Palestinian kills one, wounds five people on Petah Tikva street

Kinneret Ben Shalom, 58, killed, 4 wounded in knife attack onboard minibus; assailant stopped by guard.

By Yuval Azoulay Haaretz Service

Kinneret Ben-Shalom Hajbi, 58, of Petah Tikva was killed and five other people were wounded Sunday morning when a Palestinian stabbed several passengers on an interurban minibus in Petah Tikva.

The wounded were taken to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva. Four are listed in serious condition, with extensive cuts and stab wounds. The fifth, a woman, was treated and released yesterday.

The assailant, Ahmed Kafina, 22, from the West Bank village of al-Sawiya, was arrested after being subdued by passersby. He is not known to the Shin Bet security services, which believe he was acting alone. Villagers yesterday described him as "unstable." He told his interrogators that he decided to carry out an attack after a bout of depression, sparked by his expulsion from Abu Dis University, Israel Radio reported.

Kafina's remand was exended by nine days, according to the radio report.

The incident began at about 9:30 A.M. when Kafina boarded the No. 51 minibus on Pinsker Street in Petah Tikva. There were eight other passengers in the vehicle. A few stops later, on Jabotinsky St. in Petah Tikva, Kafina pulled out a knife. According to witness statements given to the police, he shouted "Alla Hu Akbar" [God is great] and began stabbing people.

"I saw someone going berserk in the bus and did all I could," the driver, Michael, related later. "I immediately realized it was a terrorist." The driver hit Kafina with a broomstick that was in the vehicle.

Shlomi Shriker, 30, a computer professional on his way to work in Ramat Gan, sat on the back bench of the minibus. Kafina was in front of him. Shriker's family said yesterday, "The terrorist began stabbing a female passenger sitting in front of him. Shlomi tried to protect her and then he was stabbed in the arm and then in his chest. He bent over from the pain and was stabbed twice more in the back. The terrorist ran amok, he tried to stab everyone."

Shriker was hospitalized in Beilinson. "He was seriously traumatized by the incident and his conscience is bothering him because he was unable to overpower and stop the terrorist," Shriker's uncle, Shimon Shushan, said yesterday.

Another passenger, Reut Kasarian, 30, a non-commissioned officer on her way to her army base, jumped out the bus window. Her mother, Raya Kahana, said that when she answered a call from her daughter's cell phone, "I heard screams that only crazy people can make and didn't understand what was happening. It was only later that I realized it was when the terrorist was going nuts."

The vehicle stopped about 100 meters after the stabbings began.

"I saw a man running toward me and yelling that a terrorist is killing people in the van. I saw another man running from the van, holding his chest and bleeding. Then I saw the terrorist on the sidewalk holding a knife and a woman whose belly was bleeding. A man stood next to him pointing a gun at him and told him to throw down the knife. I took a two-meter iron rod and hit the terrorist in the legs. He fell and the knife dropped from his hand. He tried to rise and I hit him again, then I and the man with the gun overpowered him until the police came," Eli Haziza, 64, the deputy manager of the warehouse at the Kaniel factory, related yesterday.

Yeshurun Gavish, 25, of Kedumim, was the man with the gun. Gavish was on his way to work at the nearby offices of Millennium when he heard the screams. "I was leaving the parking lot with a friend and heard that someone was stabbing people in a taxi. I took my friend's pistol and from about 50 meters I saw the terrorist trying to stab a woman. I didn't know it was a terrorist and debated whether to shoot ... I shot two bullets at the ground near him to deter him. If I'd known he was a terrorist, I would have shot to kill and then I would have confirmed the kill," Gavish said.

Residents of Sawiya said that for several years Kanifa has tried unsuccessfully to complete his education at Abu Dis University in East Jerusalem and at Al-Najah University in Nablus. He was recently expelled from the latter institution after being suspected of cheating on exams.

Villagers said Kafina had drifted among student organizations associated with Fatah, Hamas and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Recently he had been staying mainly in the village. When he left home yesterday morning, he told his family he was going to Abu Dis University.

the news item stated that he was depressed because his Arab college would not allow him to graduate. He is mad at an Arab college, so the only way to express that is to murder Jews?! What type of society teaches this? The only outlet for Arab anger is to murder Jews? Put this mad dog out of our misery.

Sami, you are talking true peace and only such an attitude on both sides will achieve it. We obviously can't negotiate a peace treaty on the Haaretz message board but you are putting forth ideas that make sense. Palestinians want a state, Israel wants security. Extremists on both sides need to be neutralized. Terror must stop and a linked easing of restrictions by the IDF should occur. Foreign troops, in my opinion, would be an error. A land swap in exchange for keeping some of the larger settlement blocs in place is something to be looked at(you may disagree, I know). Allow me to disagree with your land mass percentage figures because British Mandate Palestine included Transjordan until it was given away arbitrarily by the British in 1921. We're not going to be able to agree on everything, at least initially, but the important thing is to start talks while making sure that the extremists don't hijack or torpedo the process.

