Palestinians, U.S. Jews spar over 'Judaizing' Jerusalem

As clashes flare in Shoafat, Ramallah, Temple Mount, PA vows to 'confront' Israel's plans in Jerusalem.

By Natasha Mozgovaya Tags: Benjamin Netanyahu Jerusalem Mahmoud Abbas Israel news

The Western-backed Palestinian Authority on Monday urged the world to "force [Israel] to put off its attempts to take over Jerusalem and Judaize it," prompting Orthodox Jews in the United States to vow never to give up their historical right to the ancient city.

The Palestinian cabinet, issuing a strong statement after a meeting in the West Bank town of Ramallah, condemned what it called a plan by Jews to "perform religious rituals" in the Temple Mount compound which contains the al-Aqsa mosque, Islam's third holiest site.

It also pledged "to confront Israel," as Israeli security forces clashed with Arab protesters for a second day in the Jerusalem area.

In response, the leading body of Orthodox Jews in America condemned the Palestinian Authority and the violence exhibited by Palestinian protesters.

"The Palestinians, determined to deny Jewish history and our connection to our eternal capital of Jerusalem, plotted violence as evidenced by stores of rocks and other materials discovered by the Israeli police," Nathan Diament, director of public policy forthe Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, said in a statement.

"Jerusalem has been at the center of Jewish life and faith for thousands of years. Just days ago, at the close of Yom Kippur, Jews around theworld declared, as we have for thousands of years, the hope and prayer 'Next Year in Jerusalem.'"

"A majority of Jews, in the U.S. and Israel, continue to oppose relinquishing Jewish sovereignty over our eternal capital," he added.

"The enemies of our people recognize this, and seek to deny our history. In the face of all this we reaffirm that 'for the sake of Zion we will not be silent' and we will not allow history to be denied."

Palestinians have warned that the tensions flaring over access to the holy compound housing the al-Aqsa mosque, an area also revered by Jews as the site of an ancient temple, could, on the background of stalled peace talks, ignite a third uprising.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has conditionally agreed to a Palestinian state alongside Israel, but peace talks have remained stalled for months despite U.S. efforts to revive them, over Israel's refusal to halt settlement construction.

Violence in Jerusalem flared on Sunday after Israel briefly shut gates leading to the compound around al-Aqsa, known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as the Temple Mount, citing concerns for possible violence as hundreds of Jews held holiday prayers at the adjacent Western Wall.

The gates were partly reopened once calm was restored after stone-throwing protests by Palestinians in anger at being kept from reaching the holy site. There was no violence in the area on Monday when thousands of Jews worshipped at the Western Wall.

Do not confuse your animus toward Muslims and your need to disparage their connexion with the city with historic fact. You are simply wrong. Jerusalem is holy to Muslims as well as to Jews. You will argue degrees. The title in Islamic literature for the Holy City is: Ursalim, Al Quds, or translated, Jerusalem, the Holy. That is from the Hebrew but it does not mean that the city belongs exclusively to the Jews and you can do with others who love, as you wish in your vision.

What it DOES NOT mean is that Jerusalem is not connected deeply with Jewish history, religioon and sentiment. It does not mean that people are claiming Jews have no right to live, work and worship in Jerusalem It does not mean that Jews can, as individuals, live where they chose in Jerusalem, just as that right should be allowed non-Jews to live where they chose. It DOES mean the concerted effort of one group, in this case, Jews, to usurp the rights of others and claim the city belongs exclusively to them in a way it does not to others. It does mean a mind set which says what is mine is mine and what is yours is mine and we will take it. It means a coveteousnous that desires to lay whole to everything in Jerusalem and deny the history and sentiment others have for Jerusalem. That is what Erekat is referring to and he is right.

