Peretz: Hamas is using the Gaza cease-fire to stockpile weapons
Defense Minister: Israel is following developments closely, won't rule out Gaza military operation.
By Avi Issacharoff and Amos HarelDefense Minister Amir Peretz said Tuesday that Israel is concerned about the continued strengthening and arming of Hamas and is following developments closely.
During a visit to the Israel Defense Forces Gaza Division, Peretz said Hamas is taking advantage of the cease-fire agreement between Israel and the Palestinians to continue stockpiling arms.
"We are definitely doing everything in order to preserve the cease-fire," said Peretz, but added that Israel has "no reason to turn [Hamas']strengthening into a real threat to Israel."
Peretz refused to rule out a military operation in the Gaza Strip. "Every solution that protects the citizens of Israel is possible," he said. "We prefer a diplomatic solution, but where that doesn't work out, we will also conduct military operations."
IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, who accompanied Peretz on his visit, said one of the principle Gaza threats that concerns the IDF is the digging of booby-trapped tunnels by Palestinian organizations.
A Qassam rocket hit an open area south of Ashkelon Tuesday, causing no injuries. In Nablus, the IDF continued its large-scale operation "Hot Winter," which is focusing primarily on carrying out arrests in the casbah.
Three women's bodies found in Gaza in under 12 hoursThe bodies of three woman were discovered in the Gaza Strip over the course of 12 hours on Tuesday, in what appear to be unrelated murders.
The body of 31-year-old Gaza City resident Ibtisam Abi Gaynes was discovered on the Beit Lahia beach in northern Gaza on Monday night.
Several hours later, passersby found the body of 45-year-old Samira A-Dabeiki. According to her husband, he last saw her on Monday afternoon when she went out to do some shopping.
Tuesday morning, the body of 40-year-old Amani al-Husari was found in the Sheikh Redwan neighborhood. According to her son, armed gunmen who identified themselves as police burst into their home on Monday night and abducted his mother.
Meanwhile, Palestinian security forces discovered the body of Abdul Majid Abu Suheiben, who apparently was a smuggler, in a collapsed Rafah tunnel. The tunnel collapsed Monday, and two of those inside managed to survive.

Obviously the Israeli illegal settlements take precedence over hungry Israeli children, as well.
Who knows when the next Israeli invasion will be. Also Palestinians need to hope for the best, and prepare for the worst. Preparations for the worst include stockpiling weapons, preferably anti-tank and surface to air missiles.
The problem, Dino, is that however many years of hudna they promise, they will not keep to them. The "template" is seen in an agreement their great leader (whose name, if I mention it, will keep this from being posted) made an agreement with a tribe for peace for a certain number of years--but before they were even half over, he had strengthened his army, went back, and wiped them out. This will be the fate of those who follow this same path. The road to peace will never find it's destination, because the pals will never be satisfied with anything less than everything-this is why they keep their people poor and hungry--to blame it on Israel and ensure their continuing hatred.
Obviously the pals feel that weapons take precidence over "hungry children"
Good post, Lynn, I think we all know quite well that our influence on the opinions of "the other side" is quite limited here on Talkback. But I still would say that 20 years Hudna would be much better than 20 years of war. 20 years is a long, long time. Some people (on both sides) may be willing to learn a thing or two during such a period...
What do you expect from people who only think with their feeeelings?
I read an interesting article today concerning jobs that Palestinians have at local greenhouses which raise food. It seems the Hamas Gov. went in and fired 1,000 workers who were earning a living to feed their families. The fired workers are being replaced with only those loyal to the Hamas Gov. the fired workers have done absolutely nothing wrong. How is that right? The Gov. is doing their own people in and showing absolute favoritism to political backers. How would you feel if that happened to you?
I don't think you actually have that much influence on anyone on talkback. Not being rude, but it's just the way it is here. Food for thought is the best one can do. I also don't believe that a 15-20 year hudna is what the Quartet or Israel is looking for either.
The Palestinians are seeking to unite their ranks to confront verious challenges, one of which is to convince the Quartet that the only way forward is to negotiate with Palestinian democracy and not shun it hypocritically. Meanwhile, Palestinians must prepare for all possibilities, including further Israeli crimes like land grabs, latest settlement announcement in Arab East Jerusalem, daily killings and popular terror. Did you expect them to just sit back? Hamas, if Israeli provocations and US hypocrisy continues, will seek to inflict as much damage as possible on Israeli occupation soldiers and settlers. How did America achieve its independence? What about the Algerians? Mexicans? Independence and dignity do not come on a silver platter. Rest assured the Palestinians are prepared for more sacrifices.
The point is that everyone knows about it and they freely admit they are doimg it. The Israels know it, the Palestinians admit it, the West is aware of it, the Iranians and Syrians encourage it, and Bin-Laden butt-kissers like you know it, so the question is why doesn't Peretz know it? He is as dense as you are; your Twin Towers went down and the rest of NYC could go down and your kind would still sit in the rubble covered in ashes and dust and you would still support your muslim heros, even as they walk up to you and cut your throat.
Unlike Amir Peretz,Horatio Nelson put his telescope to his blind eye so as not to be discouraged from attacking the enemy. What would Nelson's advice to Peretz be? ENGAGE THE ENEMY MORE CLOSELY.
Mr Peretz seems to enjoying the marching exercise.
I genuinely feel sorry for Gaza children who are hungry but are fed hate and bullets by their racist Arab Muslim bigoted parents of Hamas, Fatah, Islamic Jihad or any other Islaminazi terror group.
ALL THE BLAME FOR THE PALESTINIANS IN GAZA NOT HAVING ENOUGH FOOD TO EAT. THE CULPRITS SYRIA AND IRAN.