West bank is a disputed territory. Its final status will be negotiated AFTER arab terrorism stops, not before. "Pleastine on west bank and gaza will represent 22% of Great Palestine". Arabs already got a palestine entity -it's called Jordan (part of "great palestine" as you refer to it, a territory that belonged to Jews that was occupied by arab invaders and than reconquered by turks, and than controlled by Britain) and more than 70% of its populations are palestinian arabs. As for Hamastan in Gaza - read my lip, you won't leave to see a great filistine, you will see a miserable hamastan begging for international support, money and food for generations to come.

Sami - the peace is something negotiable and if in return to 97% of the land you start war, it is too steep, is not it? For 97% you give your 97%, right? BTW: as I recall, from 1948 to 1967 there were not a single Israeli in West Bank and Gaza, right? Why did not Palestinians create their state for almost 20 years? Please let me know this one, I am interested in your opinion.

Sorry I thought I answered you. As one suggested, lets not go back to history and lets put realistic solutions nowadays. Palestinians want israeli occupation army to leave west bank. In return, Israel wants peace and security. How is this acheived? The wall on the 1967 boarders and troops from Europe and USA to guard the 1967 baorders ( based on Palestinina side ) to ensure no violations. Shas, Mifdal, and extremist settlers must be contained. Hamas , Islamic jihad, and any armed factions must be disarmed. If you talk about true peace, the wall, the troops along the boarders, and total separation between Palestine nand Israel will bring peace. Whats wrong with that? But if you want to keep the west bank or parts of it, then no need to talk about peace. After all, Pleastine on west bank and gaza will represnt 22% of Great Palestine that was under British mandate. I think this is a good deal for Israel before it is that good for Palestinians.

Alex: I am not a religious type of person but I condemn any type of suicide bombings against civilians. I am very solid on this and have profound belief that civilians should not take part in such conflicts. At the same time, when Israeli fighter jets drops 1000 lbs bomb on a building in gaza to kill an extremist leader, is this justified when 17 others are killed .. no guilt on thier side except that they are innocent people living in the same building that the extremist walked in !! Also, if Palestinians have jet fighters and tanks and they responded to the Israeli army activities and bomings by firing back at them using the fighter jets and tanks, is this considered terrorism ? Citizens on both sides are innocent and should not be harmed. But again, any one sincere about getting a lasting peace knows well that ending the occupation and totally separating palestinians from israelis is the only solution.

We did not have snakes until then. But we did not forget our kapa haka, the marae and we never will accept the British monarch as sovereign. The Treaty of Waitangi was treason and British simply annexed. We had great people like Rewi Maniapoto that stood firm against aggression. The settlers took our gold in the Otagot hey got it we need to live with that so don’t try to patronize me Free Aotearoa true Maori land!!!

Alex... you talk sense. Just a reminder, Barak offered 97% of West Bank and refused to withdraw from areas along the Jordanian boarders. In addition, he wanted Palestinians to sneak like rats into Jerusalem without giving them a foot hold in the areas of East Jerusalem. So all the Palestinians and their belongings, homes, and lands simply has no meaning or history . You either go for complete peace or no peace. Give me a clear answer: if Israel wants peace, why not build the wall along the boarders where an insect can not cross ?? This is the test of peace .. any one who wants peace knows this is the shortest and fastest way for security and peace.

Alex don't be surprised at Sami's position. This is very typical. The Arab states and the Ahmad Shukeiry-led Palestinians threatened Israel with destruction in 1967 with its vulnerable borders, Israel captured those lands in a defensive war (Jordan jumped into the fray when Egypt lied and claimed that its tanks were rolling into Tel Aviv) and now it is expected of Israel to give up those lands before the Palestinians announce what they'll give in return. Had Israel lost, no-one would've shed a tear. Always one step behind, the Pals wouldn't be in this predicament if back in 67 they hadn't attempted to destroy Israel. They'd have even more real estate if they'd accepted any one of a number of partition plans back in the 30's and 40's. Basically, the Pals think they should have the luxury of threatening and attacking Israel at will and still expect all of their claims to be met after they lose repeatedly. Interesting approach.

I hope I get an honest answer: what do schools ( regular and religious ) teach Israeli kids inside the illegal settlements ? From the comments I hear from Jewish settlers, the message is clear: do not trust any Arab ( muslim or christian ) ? What is taught is even worse. Israelis and Palestinians can blame each other from decades to come. The losers will also be both Palestinians and Israelis. Unless an end to this stupidity and extremism on both sides, next generation will suffer. Peace can be made by enemies. End occupation pf Palestinian land, build the highest wall money can buy and place European and American troops along the 1967 boarders with authority to respond militarily to any violation by Palestinians, then I can assure you that peace will be the common thing between Palestinians and Israelis. Without these steps, you chose to continue the suffering of Palestinians and Israelis.

