President Shimon Peres has revealed the secret to a long life: fresh fruits and vegetables, at least three times daily.

During a meeting with representatives of Israel's Fruit Growers' Association on Monday, Peres got the latest news from the world of agriculture and told his hosts that he personally made sure to eat fruit salad three times a day.

After getting a taste of Israel's newest produce - including blue and red bananas, apple-flavored bananas - Peres got to see the latest strains of tropical fruit now being grown here, such as jackfruit, black bananas, Japanese raisin and Indian plums.

"Israel's hi-tech agriculture is a source of pride for the state and known around the world," Peres told the growers. "This is the first agriculture in the world that does not rely solely on God, on the soil or on water - here, we have hi-tech agriculture."

"This is the first agriculture in the world that does not rely solely on God, on the soil or on water - here, we have hi-tech agriculture." It's only when you go abroad that you suddenly realize what a apple really tastes like, the aroma of flowers in an English garden. Milk that you can practically stand a spoon in, not the tasteless white water Tnuva stuff. Come off it Peres. Blue and Red bananas. Specific foods belong to specific areas of the planet. Temperature, geographical location all play a part in why the French produce the best grapes, and real bananas come from the West Indies. If you want the real stuff, with its real taste you have to impost it. The practice of protecting Israel agriculture by not allowing imports, means we the Israeli consumer have to buy what's on offer, and have no choice. Hardly democratic.