This whole thing is completely absurd and incomprehensible! This is Jewish Land, period: history proves it, archeology proves it, carbon testing proves it: there were NO palestinians around 2,800 years ago but plenty of Jews. The muslims have Mecca and Medina...doesn't that suffice? No, they need to take the Jews holiest site and desecrate it and physically attack the Jews when they visit. I say, kick all of the palestinians out of Jerusalem...completely. Give them the boot, take back the Temple Mount, take down that eye-sore of a mosque and finally make a stand. This is a national decision that has nothing to do with the international community: its none of their business. Drive the palestinians out of ALL of Jerusalem and let them continue squatting in Gaza and parts of the West Bank. Enough is Enough. We all know thats what its going to come to anyhow. Why wait?

Since Muslims believe Prophet David (pbuh) and the Jews who accepted him at the time are their fellow Muslims; the Muslim conquest of Jerusalem in the 7th century was actually a liberation of the holy city from the Roman usurpers to restore Muslim rule. Afterwards, the Jews have broken their covenant with God in many ways, therefore, they are not considered Muslims anymore, hence their occupation of Jerusalem nowadays is considered another usurpation of Muslim rule that needs to be restored again. These are the true Muslim beliefs. History ought to teach some to adapt to this fact or face the consequences.

So, "fanatic" Jews are those who want to be "near the Mosque compound" and open-minded and free-thinking "palestinian doves" those who want to throw stones and kill them. Very interesting definitions... Very much in line with the democratic spirit of Islam and peace loving behavior of Arabs... Would be interesting to know the source of your "eye-opening" discovery that "Jews never bothered with the area". May be you also remind us why "Jews never prayed near the site and only started demanding access after the arrival of the British in 1918"? Or maybe they were not allowed to do so by "fair-minded" and "just" Moslem authorities under the penalty of death? And, of course, the whole pre-Islamic history of Jerusalem (oh, sorry, al-Quds) is just a fiction and "Zionist narrative", including Roman Emperors who all were just Zionist agents and Islam-bashers. Thank you "palestinian" who adapted Roman designation of identity and stole the Jewish history and inheritance.

    • 06.10.09
    • 05:47

The world should recognize the writing on the wall. The days of the Palestinian and Israeli Arabs are numbered. They have been judged and found wanting. Or do they not have a mina, sheckel or half-mina? Does it matter if they are not rich or are simply beyond hope? The Arab population of Israel, and especially Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem has no future. They should accept that they will be refugees, exiles, and the world should act to help them in leaving their homes and moving to where they will not be persecuted. The last hope of the Palestinian nation was Obama, and he has been weighed upon history's scales and found to be wanting. Netanyahu has won, there will be no Palestinian state and no need to argue over the 'Judaizing' of Jerusalem. It will be racially purified and Arabs will no longer be a problem, in Israel or Jerusalem. This is the cost of peace.

The religious Jews in the Diaspora confuse the old city with Arab Jerusalem. I wish someone in Israel would explicitly talk about the one, or both, with some accuracy. Otherwise, the wild ones here will continue to freak out. And Israel will be stuck with incorporating another 300,000 Palestinians. And all the while, these religious people will try to convince us that there is no demographic threat to a Jewish majority. This kind of loose talk and fuzzy thinking makes big trouble.

The Imams are agitating, and the PA is encouraging these riots which desecrate the holiness of the site. If I had my way I would remove their lifeforce from them and they would die painful deaths. At least they should be beaten and clobbered with pipes till dead. My heart is heavy and I am upset because the Jewish people are too lame to stand up for righteousness. In our own land these haters are trying to steal from us and kill us. There must be action against this... If only all the Jews could stand together and remove the stain called Islam from the holy city of Jerusalem. They are fighting hard against us and we are too weak to even respond. What about Mecca or Vatican City? Both are claimed to be holy land. Not to mention land in India, Iran, and Utah. All sites of revered temples so holy land. The obvious distinction which you fail to make is that this is JEWISH holy land so you feel some right to act compromisingly in your willingness to pass it off to such an impartial judge as the UN, I presume.

