Palestinians losing faith in Obama administration, poll finds

Public opinion poll: 30% of Palestinians believe armed struggle is the best way to end occupation.

By DPA Tags: Barack Obama Israel news Palestinians

Palestinian hopes that U.S. President Barack Obama will bring an end to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory have significantly declined in recent months, a public opinion poll published Wednesday has found.

Only 9.9 percent of Palestinians now believe that Obama's policies will increase chances of achieving a "just peace," down from 23.7 percent in October last year and 35.4 percent in June.

The poll also found that over 78 percent of Palestinians interviewed believe the U.S.-Israel dispute over the issue of West Bank settlements is "not serious."

The U.S. has strongly criticized Israeli settlement policy, which it says has sabotaged efforts to revive stalled peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

While more than 32 percent of poll respondents now believe the peace process is dead - compared to 19 percent who believed so in February 2006 - almost 44 percent think peaceful negotiation is the best way to achieve Palestinian goals of ending the Israeli occupation and establishing a Palestinian state.

The number of those who saw armed struggle as the best way of ending Israel's occupation of the West Bank stood at close to 30 percent, while 22 percent preferred "peaceful popular resistance."

The poll, of a random sample of 1,198 Palestinian adults in the West Bank and Gaza Strip between April 10 to April 15, had a 3 percent margin of error.

Hamas has been holding onto Gilad Shalit now for over 3 years. They are no closer to getting their 3 murderer compatriots out of Israeli jail. And yet they refuse to allow for 3 other jailed Palestinians to be released along with 997 others. So Hamas being Hamas proves once again that they have no brain and no compassion for 1000 Palestinian families. And by the way..if the prisoner swap finally gets done...Israel starts to lift the embargo. But that is also not in Hamas' better interest. They make more tax money with the smuggling tunnels.

To be quite honest the concern should be who has the Iraqi nukes that no one could get to. They are still unclaimed and in Iraq. No one could get the files for them and they were word passed on location and codes. So who holds Iraq in peace holds those nukes. IF Israel holds the enemies of Iran and if Iran holds its peaceful survivors and there is a president then the two Houses dont collide. For instance five royal houses hold Israel and five royal houses hold Iran. Then there will be peace. Russia always controls Syrian politics all the way back to the CZARS that area Russian. Russia apart of both houses. Karoon-Rankoo

Are the palestinians 'losing faith' in the Obama administration or in their illusions ! What one expect if he keep doing his sums wrong ? One if not blaming himself one accuse others for his mistakes. Whether the palestinians like it or not the only way is to face facts. This conflict is crying for facing facts ! The return of the poor refugees who are kept in their long limbo for all this years is wrong. Jerusalem will never be a capital for palestine. The forces of history is against such a solution. It never was before & it can't happen now or in the future. The security of israel, like the security of any other country, is high on the agenda of any country & israel can't be blamed. It can't other than illusion to find a half way to solve these three problems. These are three core issues no administration can play around with them ! Another intifatha the same of the old thing ! More wars with Arab Counties something tried & failed & it will keep failing.

    • 21:15

Menachem Begin was the leader of the outlawed "Irgun" who committed atrocities by throwing bombs into open markets amongst other vile terrorist acts. Yitzak Shamir had the following to say about terrorism. "Neither Jewish ethics nor Jewish tradition can disqualify terrorism as a means of combat. We are very far from having any moral qualms as far as our national war goes. We have before us the command of the Torah, whose morality surpasses that of any other body of laws in the world: "Ye shall blot them out to the last man." We are particularly far from having any qualms with regard to the enemy, whose moral degradation is universally admitted here. But first and foremost, terrorism is for us a part of the political battle being conducted under the present circumstances, and it has a great part to play: speaking in a clear voice to the whole world, as well as to our wretched brethren outside this land, it proclaims our war against the occupier." I still have strong faith that Obama will put AIPAC, a foreign agent lobbyist organization, out of business once and for all. I also have faith that Obama will apply stronger american pressure on israel to force them to withdraw from the west bank and east jerusalem. Its just a matter of time and Israel knows it.

This time the Palestinian force is 80,000 strong and they have been very successful at preventing all suicide attacks so far. The WB has been involved with non-violence resistance so far.

Jason, help me understand who you think Hamas is and who they represent. Are those people claiming within and represent Hamas, independent Arabs with no Islamic indoctrinations, or just another dysfunctional tribe of Ishmael descendants. I believe that true cousins of Isaac would seek peace without conflict, if external pressure is not interferring with a meaningful dialogue of reconcilliation of family disputes. But, I've seen and heard the ignorance of those behind many true peace negotiators. Worry not in the end, the real peacemakers are called the Sons of God, the only rod they carry is truth. The enforcers of that truth are on their way. Pray for all who disbelieved and were lost but are now on their way to being found. Peace be with you. Jason.

How could a terror group be credible in making such statements. These are murderers of innocent people & you are saying that Hammas is right? Would you like one of your innocent family members to be kidnapped & blackmailed, murdered, or killed when on vacation because they are under the impression that 'the koran says so'?? Get real & think again.

Recent happenings in particular would indicate that trust may not have been been misplaced. Little doubt exists now that during his initial and maybe only term Obama is determined to make a Palestinian State a reality. He has lots of time to do just that and so far he has displayed great resolve. Let events play themselves out and it's unlikely Palestinians will be disappointed with the results.

In the end, Obama must get Israeli cooperation
    • Natallie Durson
    • 21.04.10
    • 18:23

In the end, Obama must get Israeli cooperation, willing or unwilling, in order to help the Palestinians. Currently, the Israeli government will oppose any American efforts to change the status quo. Obama has some things he can do to change that, but he hasn't done them yet. One gets the feeling that lots of talk has taken place under cover, between American and Israeli governments. It is likely that the friction between America and Israel will get worse before it gets better. This is a good thing, since it forces those wearing masks to remove them and show their true face.

meaning negotiations with Israel. Obamas' blah, blah, blahs will eventually wake up Americans from its malaise from lacking the moral fiber necessary to ultimately defend itself from an internal threat to our national security. Like the promised return of the Jews to Israel and recapturing Jerusalem, Americans will awaken from their nap and return to our founding fathers priniciples of governing, being not afraid of the bully government, by returning Washington D.C. back to the people by a resounding vote of no confidence, against a new bully pulpit mired in its subliminal zeal to institute Islamic law. Rather than protecting our God given rights through our Contitutional provisions against such threats to our national security.

I knew this a year ago. By raising hopes among Arabs and Islamists, Obama guaranteed that they would hate America even more. Israel isn't going to roll over and play dead, which is what the Arab side so desires, so there were only two remaining possibilities: 1) The Arabs would say that America CANNOT deliver Israel to them because America is weak, or 2) The Arabs would say that America doesn't WANT to deliver Israel to them because America is anti-Arab. Either way, the Arab and Islamic world will see even less reason to respect the USA and cooperate with Uncle Sam. Here we are, a year later, and - surprise! - the Arabs are unhappy with President Hussein-Obama - the best friends the Arabs ever had in the White House. The reputation of the USA is in decline and BHO is doing everything to make it even worse. This demonstrates Obama's naive approach to foreign affairs - hey it's not the Chicago City Council out there anymore! It's the real world! He still doesn't get it.
