Palestinians tell Israel: We won't accept interim deals

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad addresses Fatah-dominated conference in Ramallah.

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad said on Saturday that the foundation for peace and stability in the Middle East remains "the establishment of a Palestinian state on all territories occupied in 1967, chief among them East Jerusalem."

Fayyad was speaking at the "National Conference for the Strengthening of Popular Activity," which convened on Saturday in Ramallah. The event is being attended by senior Palestinian Authority officials.

The conference comes in the wake of a series of declarations made by Fatah officials, according to which the movement has taken a strategic decision to launch a third intifada.

Fatah is calling on Palestinians to stage wide-scale, grassroots demonstrations in the West Bank against settlements and the separation fence, though the party insists that Palestinians are not to undertake armed struggle.

"We strenuously reject all the solutions being proposed by Israel's leaders, [namely] solutions involving interim arrangements," Fayyad said Saturday in Ramallah. "We have no intention of continuing with the formula of interim arrangements and of accepting a state of swaths of territory that have no territorial contiguity."

"We learned the lessons of the first popular intifada and its results," Fayyad said. "We will act to reach a comprehensive agreement on the basis of resolutions by the international community and we will reject every attempt to once again enter this whirlwind of negotiations without results and long-term interim arrangements."

israel has proven, over and over, that it's only objective is to maintain the status quo(while further entrenching itself in palestinian territory), with its temporary deals that lead to nothing but more of same. a unilateral declaration of the palestinian state would be as well... because in doing so, and with its recognition by the united nations and the international community, they would end israel's game, which if left to its own, would continue indefinitely. with their state recognized by the u.n. as the territory outlined by the so-called "green line", negotiations with israel could proceed directly to resolving the border issues of a final status agreement. israel would be hard pressed to concede to the international recognition of the palestinian state, although not without a certain degree of bitter misgivings. but it would resolve the political dilemma faced by the israeli government over settler and right wing resistance to its withdrawal from the west bank. the strategic dilemma would remain, but that is inevitable.

No surprise that the Edomite-descendants ("Palestinians") will never overcome their hatred against Israel/Jews--which is why they were divinely forbidden after Nebuchadnezzar's passing (about 562 BC) from ever re-forming as a nation! (there is never going to be a "Palestinian state" due to that alone--and even Arabs proved in 1948 to unconsciously agree with that, when they tried grabbing for themselves pieces of Holy Land)

The Pals want their land back - perfectly reasonable, shouldn't be a problem, the UN drew a map of where the borders are. They want the occupying army out - also perfectly reasonable, 'belligerent occupation' is meant to be temporary, it's gone on for 42 years! They want the Palestinian refugees compensated - quite right too, you can't just take peoples' houses and land and refuse to give them back or pay the price. If Israel wants to negotiate some land swops adjacent to the Green Line, they are prepared to do that, as long as it's not excessive. The smaller settlements will need to be vacated, there are too many to provide security for and they've made too many enemies. Other than that, they'll sign a peace and normmalisation treaty and that's an end to it. Can't see what's holding Israel up.

Israel's long standing policy has been to negotiate over negotiations over furue ephemral possibilities. This charade , the Palestinians finally concluded, cannot and should not allowed, to go on. Israel's Netanyahu and his ilk can bellyache about the Palestinians' 'strategy to not negotiate...'. He fails to finish the sentence '...over interim agreements'. The Palestinians have belatedly, but finally, come to the conclusion that a non violent civil demonstration and resistance will undermine Israel's raison d'etre and accomplish what has eludud them since 1948.

The "palestinian" story is all wrong. They keep demanding Israel to give them land for a "state"a.k.a.iranian base.Who held the territories untill 1967 was jordan and jordan lost them fair and square to Israel.Thehy should demand jordan to compensate them with part of jordan's territory for them to have their iranian base a.k.a."palestine".B.T.W. jordan proper was invented by the sordid brits on territories they robbed from the Jewish People in 1923.REMEMBER THE Balfour Declaration!!!

Abbas and Fayyad are correct. It must be a permanent agreement resulting in a contiguous, viable Palestinian nation-state. There cannot be the threat of arbitrary Israeli invasion for "security" purposes. The Saudi 2002 plan for Middle East peace provides a solid foundation. Israeli settlers incite violence and must leave Palestine. Otherwise Israel will use contrived threats against settlers to invade Palestine. Peace can only come with the restoration of 1967 borders and honoring the right of return or compensation for land that has been confiscated by Israel.

The interim agreement at Oslo only resulted in Israel stalling any 'final status' negotiations while drastically increasing Settlement building. Eventually the whole effort collapsed into violence. There is no reason for either side to want to repeat failure.

For decades Israel has robbed and abused the Palestinian people. This has made the international community increasingly uncomfortable but they have yet to do anything about it. It should be clear to everyone that the Palestinians will not ever receive fair play at the hands of Israel. It is time for the world to take a stand against Israel. If this doesn't happen soon, then the entire world will end up paying the price.