We're the ones who got the original borders through the UN. Israel has done nothing but shoot rock throwers with tanks that the U.S. provided. I think the US should evict the Israelis and turn Jerusalem into another Las Vegas. At least then it would serve some purpose.

Funny I don't think Jerusalem is mentioned in the koran and if so maybe only in passing. Jews have been praying towards Jerusalem forever and that is quite a long time. Throughout the ages it has always been "Next year in Jerusalem"...it is our holy city..the city of David. Jesus prayed in Jerusalem at the Holy Temple...the archaeological digs prove Jewish presence in the area for thousands of years. Your insulting rant falls on deaf ears because you are the propagandist...mohammed flew off the rock in the seventh century....Jesus prayed in Jerusalem seven hundred years before. Paris might be French...but one fact is a certainty Jerusalem's ties to the Jews is indestructible.. you can have mecca and medina and your bigotry but Jerusalem is Jewish and is the capitol of Israel whether you like it or not. You can bring the subject up to G-d if you need clarification, that is if you ever reach heaven.

    Jerusalem is an interntional city
    • Abe
    • 06.10.09
    • 00:56

The UN resolution 194 that outlined the partition of Palestine, set out that Jerusalem was to be a 'corpus separatum', an international city that should be administered by an international body, as being sacred to all three religions. The wars of 1948 and 1967 saw the Israeli government taking over whole swathes of what were Arab areas - Katamon, Mamilla, Bak'aa, and then the whole of East Jerusalem, which is considered illegally annexed under international law.. The Knesset is built on appropriated Palestinian land, as are most of the settlements of East Jerusalem. Even the Jewish Quarter was one-fifth of the present size. Now even solid Palestinian areas like Silwan, Sheikh Jarrah, Ras El Amud are being 'judaized' by extreme religious settlers - denying what should be part of a Palestinian state. Even areas like E1 and Maaleh Adumim are built on Palestinian owned land. That is the real truth - so for a peace with justice, Israel must withdraw its settlers from all the above.

"The Palestinians, determined to deny Jewish history and our connection to our eternal capital of Jerusalem....", says Nathan Diament with the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America. Two points: 1)I question Mr. Diament's personal "connection" to the eternal city, both from a racial and religious standpoint. Racially, he is surely Ashkenazik, not Hebrew. Religiously, he is surely a Talmudite, not an Israelite. 2) Most members of the Palestinian Arab population, in all likelihood, have a greater "connection" to the Holy Land both religiously and racially than does Mr Diament. If push ever came to shove, and Mr. Diament, along with his "Orthodox" correligionists, were finally outed and forced to reveal his family tree and his own alleged "Jewish history," he'd drop that "our connection" baloney pretty quickly, I imagine.

    1) Temple Mount is the most sacred site in the world for jews it is the site of the 2 Temples. For muslims its a relatively new idea it being a holy place to them & not mentioned in the Koran 2) Until 1948 jews were the majority in all Jerusalem & th eeast was occupied by jews. Arabs came after the jews were expelled by Jordan & the city divided 3) Up until 1967 jews were barred from Temple Mount by the muslim occupiers. Until 1967 they were even barred from praying at the Western Wall. Under the Turks jews were allowed to gather in small numbers but they were not allowed to even bring benches to sit on as they prayed or blow the shofar When the British took over they were a little more liberal but they were not allowed to blow the shofar on holy days. Once the jews put up a curtain to seperate men & women it caused an uprising when the British police saw it & demanded its removal & the jews refused 1948-1967 Jordan ddn' let jews visit the wall but arabs urinate agaist it legally.

When Arabs start talking about there being too many Jews in Jerusalem or similar talk, it's time to do the opposite. De-Arabize the Jewish State of Israel. All the Arabs want is for Jews to be underlings to them as in previous history. So, the only thing to do is fight the Arab disease by removing them from the Jewish state. Raise the flag of Israel on the Temple Mount. Continue to strengthen the Jewish state as that is the only thing the world respects.