Peretz is Israel's Village Idiot, afflicted with Oslo Psychosis and still following the Roadmap to War. How about taking back the Philadelphi Corridor and shutting off the arms flow, or is that too much for Peretz' couscous brain to figure out?
Were the French entitled to smuggle weapons to oppose the occupation and if the answer is yes than the same would apply to the Palestinians. You do not have asked the Germans, or the Israelis, but the people themselves and the nations who were supporting them, like, the British., the United States. You cannot, if you are honest, change the goalposts.
exist can not wait to justify Hamas, despite the fact that its weapon piling activity is contrary to agreements signed by the Palestinians with Israel, both as part to the Oslo Accords and the Road Map to Peace.
Hamas stockpiling weapons is actually in line with the Geneva Conventions, that an occupied people have the right to resist a foreign occupying force. But then again what does Israel know about international standards.
IT HELPS DINO TO KNOW HISTORY !!! HAMAS IS NO CHANGE ON THE PART OF ARABS
So according to your logic, if one commits a crime(smugling weapons) and then takes his own children as hostages, the just thing to do for the world is to cave in ? Well by the same logic a , say jewish terrorist organization, can wipe out an arab population, then say they will murder their own children if anyone trys to punish them, and you Omran will say, yes they are right let's cave in ?
If the Minister of Defence is correctly reported as having said that there is " no reason to turn Hamas' strengthening into a real threat to Israel " then I cry for the country which is so bereft of leadership.
That is exactly right, Zelkha. The Gaza "ghetto" is self imposed. The true terrorism and the continual path of self-destruction and hatred are commonly initiated from inside this realm of self-loathing.
but food is not forbidden.
What would Israel have done without him?
REALIZE THUS. WHAT WOULD THE STATE OF ISRAEL HAVE DONE WITHOUT HIM?
....what do you really expect them to do, as long as your governement is refusing to hold any negotiations...?? By the way, this is probably now the unity governement which is stockpiling weapons, not Hamas. I would strongly recommend them to use the money for better means, but as long as your governe- ment is neither willing to negotiate nor to make any bold offer for peace, my words probably won't have too much of an effect on the Pale- stinians....
is that the the Gaza "ghetto" is self imposed.
Hamas is taking advantage of a cease fire to stock weapons.! ? Gosh. Who would have thought it.
the agreements that in Mecca they agreed in writing to "honor". Not only doesn't Hamas accept and ready to implement signed agreements of the Palestinian Arab leadership, and not only does it refuse to recognize Israel's right to exist, and to cease all acts of terror, violence and the preparation for such acts, it actually prepares for more terror and deadlier acts of mass slaughter. And they want to be accepted by the international community as a legitimate organization and government of an autonomous terrirory??!!
Think, with all of the money going into nuclear development, Iran could build refineries, oil infastructure, followed by the best schools in the world, followed by the best hospitals in the world, best desalinization, and so on.... Iran's leaders could, through peace, and their resources, show the world what Islam is all about. While feeding their children knowledge as well as food. I wish they loved their children too.
So in one Haaretz article it says Hamas is using the cease fire to stockpile weapons, and the other article says Russian FM: Hamas vows to end attacks on Israel. What is this a oxymoron. Hamas tell us which one is the real headline? If they want truce then they have no need for arms.
The Palestinians will never stop fighting Israel, nor will the rest of the Arab worlds. They just are looking at the pals and Hezbollah do the fight for now. The Arabs at large will jump into the fight against Israel at their right time. I am not trying to sound pessimistic, but just realistic. You do not have to be a rocket scientist in order to realize Israel is sitting on a peace of land far too small to be defended against his present day neighbors; they have a much larger population than in 1948/1954/1967, better armed and more lethal weapons too. The Arabs know that it just will be a matter of time to be successful against Israel, that?s the # one reason as to why they are not interested in ?real? peace and as well the rationale behind Hamas lack of interest to recognize the State of Israel and only offer a ?truce? for 15 years. Bottom line, Israel the fight must continue!
"unless you consider a prison a place where weapons are encouraged to come in but food is not." Riiight. But usually, David, the prison guards are required to feed their prisoners, even while they are being given the job of preventing weapons from being smuggled in. You make Gaza sound like it is worse than a prison - it is a place where weapons have to be smuggled in AND the basic necessities of life - like food - are not being provided by the guards on the perimeter. Why... why... why... you are describing a GHETTO, David. Is that what you mean? That Israel has deliberately turned Gaza into a miserable, squallid ghetto? An honest zionist! How refreshingly different.
Israel included, so who cares. Do you expect everyone to disarm while you churn out plutonium spheres in Dimona? I doubt that very much. Get a grip.
"We are definitely doing everything in order to preserve the cease-fire," said Peretz AS IF THE IDF HAD NOT IMPOSED A TWO-DAY SEIGE ON NABLUS, KILLED AN INNOCENT UNARMED MAN AND INJURED COUNTLESS CITIZENS !! WHAT CEASEFIRE IS ISRAEL HONORING?
According to some, for every bullet smuggled into to Gaza, 1000 children are to starve to death.
is it about self and mutual respect. So each one should do so. the Israeli has the army to destroy evrything. the Pal are standing in a crazy way. why don't you booth let it go, because i think and personally getting sik of this old story. is there or can you get us a new one. But just accept to reject the other nicely, or just refuse that the rest of the world agree to see you do so. Good luck
Peretz will do nothing to protect the Jews. He and Olmert have betrayed the Jews.
It is truely sad to see a people that care more about fighing and attacking their enemy than they do about feeding their people. So much for Gaza being a prison. unless you consider a prison a place where weapons are encouraged to come in but food is not.
This is news? Is there anyone in Israel that didn't know that Hamas was going to stockplile weapons during the make-believe cease fire. Peretz sounds as if he is shocked at the news, if so, he is the only one.
