Peres urges lawmakers: Don't let peace with Palestinians slip by

At opening of Knesset winter session, Peres says 'peace of necessity is better than no peace at all.'

President Shimon Peres on Monday urged lawmakers at the opening of the Knesset's winter session to ensure that negotiations with the Palestinians continued and progressed this year.

"As I see it, the States of Israel cannot fully be built as long as the peace process is unfulfilled," Peres said. "I am aware of those who say we have no Palestinian partner, and it's true, from a sentimental standpoint, there is no partner for peace."

"The peace that we have and the peace that is to come will not be romantic," the president added. "It won't come from love. It will come from necessity."

Pointing to the decades-long peace agreements Israel has held with Jordan and Egypt, Peres said: "I know that neither the peace with Egypt nor the peace with Jordan is a peace of love. Sometimes they even incite against us."

"So this is not how we dreamed of peace?" Peres continued. "But this is what there is. Still, thirty years of peace with Egypt and at least 15 years with Jordan, and there have not been any wars between us."

"Do not let these negotiations slip through your fingers," the president warned ministers and lawmakers. "Search for every crack, do everything in your power to put an end to more than a century of strife and bloodshed. I am sure that the nation will be stand behind you."

"There are wars of necessity and there is peace of necessity," concluded the president. "In my eyes, even a peace of necessity is preferable to this."

Right-wing MK Michael Ben Ari cut the president off in the middle of his address and shouted: "Is this a political speech? You are the president of the state. That is a political subject." His heckling was made in reference to Peres' largely ceremonial role in government.

I do not particulary like the term "Islamic threat". It sounds too much like "Jewish threat". You should not group people like that. For most people religion is just one aspect of their life. Using terms like "Jewish threat" did in the end lead to millions of dead people. Someday people might take you seriously, that day I do not want to see.

The slip you talk about Israel missing may be more of a critical factor on the Israeli side today with the world out of patience and time with Israel's assault on the Palestinian people and their homeland. There is just so much good people will take from the upstart state of Israel and aggression against a civilian population and their children is one of the biggest NO, NO of all time for any group of people. It's where the world collectively draws the line. Dutch

The word "peace" in connection with Israel and her neighbours,is an abused, overvalued, irrelevant, non excistant, dead and buried word. TALKING again and again about "peace" won't bring peace. Everybody repetes the same questions and the same answers over and over again. It's called "deadlock". When nothing works, a "time out" might be a good solution.

As long as so called Palestinians are claimed to exist there will be war with Israel. Palestine is a code word for destroying Israel and as long as this threat to Israel's sovereignty exist there can be no peace. Peres should return his Nobel Prize for peace.

As far as I know you have to talk with your opponents when you want peace not with your friends. So talk to Syria, Lebanon, Hamas and Fatah. Not because you like them or because they are gooed people but because you need them to make peace. I fear the Israeli government including Shimon Peres defines partner in peace as someone doing what he/she is told and satisfied with the current situation. That is not a partner for peace.

The UN High Commissioner for the UNHRC ADMITTED in her preface to the report that the testimonies of civilian residents of the Negev were censored out, so as not to detract from the true intent of the 'report' a report that was predetermined in its conclusion. I realize it is asking too much, but reading Pillay's description of the 'report' and what it was officially named says it all! Try reading BBSNews, or have someone of a grown up age read it to you.

Peres, Rabin and Arafatt shared the prize in '94 or'95. Peace collasped and Bibi became P.M. In the subsequent years, Peres did little or nothing as a "continual voice and advocate for peace between Jews and Pals." What a hypocrite, he takes the money and the harware(winners get a plaque) and never felt it in his heart to be a statesman. Are there any STATESMEN in Israel?

Mr. Peres seems to ignore the Mastodon in the living room. Os should I say the Living Room Mastodon. The 'lawmakers' vote the way their leaders tell them. The Settlers do as they please. The leaders, Netanyahu, Barak, Lieberman, all are determined to prevent any peace agreement and continue to expand settlements. Thus the well-intentioned Mr. Peres is mouthing words he must know are hollow. "So this is not how we dreamed of peace? But this is what there is. Still, thirty years of peace with Egypt and at least 15 years with Jordan, and there have not been any wars between us." - Shimon Peres Netanyahu and Barak are hard at work to fix that problem. Eventually, with enough provocations, insults and humiliation they will drive off Egypt and Jordan as they have Turkey. They will continue to do everything they can to end the threat of peace.

...simply hurts Israel. Why do you want to hurt Israel? Richard Goldstone has impeccable credentials, his voice carries great weight in the world and Israeli hasbara, not so much... Lying about the Goldstone mission's findings just makes you look short-sighted and frankly, stupid. Anyone can read it for themselves and discover that the report does indeed hold Hamas responsible for war crimes and possible crimes against humanity. The problem is for Israel, the "most moral army in the world" committed war crimes and possible crimes against humanity as well. Time's up for Israel's continued belligerence and intransigence.

The majority of the Palestinian Arab population support the destruction of Israel. Poll after poll shows widespread collective support among the majority of the Palestinian Arab population for the destruction of Israel. In a poll released July 2006[1] the majority of Palestinian Arabs responded - 77.2% expressed support for the abduction of the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit and - 60.4% supported the continuation of indiscriminate firing of deadly Qassam rockets into Israeli towns. Ironically, Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention that deals with prohibition of imposing collective punishment on civilian population under occupation, should have been applied by the Goldstone Mission to protect over 1,000,000 innocent men, women, and children in the Israeli towns of Sderot, Ashkelon, and hundreds of smaller communities that are collectively punished day-in and day-out for offences they never personally committed. The Goldstone report ignores this : http://xrl.us/bfq3q7

? You don't even have own history and your "demography" is only booming thanks to Israel. Most of you would have been dead if not for the 67 War ,which transformed a corner of the Arab World with the highest children mortality to one where the average pal lives 10 years longer than average Egyptians and Syrians. If Israel cuts ties with you ---well you'd become more wretched than Egyptians and Syrians. I wish Israel cut all ties to you ,no more free medical help in Israel.

Where were you Mr. President when you had the power to make peace on many different occasions? You zigged when you should have zagged and took the easy road and avoided the hard and difficult roads that are traveled by bold leaders of this world. These days, you lay awake in bed thinking of the numerous opportunities you squandered and wish that you could relive your life again. No one is born great, it is what people do that makes them great. A generation from now, no one will remember your name. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I'm reading the one-liners on Haaretz's first page as Yahoo is saying his speech at the Kenesset. What a bunch of bs! He's better off to stop lying. He's the aggressor, the murderer, the occupier, the thief, the oppressor, the settler, the criminal. Palestinians have all the time in the world. Israel will end if it does not withdraw from Palestine and make peace. Making peace is easy: - Tell the world and the Palestinians that you made a strategic decision to withdraw from Palestine in six months - State clearly what the border of israel is - Invite the Palestinians for round-the-clock discussions to plan the next six months Demographics is on our side.

Bibi and certainly the moldovan may find themselves restricted as to where they can amble.
