Peres calls for 'total' world isolation of Ahmadinejad

Peres to Biden: Israel trusts Obama on Iran, but nobody really knows what they are planning.

By Amos Harel Haaretz Service Tags: Iran Barack Obama Shimon Peres Israel news

President Shimon Peres on Tuesday said Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad must face "total" international isolation, adding that his anti-Israel rhetoric was only a cover for his ambitions for Iranian hegemony in the Middle East.

"A person like Ahmadinejad, who calls openly to destroy the state of Israel, cannot be a full member of the United Nations," Peres said, as he met visiting U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden in Jerusalem.

"A man who calls for acts of terror, and who hangs people in the street ... he should be placed in his proper definition. He cannot go around almost like a cultural hero," Peres said.

"Ahmadinejad has to be isolated and not be welcomed in the capitals of the world," Peres said.

Peres urged Washington to "surround Iran with an envelope" to protect Israel against Tehran's "missiles and nuclear threat".

"We have trust in President [Barack] Obama," Peres told visiting U.S. Vice President Joe Biden. But when it comes to Iran's contentious nuclear program, said Peres, "Nobody knows exactly what they are doing."

Later Tuesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that one of Israel's top security priorities was ensuring Iran did not build nuclear weapons, telling visiting U.S. Vice President Joe Biden that he appreciated the Obama administration's efforts to that effect.

"I very much appreciate the efforts of President Obama and the American government to lead the international community to place tough sanctions on Iran," he said during a press conference following his meeting with Biden.

"The stronger those sanctions are, the more likely it will be that the Iranian regime will have to chose between advancing its nuclear program and advancing the future of its own permanence," he added.

Israeli political sources expect Biden to make clear during his visit, as other U.S. officials have done, that Obama wants no strike on Iran - notably by Israel - while Washington seeks to curb Tehran's nuclear program by means of sanctions.

"Since our administration came to power, I would point out that Iran is more isolated - internally, externally - has fewer friends in the world," Biden said.

Biden's main task during his visit is to assuage the Israeli leadership and ensure that it is not planning any preemptive strike against Iran's nuclear sites which would disrupt the Obama administration's efforts to form a broad international front that would impose tough sanctions on Tehran.

Senior defense sources told Haaretz this week that American concerns about an Israeli strike, along with the obvious coolness in relations between U.S. President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have resulted in the substantial tightening of relations between the two countries' defense establishments.

The same sources said the Americans are trying to convince the Israeli defense leadership that the administration is committed to the efforts to bring about sanctionsagainst Iran. Consequently, coordination between the two sides is deepening.

To #14. Look up the definition of anti-Semite. You will find that this group includes and is comprised mainly of Arabs. The Jews are not the only Semites so you and others who throw this term around freely are being disingenuous. As far as the Jews being the high priests that elevate men. ROTFLMAO. You say also that it is the Islamists that kill innocents. Yes, there are extremists of all faiths. Even Judism. What do you think the Zionists have been doing for the past 60 years to the Palestinian people? Wake up dude. As far as Israel saving the planet. It is more likely the planet will be destroyed because of them. I am not alone in this line of thinking. The world is growing tired of the Israeli government. Time has come and gone for tough sanctions to be imposed and all aid cut off. Zip, zero, nada, zilch. No more money, no more military aid. Period.

You might want to support your position by sharing with us some of the "bizarre questions" that comprised the recent Gallup Poll. I do think that most Americans suspect that Israel has had nuclear weapons for some time and understand that they were developed to deter its neighbors who, from the beginning of its statehood, have continuously threatened to and tried to destroy it.

Besides Congress and wacko Christian Zionists, Israel has very little support in the US. Gallup polls asks bizarre questions to give the illusion of US support by the people. The media blocks out negative stories, especially ones letting the US populace know that Israel is the only country in the Middle East with nukes. Americans also supported the Iraqi war because of lies. Same for Israel's wars. When the truth comes out, support will plummet.

