Palestinian 'terrorist' takes aim at Sacha Baron Cohen
Man depicted as Lebanese terrorist in Cohen's film Bruno files suit against him for $115 million.
By Haaretz Service Tags: Israel newsA Palestinian grocer from Bethlehem filed suit against comedian Sacha Baron Cohen on Monday, for the sum total of $115 million in libel damages over his film Bruno, which is equal to half of the movie's gross box office earnings.
According to the London Daily Mail, the Palestinian, Ayman Abu Aita, who is also a peace activist, said that Baron's depiction of him as a Lebanese terrorist in his recently released and controversial movie has ruined his life.
He has also filed suit against NBC, Universal Studios and famed American talk show host David Letterman for being part of the film which tricked him into meeting Cohen under the false pretext that Cohen was a German producing a film about the Palestinian cause, the Daily Mail reported.
Abu Aita also told the Daily Mail that since the film was released to cinemas this summer, he has received several death threats despite the fact that he is a firm opponent of terrorists.
Cohen is famous for his outrageous characters such as Borat, a Kazakh who travels to the United States in order to find Pamela Anderson, and Bruno, a gay Austrian who wants to regain world recognition by trying to solve the Middle East crisis.
During the scene, Abu Aita was depicted as a leader of the Al-Aqsa Brigades, according to the caption which refered to him as 'Terrorist group leader, Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade.'
The scene itself was actually filmed in a hotel on Israeli teritory near Bethlehem.
In July Letterman set out a goal to discover the identity of the man depicted as the terrorist, and traced Abu Aita down through a CIA contact.

This guy is a terrorist, not every Pal is a terrorist, but admit it, some Pals are terrorists Shame on everyone, that defends or excuses terrorism
I hope he wins the suit and Mr Cohen has to pay millions, and all the Movie companies who have promoted and produced him. He and whoever thinks he is funny, and allow him and his producers to make many millions off of humiliating people are fools!! I am Jewish, and he is an embarassment to the Jewish Community, and the Human Race, and does not deserve the money he gets for being a meanspirited Ass! I'd like to know if he's ever, given his time and money to do anything of value to improve the life another human being?!? Having them sign a waiver does not mean they understand whats about to be done to them and he knows that!!!!
Near Bethlehem, not In Bethlehem! Learn how to read properly before jumping to conclusions.
The Movie was a joke. Same thing with Borat and all his other characters. The main thing is that everyone who was in the movie including Abu Aita sign a declaration acknowledging the fact that they understand they are in a satire. End of story
sounds like the guy wants to cash in on this one. Being depicted as a "freedom fighter" would only gain him status. He gets death threats? From whom? Anti-terrorist pacifists? Give me a break!
Too bad for that guy, I still thought Bruno was hilarious
First Cohen plays a dysfunctional Arab in Borat which further deteriorates Arab image and now tries to depict them as what he thinks they really should be seen as, 'terrorists.' It seems like an arrogant cultural pattern to me.
Cohen's lies also included saying that he traveled to a Palestinian Refugee Camp (Ain el-Hilweh) in Lebanon to meet this supposed "terrorist". Basically the whole skit was made up. What makes it more astonishing is that Cohen repeating the made-up story on David Letterman with details (lies) about how he travled to Lebanon and met this EXTREMELY dangerous terrorist (more lies). All in an effort to promote the movie.
we define who our enemies are stupid. who else is gonna? of course we see them as terrorists, and they see us as terrorists. it is subjective. DUH!! were you born yesterday or what.
more likely it'll be settled out of court, to avoid the negative publicity for nbc, universal, and letterman. and there'll be a public apology included as part of it, without a doubt.
and everyone who's involved. all it took was the caption, but even without it, he's got a case... unless he was represented as what he IS; which is a palestinian christian who advocates non-violence. and it doesn't sound like that is the case. and by the way, it was letterman who consulted a cia agent in order to identify the so-called "terrorist".
sasha baron cohen is not funny at all and he is definitely playing with fire. you can't lie and cheat people and then profit off of them. not this time!
It says NEAR Bethlem... duh
Judith, I suppose you consider yourself the epitome of wit and cleverness. You are very, very wrong.
The article said "Israeli territory near Bethlehem". If you knew anything about the geography of the area, you'd know that Israeli territory is indeed near Bethlehem.