If true, the Jews probably stayed away from the Temple Mount for centuries out of fear of decapitation! The Jews have been disproportionately kind to the Muslims since taking control of Jerusalem. They could have restricted access to the Mosque the way the Arabs restricted access the Western Wall to Jews. And if you think the Jewish historical link to Jerusalem is a fraud, read Roman History. There you'll find quite convincing accounts of the Jewish-Roman wars. Also look up the Arch of Titus.

    • 23:28

I'm wondering if Nathan Diament, director of public policy for the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America is correct when he speaks for both Israelis and U.S. Jews? First of all, we already have Jerusalem back now as our capital of the Jewish state. So the statement, "Next Year in Jerusalem" has been fulfilled long ago as it is. A poll published Oct.4, 2009 indicated 53% Israelis and 56% Palestinians support the Geneva Initiative agreement with each side governing its holy sites. Also from the Truman Institute at Hebrew University, 69% of U.S. Jews polled in March 2009 affirmed that Israel should negotiate with a joint Fatah-Hamas government. And in this study, 76% support a two-state, final status deal based on lines of Camp David 2000. Holy sites in Jerusalem should be respected by everyone and no reason for hostilities to persist.

I wish the Palestinians had leaders for the benefit of their civilians and start building a succesful society. Yes, the dare. Iran dares too. The Arab world dares to spew anti-Semitic things that would raise your hair. But it doesn't end there. Sweden (with the notable exception of its ambassador to Israel) doesn't withdraw their suppoer for Aftonbaldet's defamation that IDF soldiers "plunder" Palestinian organs. Norway makes an academic Israel-bashing fest in one of its universities. The president of Honduras talks about Israeli mercenaries torturing him. And it goes on, and on, and on, like in the 1930's but world-wide. I have no idea if we can make peace with Arabs, but I do know that the current anti-Semitism is fatter than everything we could even imagine just a few years ago.

Campaign against "Judaizing Jerusalem"? Not Judaizing Al-Quds?
    • Dr. L. Brnd
    • 05.10.09
    • 22:49

The fact that they use the Jewish word for the city - Yerushalayim - rather than the Muslim and Arabic "Al-Quds", says it all. Kind of like saying "Arab East Al-Quds" when they claim ownership of the city. Everybody knows Jerusalem is a Jewish/Hebrew word, and the Arabs are late-comers and usurpers. This kind of idiocy will gain no traction in the U.S., and a campaign against "Judaizing Jerusalem" is 100% certain to be blocked by our anti-hate crime laws. Jerusalem is a Jewish city, and the Muslims have got to rid themselves of the notion that every place where Mohammed stopped to blow his nose becomes a Moslem holy place, to the total exclusion of other religions that were there first. You see this kind of crap in the conversion of churches to mosques in the Arab world, building mosques on top of Hindu temple sites in India, etc. These "claims" first for "sharing", then for total control, are how they expand and dominate other religions whereever they encounter them. This must end.

Anti-Semitism no longer has the same meaning as when used in WW11. Zionists have now used the word to control any criticism against Israel for so long that the word has lost its impact. I don't think anyone in the world can make peace with you people. The sooner Israel dissolves as "the Jewish State", and it will because of the inhumane policies towards not just its neighbours but all other western countries as well, the sooner there will be peace in the Middle East. The sooner the American people wake up to how much Israel is costing them while they suffer with homelessness, unemployment, and a gov who spends their tax money on foreigners, the sooner we get peace, but god help you lot!

you can try to deny that the temple stood there in the 1st place as well as the jewish history in this land going back 2000 years before the rise of islam, but it won't hold against any serious academic scrutiny anywhere. just remember that the jews were dispersed out of jerusalem against their own will post year 70 C.E. at the time the city was the "center of their universe", at least as much as mekka has been for muslims. the longing & expectation to one day return was a live thing rooted in something solid & real. there's no fabrication. ask the greek about their connection to ancient greece & athens or the italians about rome (which isn't that ancient in comparison) & try to deny them any of it. whoever lived in paris before the french made it into what it is, if "they" existed at all, aren't around making any claims, so your allegory isn't worth much. not everybody on the jewish side denies you your part of the claim in jerusalem. but it's you guys who are "newcomers".