Mr. Peres ought to know one thing if he is wishing for the world to move towards isolating Iran... or Syria... or Hezbollah... That thing is: He should stay shut! Who would want to show signs of bowing down to his Pariah State's demands?

US has accepted its inevitable absence of future in the ME. Russia and China have upped their business with Iran. Europeans are simply going through the motions of listening to Israel. Peres is old enough to know when the tides change. He repeated anti-Ahmedinejad diatribe is not helpful - even he knows Ahmedinejad does not make the real decisions for Iran. He just delivers the news.

New York Times gave a list of American companies still doing business indirectly with Iran. It was a great piece of work. Many of the American companies have headquarters in Texas. I wish the news outlets would place some TV cameras in front of their office. I think they should answer some questions.

but smart people know that it is Iran/Syria/Hamas/Hizbollah that will be facing isolation as they set up more cells around the world, destabilize moderated, hang gays, mutilate and destroy women, abuse and marry off little children, prohib freedom of press, speech and diversity and threaten the whole world with nuclear obliteration for their mahdi's return.Israel will save this planet. The Jews are the high priests that go out among men to elevate them. there is no difference between an anti semite and anti Israel but you would know that you see its reflection in the mirror every day. you should put your energy to pointing your finger at political extemists that kill innocents like the Islamists.

thanks to the continued expansion of settlement activity, misadventures such as Lebanon and Gaza, repression and collective punishment in the occupied territories, targeted assassination, and general double-talk from government spokespeople, the world does not stand with Israel and probably will not in the foreseeable future. You have taken a wealth of goodwill and thrown it away over the past 40-odd years. Once again our collective hubris is resulting in tragedy.

It was Shimon Peres who brought nuclear to this region. This was more than Israeli hotspah, this was arrogances. Did he and his cronies really expect that others in this region would not aspire to also go nuclear. Or did they think that only Israel was clever enough to make Atom Bombs. Well now we know different. As the Bible says "As you sow, so shall ye reap".

I don't understand some commenters, specifically n and Felix can take themselves seriously. The point of the article is to reinforce how dangerous it is for a man that calls for the destruction of a nation and deny's one of the most documented events in history existed. A man veheminently denies a factual event took place and calls for the destruction of a nation including its civilians. Enough said. You cannot trust someone like that. Stop crying about double standards and realize that a crazy man is about to get a hold of a nuclear weapon.

There is an eerie feeling about this visit from the US Vice-President to the Jewish State. Is corrupt and self-serving Joe Biden being briefed by the Mossad on how to act surprised when they snuff that other existential threst to Israel - the President of the United States? Is Jow Biden the new LBJ? With "allies" like Israel, one's back is always vulnerable. Yeah, I know, the ends justify the means. Oy!

    "world isolation"
    • Ol' Case
    • 09.03.10
    • 14:34

Nice try, n. Your simplistic attribution of American support to the "Jewish Lobby" is way off base. Have you checked the recent US Gallup Poll? It shows very substantial support for Israel throughout the US populace. Don't be misled by the vocal Israel haters and publicity-seeking left wingers who get attention out of proportion to their numbers. The last refuge of many of you is to ascribe US identification with and support of Israel to "evil" AIPAC which somehow buys governmental support against the interest of the United States. Do you honestly think that Israel's opponents, which have much more money (e.g. oil), would not hesitate to "buy" the US Congress if it could?

I agree with Mr Peres, in practical terms and at best, the isolation will be carried out by Israel and the USA. Europe may adhere to it as they are still under US hegemony since WW2. All others will not. So, Mr Perez. Is this the World in your view? About 80% of the World will not isolate Iran, rather they will do that when it comes to Israel, the country that occupies, terrorizes, and practices real apartheid and discrimination against the Palestinian people since it was forcefully established on Palestinian land.

Israel could face the same demand because Israel is permantly ignoring UNO resolutions, is breaking international laws and human rights. Israel should be aware that it is the next candidate for world isolation. At the moment only the Jewish lobby in US is preventing it but this support will fail in long term.
