows us Olmerts true colors. His political stance is somewhere to the right of Netanyahu.

"So please take note of the correct terminology as written in our Bible." You may call whatever you please by its biblical names - but consider that the rest of the world is not Jewish, and even an Israeli newspaper should be understandable beyond Israel.

enough suicide bombings and Farfur videos to recognize what kind of a risk Israel is taking here. Your speech only promotes the kind of vengence that will never allow for the relief of the people. These road blocks did not just happen to oppress a people. They happened to supress violence. What is the motivation of your words? You need to check your spirit.

road blocks and restriction of palestinian movement in their own lands is the corner stone of israeli politics now. it has nothing to do with security and it has one goal-to humilate and squeeze palestinians and make their life intolerable. i dont think that history saw such system even in the most severe military dictatorship. reading about road blocks is much different when you have to pass through it when thousands of pakestinian civilians are exposed to the most bruital treatment by the hands of the so called defence soldiers sitting in their air conditioned rooms and enjoying the sceene of palestinians waiting for hours to cross through a road block and most of them chidren, elderly and women. i think israel is a criminal country, which has no interest in any kind of peace. they enjoy making palestinians suffer. this has to do with their mentality for decades acustomed to policy of killings and holocaust against the pakestinians.how can israeli people keep silent and for how lo

here to show that they can share the Holy Land in peace and strive for unity rather than "surpreme rule". Let God rule. Bloodshed is not to His Glory. He expects unity among His children. He expects them to have a common goal of blessing those around them. And He expects us to Love in the face of hate, knowing how much more powerful Love is. He is there to help, look to Him, our Creator. Remember, He is the ultimate judge of every heart. Praying God's blessings upon all the people of the land. "In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your GOOD DEEDS and praise your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:16 If the striving is for the Glory of God, you will not fail. Salaam/Shalom/Peace

things have come to the point where nobody believes Israeli announcements - 1) wait until it has actually happened. 2) Wait if it's not revoked a few days/weeks/months later.

' Yehuda ve Shomron ' are the true and correct historical names to be referred to when you write about the so called ' West Bank '. So please take note of the correct terminology as written in our Bible. It is irrelevant whether or not you agree with this- what is more important is that you get educated first before calling yourself a correspondent.

Will Olmert attend the funerals of all of us killed because of the removed roadblocks? He is taking no risks, all of his family is outside Israel.

"Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said on Monday that Israel intends to remove roadblocks between Palestinian towns in order to grant Palestinians "increased freedom of movement."" Which roadblocks? How many? When? My guess is that it will be yet another tiny mouse of a concession that will be offered to the Palestinians, a gesture will be rendered worthless in practice by the orders of the Israeli military, who appear to have the Israeli democracy by the short and curlies. Meanwhile, how much of those Palestinian tax receipts that Israel is planning to return to their rightful owners will wend their way immediately into the Swiss bank accounts of the Fatah leadership?

Fatah terrorists (not only Hamas)trying to kill Israeli civilians are killed or captured by IDF soldiers, more Israeli civilians killed or wounded, then 250 Palestinian terrorists released by the idiot, as a good will gesture. Released terrorists kill more Israelis and capture IDF troops, IDF releases still more terrorists as good will gesture or to secure release of captives, the released terrorists kill more Israelis. Moagic? No, stupidity!!!!

Road blocks removed on Monday (the press is jumping!), back on Wednesday. Prisoners released on Friday (the press is jumping!), re-kidnapped within an hour. That's how things work in the jungle.