What other people other than the Jewish people have ever claimed Jerusalem as their single cultural, spiritual, and political capital? What other people other than Jews, have accomplished this three times in history. This is not to deny Arab/Pales history or basic rights, but Arab/Pales will have to accommodate the Jewish reality in Jerusalem, and the Jews will also have to respect the Arab/Pales reality. But this should not include "East" Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state.

Jerusalem was never a Jewish city, the so called Jewish link to the city is a modern day invention to justify the occupation of the land by the Zionists. The handful of Jews or so who had lived in the old city of Jerusalem since the Arab conquest in the 7th century A.D never bothered with the area until the British Mandate in 1918. Previous generations of Jews who visited or resided in the city had never made any attempt at praying near the Mosque. Until the 1920`s, Jews never prayed near the site and only started demanding access after the arrival of the British in 1918 to the part of the wall of the Mosque where the current Western Wall stands. The entire history of a Jewish link to the city is a fabrication. Jerusalem is as Arab as Paris is French.

Typical Muslim build something on another religions holy site and deny them their history. This is why there is no peace, because Muslims deny history, deny reality, deny facts. Leave the Temple Mount and the Holy of Holies. End the desecration. Israel allowed Muslims to stay on the Temple Mount in peace and instead gets pieces of rock thrown at Jews praying. Leave the Temple Mount. Only peace can be from banning all from Temple Mount. Wakf needs to be removed.

These were not small pebbles, they were meant to kill, as they could easily because of the height from which they were thrown. Sounds to me as if the Arabs are preparing for a third intifada. It is not the place to which they pray, is not once mentioned by name in prayers, and it is connected to no mundane events in Muhammad's life. The city never served as capital of a sovereign Muslim state, and it never became a cultural or scholarly center. Little of political import by Muslims was initiated there. Jerusalem appears in the Jewish Bible 669 times and Zion (which usually means Jerusalem, sometimes the Land of Israel) 154 times, or 823 times in all. The Christian Bible mentions Jerusalem 154 times and Zion 7 times.

The Palestinian playbook is unchanged since the riots of the 1930's: to incite hatred against the implacably undoubted connection of Jerusalem to Jewish national history. "Judaizing" Jerusalem is like "Judaizing gefilte fish"--it was, is, and inevitably will be... Jewish.

During the 1947 conflict Jerusalem was overun by the Arabian military. From 1947 till 1967 Jerusalem was closed off to the Jewish people as well as other religions not considered "appropriate". Jordan used Jerusalem as a dumping ground. Jerusalem held NOOOOOOOO meaning for them or other Arab/moslems. It is only in 1967 the Israeli-Jews captued Jerusalem and opened the city to all religions. 3rd holiest place - MY EYE. As a holy place the Arab/moslems left it to rot. They are like little children .They whine that someone else owns the city. Jerusalem today is a flourishing modern city. WHY - BECAUSE the Israelis honor and revere Jerusalem- always.... not just since 1967. Our ancient books prove our Jewish roots. Christian books prove our Jewish roots.

There goes the never ending arguement again. I could easily make the point, that histoically Mohammed never set a foot on the rock in the dome of the rock. What difference would it make? There are a billion muslims believing this, even though it s historical proven to me outright wrong! "Legitimize one injustice with another" (as Hannah Ashrawi, alog with "blaming the victims" keeps repeating) is only acceptable for Palestinians, but not for Jews (meaning the incapabilities of Jews to pray at their hoiest site due to muslim sanction)! Wondering why Muslim clergy is so vehemently opposing archeolical reseach of the site of the Noble Sancturary/Temple Mount? Maybe they might find that the actual Jwish temple was there and has no historical connection to Islam after all! But of course the clergy only is afraid of unholy behaviour of scientists. Jerusalem is is as Arab as Paris is French. Give me a break! Jerusalem was Jewish, long before there was a definition what an Arab is.