The man is mis-identified as being a leader of Al Aqsa in Lebanon and apparently as being a specific person there (By coincidence, I just watched Bruno last night, maybe you should not trust your memory). Second, being arrested as a "terrorist" is Israel is quite meaningless. Third, he is not a public figure and his privacy has been invaded. Now if he actually spent time in prison and if Cohen asked him if he spent time in prison it would be a different matter, for if those suppositions are correct it would be truth. But it is NOT truth to say he is somebody he is not, and as long as he is not a public figure his privacy has been invaded. I hope he gets the $115 million. It's outrageous the way this bastard tricks people as he does (check him in Wikipedia, he tricks people on a regular basis).
Joe... have you SEEN borat? (either the movie or the character on "DA Ali G Show") He doesnt need to have anyone make fun of Jews... Cohen does that fine by himself. "The running of the Jew" etc... Not to mention... not just with this particular case... but many lawsuits... why do people sue for the amount of money that they would never make in their lifetime? The palestinian is either a grocer, or peace activist depending on what article you read... libel or not... neither job is going to be making the man 115 million.
Many people in Palestine are against attacks against Israel. Many Palestinian are thirsty for peace. A peace that will get them out of their miserable life. (I visited and I talked with many Palestinians). When you say terrorist, what dictionary are you using? The USA considers Hamas a terrorist organization, but Russia doesn't. Iran and some Arab countries call them "freedom fighters". In the 1980's, when the USA used to support Bin Laden to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan, the USA used to call Bin Laden's group "freedom fighters", but now, they call them "terrorists". According to others, the USA army is a terrorist organization, so as the IDF (Israeli Army). What do you call a country that used a nuclear bomb against Japan? isn't this terrorism?? Britain calls the Irish National Army a terrorist organization!! Because they are fighting against occupiers of their land?! Read people, educate yourself, go visit Israel and Palestine, and then judge.
although I normally like Sacha Baron Cohen. Also Cohen went on a TV blitz, talking about how dangerous Abu Aita was and the lengths he went to get to the interview in a failed attempt to get some press for the film. He also showed a view of a refugee camp in Lebanon and then cut to an interview with him (which was not terribly amusing anyway) instead of showing the guy's grocery store. Rather lame.
I recall that Cohen was brought to the guy after inquiring through Palestinian channels that he wanted to meet someone who was a terrorism leader--and this guy showed up voluntarily knowing he was going to be approached as if he met that criteria. The guy wasmade out to look like the ass he is,and now he complains? Can he provide evidence his friends duped himand that he has documentation showing he was involved in any peace demonstrations or work? I doubt it. Why isn'the suing he buddies who brought him to play the fool? THEY are the only culprits here. In fact, Cohen should sue them too.
Hey, Abu Aita, you got your 15min of fame.
You think that israel and America have the right to dictate who is a terrorist, this man in palastine has a right to resist occupation, you may not like it,but he does.Hes not sitting bull or Geronimo were you can treat him like he is less then human, and dictate the terms. So a man who resists an occupation is a terrorist, any group that forms to resist occupation is a terrorist, wow. You have one gigantic ego my friend, and you wonder why you are at war 24/7.
I dont think so!!!!
Judith are you really making this generalization. That all palestinians are terrorists? maybe you can also make the case that there are good muslims and bad muslims; Good muslims being secular and more westernized whereas bad muslims are more fundamental. you shouldn't be so ignorant. Human nature allows any person to make a bad choice regardless of their race or religion.
This sounds like the scam the joker of a mayor in the city of Batman in Turkey tried to pull. He tried to sue the makers of Batman (the film) for stealing the brand name 'Batman'. He got nowhere except laughed out of court. Jo Witness
The article does not mention where this case was filed, but it sounds like it was in the U.S. American libel law is very specific, you can only recover money if the claims have no basis in fact. A brief internet search shows this man spent two years in Israeli jail on terrorism related charges and admitted to being a member of a terrorist group when negotiating the end of a hostile situation. His case seems to revolve around him claiming he is not a terrorist, but a former terrorist, while working for an organization that has been accused by U.S. authorities of funneling money to terrorists. Furthermore, he has to prove that Baron Cohen acted with malicious intent or negligence. For example, if Cohen was told by a CIA operative that this man was a member of a terrorist organization (as Cohen claims) and this was repeated, there is no libel case because restating an expert claim is not malicious or negligent.
One would guess that the opposite would happen....that he would be more esteemed, may be get a street named after him.
I think Baron-Cohen took the joke too far. Dunno if the suit is worth 115mm.
sue Cohen for the libel he created. This is not funny. Sacha baron Cohen is an idiot who profits from attacking , slandering and ridiculing other cultures and people . God forbid someone attack Cohen's jewishness . Cohen is the product of an arrogant culture and as long as he makes "profit" it is considerd OK....
