PM halts cabinet meeting after angry quarrel with Peretz

Cabinet was to discuss delay of salaries in local authorities; Peretz: This is not a government of one.

By Gideon Alon

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert canceled the cabinet meeting Tuesday for a few minutes after an angry quarrel broke out between him and Defense Minister Amir Peretz regarding the non-payment of salary to local authority employees.

After Olmert's opening remarks and a summary by the interior minister of local municipalities who have yet to pay workers' wages, Peretz asked for the floor. Olmert denied Peretz's request and said the subject is not part of his responsibilities.

"You have to wait patiently. Things are not done here according to your own schedule," Olmert said.

Peretz angrily responded and said, "You are behaving like the only ruler of the state." Olmert retorted, "You will not do whatever you please here, sit quietly."

Olmert then canceled the meeting for a short time.

Interior Minister Roni Bar-On said regarding Peretz, "Here, the Histadrut leader has returned."

Prior to the cancellation of the meeting, Olmert spoke of the postponement of the payment of salaries to local authority workers and reiterated that they were not state employees.

"There is no way we can accept the fact that people who worked won't find an appropriate solution to the problem of their salary," Olmert said. He maintains that this is an elementary human problem that cannot be accepted.

Olmert also said he held talks with Histadrut labor federation chair Ofer Eini, and said he supported the payment of wages, but said it would be a mistake to go on a general strike for something the government supports.

Data presented at the cabinet meeting shows that 33 local authorities and 18 religious authoritues have yet to pay 5,000 employees their salaries, with the debt standing at NIS 76 million.

than with Israel's enemies. The wrong person in the wrong job at the wrong time. But Olmert placed him there so the only person to blame is himself. Time to switch to a real Defense Minister and a real Prime Minister. Olmert's own family members are quite close to being Fifth Columnists. Kadima to the dustbin of history together with what it stands for- a new terrorist state in Judea & Samaria fronted by Iran.

Saw on yesterday's blog Kath just realized I am a woman; she says IT confirmed it--what are you guys spies? Am I gonna get whacked cause I don't agree with you all, oh well, so be it. You say your folks came with Columbus, so are your folks responsible for the treatment of the Indians, also my people, too? However, the question was your lineage for claims to over there, so how does that square up with the issue at hand? Further, you can tell Kath she need not "shudder" at how I might look cause I am a long legged, 5'6" size 8, not an ounce of fat anywhere former Ingenue/Seventeen model, first black they ever had many years ago; no coke bottle shape here, nosirree. You guys need to stop looking for spooks/Nazis in every corner; it bespeaks of paranoia. Besides, you are not all that good at identifying them as evidenced by those Nazi skinheads Haaretz said you imported!!! Now, about that lineage? IT you should be ashamed of yourselves!

How sad and desolate. This country, not so long passed, controlled by leaders and associates who knew what they were there for. Primarily, to forge a country and it's people to become valiant and strong. Not to put their own interests FIRST! Do they not realize (other countries who formerly looked upon Israel as a source of inspiration and hope--for the underdog who surrmounted what seemed the impossible)are formidably losing interest in you! WAKE UP ISRAELIS!! Don't you care about your country? Your politians and court jesters are A JOKE. ARE YOU BLIND!! Your enemies are laughing at you. While you argue, they arm. You allow the unconditinally foolish to rule you. And you state yourselves a democracy??? Huh???

You are correct 4&7, but all we can do is vote them out. But we have nothing to replace them that are worth anything. We are in a very sad state of being right now. The toilet has been flushed and we are watching the water spin down the hole. We need a leader who can lead with dignity, righteousness and justice, but until haShem reveals something we will continue down this path of destruction. Only until it get's so bad that people are begging for help will we get it. What a sad way to go but after the darkness comes the Light. May it be soon.

Of course Peretz is right to be angry that people are not being paid for their work. The pity, and shame on him,is that he hangs on to the defence ministry, for which he is not competent, instead of resigning and taking a cabinet position to which he is suited and can represent workers' interests.Unfortunately Peretz has put political interest before common sense.

I am with you, but apathy and indifference has killed Israeli society. They tolerate all that crap, and spawn new generations of it. They are used to it. They know no different.

Instead of talking about the meeting being canceled for a few minutes, it would better to say that is was "suspended" for this time. Canceling is usually final in English.

Say what you want about bias and misunderstandings and all the rest but the confluence of a whole lot of things: The end of Sharon; the "maybe" defeat of Hizb Allah; the terrible in-fighting of the Kadima gang; the behavior of the President and some ministers and ministerial candidates; the arrival of super fine Russian weaponry in the arsenals of your enemies; the Saudi usurpation of the leadership of (ha) "moderate Arabs"; the BBC poll about how much Israel is disdained; the absolute uselessness of Israel's image builders and spokespeople...both military and civilian...and the list goes on! For God's sake DO SOMETHING! As you sit in Ramat Aviv and the fish restaurants south of Tel Aviv and ruminate from ivory towers, for God's sake DO SOMETHING to break the ugly losing streak that has gone on for way too long.Your friends out here still understand your innate goodness; it's just getting harder and harder to find it under all the crap you've allowed to happen to your country.

Slavery alive and well in Israel

When a state expects a section of society to work for nothing, that is slavery. Histadrut would be negligent in it's duty if they did not call a General Strike until such time that there is an agreement which allows it's members to recieve a regular wage for services rendered. Peretz by pointing this out, is merely jostling for position before the elections. Olmert is saying he supports the idea that employees get paid for the work they do because politically, a general strike will finish him. Should get interesting.
