Palestinians: IDF fire wounds two fishermen near Rafah shore

One of injured has arm severed; IDF: Palestinian boat returned from Egypt, probably smuggled goods into Gaza.

By Nir Hasson and Haaretz Service

According to Palestinian reports, two fishermen from Gaza were wounded Sunday morning from Israel Defense Forces fire near the Rafah shore.

According to IDF sources, Saturday night three small Palestinian motor boats were seen approaching the Egyptian shore and joining an Egyptian boat.

Sunday morning, the army said, the boats tried to return to the Gaza Strip, and a navy boat fired warning shots to stop them from approaching. What the boats did not stop, the navy boat began firing at the boats directly and wounded two Palestinians.

Despite the fire, the boats were able to make it to shore, and IDF sources said the boats probably smuggled something into Gaza.

Gaza sources told the Ma'an news agency that the two wounded Palestinians are Gaza residents.

They named the injured as Sami al-Kouka, who was wounded in his left arm, which was severed, and Ali Ibrahim al-Kouka, who sustained shrapnel wounds to his entire body.

According to the report, the two were fishing near the Rafah shore when the navy boat opened direct fire at them and destroyed their boat.

Even fishing boats escape the Israeli Navy vessel. Can't they get anything right these bumbling Israeli sailors? They're again going to accuse Olmert for their own ineptitude.

the jets can make sure these ships are sunk at sea. at the same time they can conduct low fly overs over gaza and keep the terrorists awake. the families of terrorists dont deserve the rigth to bury them.

A fisherman with a starving family knows nothing about holding negotiations with Olmert. He knows fishing and perhaps how to smuggle something for a little money to buy food with if there's no fish today.

Omran: perhaps the West Bak can learn to "fish"

and when i say "fish", i mean "to run from the Army when warning shots were fired and to act in incredibly suspicious behaviour". The same thing would happen if a suspicious boat was patrolling any other country and refused to stop. The Palestinians are playing games that are literally costing them an arm and a leg. Perhaps they should stop "fishing" and act like civilized humans? Spend money on education, not on weapons? Negotiate instead of throwing rocks? they have everything to gain by negotiating, yet they love to lose.

What Kind of Navy Can't Sink a Smuggling Vessel ?

This incompetence is what encourages continued smuggling. If the boat doesn't stop for inspection sink it. There is a war going on.

Boats are hard to hit. A warning shot is just one that missed the target. The fishermen know that and dont stop like sitting ducks.

In case you haven't realized yet, the Palestinians and Israel are at war. When there is a war and people are considered enemies of the state, suspicions warrant actions that otherwise would not be taken. Israelis are generally not going to smuggle weapons into Israel and use them to blow up hotels, buses and restaurants. The Palestinians, on the other hand, have been caught several times trying to do so.

lets see: the IDF has no proof that something was smuggled - let alone WHAT that was supposed to be that was smuggled and despite this they are allowed to shoot at these people? when was the last time an Israeli was shooted at for ALLEGED smuggling? innocent until proven guilty apparently only works for Jewish people, everybody else is open for shooting. thanks for reinforcing my view of the IDF once more.

... Strip by fishermen does not make the sumugglers any more kosher (proper), and trying to stop them is just as an appropriate action as trying to stop other vessels. As another poster put it, those who play with fire should know that they may get hurt.