That would be an answer to your Islamic prayers, wouldn't it? One big difference though: Israel learned from prior experiences and the numbers of Israeli civilian fatalities. A new intifada would be a death blow to any potential peace and moves to improve quality of life. So go ahead and pray. You Palestinians NEVER miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

It seems like anti-Semitism in the Arab world is reaching a pinacle of hate and incitement. The fact that they would dare call Jewish building in Israel's capital, Jerusalem - Judaization is simply incredible to hear and to read. I am beginning to once again question if we Jews will ever be able to make peace with these people.

one of the main problems is that most people partaking in the conflict,in one way or the other, are putting the guilt and responsibility unto the Other - away from themselves and their responsibility. Jerusalem is an international city. What is usually referred to as 'holy land' cannot be possessed, especially if the blood of innocent humans is shed on it- or if they are hurt at all. Humans are holy, not the rocks upon which we live and with which we bury each other.

?We plan to eliminate the state of Israel and establish a purely Palestinian state. We will make life unbearable for Jews by psychological warfare and population explosion. . . We Palestinians will take over everything, including all of Jerusalem. . . All the rich Jews who will get compensation will travel to America. . . We of the PLO will now concentrate all our efforts on splitting Israel psychologically into two camps. Within five years we will have six to seven million Arabs living in the West Bank and in Jerusalem. . . I have no use for Jews; they are and remain Jews. We now need all the help we can get from you in our battle for a united Palestine under total Arab-Muslim domination!" The 7th century conquest was merely an "occupation". So we start there. Then we need to deal with why Jews did not pray in heavy numbers at their holiest site. First, of course, they were cast out of the holy land and second those peaceful and tranquil Arabs were and continue to be an insane and dangerous lot. So, Mr. Dove, how long do we have to keep Arabs out of Mount, on which you built your Mosque, just as the Spanish built their churches over Mayan holy sites, before we can say, tssk, tssk, the Arabs haven't prayed there for such a long time.

If what you say is what Israel wanted, it would already have it. What stalling "tactic"? Claiming and developing historically Jewish places from which the Pals and their national entities, Jordan, Syria, etc., have excluded Jews, in order to Islamicize those places, is not a stalling tactic. It is rebuffing the world's most violent and barbaric colonialists whose mana is delusion and hatred.

Since Jordan was the "occupier" of the West Bank in 1948, the truth is that since 1967 Israel has LIBERATED the West Bank. This truth must be acknowledged and, as Lieberman suggests, the nation must ensure that all residents are Israeli citizens with sworn allegiance. Anti-national behaviour or incitement is grounds for deportation, or else "There's the door". This will end exclusionism since Jews and Christians show a willingness to tolerate other faiths who behave in a civilized manner. Anyone there will have to put their insanity aside an behave like human beings.

Abbas must have been either duped, blackmailed or bribed by Israel and the US into dropping Goldstone. As a result, Abbas has shown himself to the Pals as America and Israel's creature. The only way he can survive is by demonstrating he is not. Calling for a 3rd Intifada could be his only way out at this stage

No one is going to be fooled by official Israeli hasbara over this. Fanatic Jews should not be allowed any where near the Mosque compound since we all know what they are up to. It`s quite astonishing to read here the many comments by die hard deluded Zionists who keep refering to the Mosque as `mount`. Well, let me tell you something you never read in official Zionist narrative. The handful of Jews or so who had lived in the old city of Jerusalem since the Arab conquest in the 7th century A.D never bothered with the area until the late 16th century.

This is one of the most offensive attacks yet; There is no city in G-d's universe that is more Jewish than Jerusalem.