Sami why don't you stop living in the past as though history suddenly stopped in 1987. After the first intifada, and in spite of the fact that Pals cheered as Iraqi scud missiles slammed into Israel a few years later, secret talks in Oslo led to what should have been a historic breakthrough. But Arafat could not bring himself to make the ultimate compromise that Arab states had refused to make for decades: accept the existence and legitimacy of a State of Israel in the ME. The rest is history. When the Pals are ready to make true peace (electing the Hamas is not auspicious) there will be peace. Until then, the Pals will live in self-imposed misery while Israel continues to develop. What a waste.

in 1987, 1st Intifada ( uprising against Israeli occupation ), only ROCKS were used. If you were living in Canada then, I am sure you watched American TV channels ( ABC, CBS, and NBC ) where rocks were meet by bullets, murder, breaking bones,...etc. How many Palestinians were killed ?? That is a proof that Israeli politicians and Israelis who dream of greater Israel are putting the lives of innocent peace loving Israelis in danger instead of giving back the land and gain peace. Again, build the wall as high as you want as long as it is on your side, inside your land, and not on Palestinian land. If you want peace for you and generations to come, dis-engage by any means including the wall. Did you get the message loud and clear: Palestinians are telling ISrael "LEAVE US ALONE".

Amazing comments........ freedom but wrong claims can not go un-corrected: 1- Why to give any land to palestinians when they had nothing to start with? You must be kidding and wrong !! unless you are echoing Golda Maeir when she said : Palestinians.. who are they? By denying Palestinians their rights and land, you are against the whole world ( including the USA). A Palestinian state is a must. Actually you are against the vast majority of Israelis including Sharon, Rabin, Netnyaho,..all negociated with Palestinians and want a state in a form or another. 2-The Israeli woman killed today is innocent while Palestinians killed were terrorists ? So the 4000 plus Palestinians ,including 800 children, were all terrorists !!! Or may be killed by mistake by the army !! 3-If Israel wants peace, the road is easy and clear: build your wall along the 1967 boarders to make permanent dis-engagement with the Palestinians... unless you like Palestinians this much and do not want to let go.

My People or what remained from are 300,000 & The Maoris were the land?s original inhabitants they live in "New Zealand"(&"the Cook Islands") on reservations and the white plan is even to take our beaches to make more profit. The irony is the names for Maori land now are a Dutch place & an English pirate we the natives come from Polynesia & we were there already before the 14th AD. We lived like the people of Israel in Canaan until the Romans change the name to Palestrina. They came took everything. To avoid more war we agreed to divide the land like you did in 47. There was a treaty signed in 1841, & was never honored by the Europeans, There were many injustices committed to our people. The NZ people have never were committed to hearing injustices & righting any wrongs. The government has spent billions of dollars repressing the Maori &the job is not finished. For all NZ`s can not rightly stand at the top of the world for human decency. Thus New Zealanders like Brian feel free to criticize the actions of other nations. Israel would do well not to listen to people from NZ. Their actions unfortunately speak louder than words. PLEASE FREE MAORI LAND.

Israel took those territories in 1967, in the course of a war declared by the Arabs. Those territories were occupied by Jordan and Egypt. Later on, when those countries and Israel signed peace accords, Israel offered them the territories back but they refused to have them. Jordan and Egypt didn't want anything to do with the "Pals" and let them down. Israel is giving them electricity, water, etc. "Pals" could move where they wanted if there were not so many terrorists among them who want to murder Israelis. I believe there should not be checkpoints. It would be much better for everybody to send the "Pals" back to the countries where they came from, build the fence quickly and seal Israel up.

It won't be long before we see mass expulshion of "peace-loving" muslims from "freedom-loving" Europe. For your reference, according to Franznazi, "the ocupation" started in 1948, not in 1967.

Egyptian leader Sadat came to the Knesset and started negotiations with no pre-conditions. The basis was land for peace and he got all of the land back for true peace (even though a cold one) Peace with Jordan did not involve land for peace as there was no land dispute. It simply formalized a de facto situation. The 1993 peace talks with the Palestinians began on a basis of mutual recognition and the renouncing of violence as a political tool. Unfortunately, the lands that were handed to the PA (fully armed by Israel) were used by extremists to launch terror attacks against Israel. When the PA didn't act against those groups, it became clear that the PA was, in fact, using terror for political leverage. Fight the terror sincerely, restart talks, and the Israeli public will surprise you with its generosity (remember that Isr govts are but the reflection of public mood). Continue the terror, elect Hamas (no less), ask for it all before giving anything, and peace will be delayed

Israeli occupation is responsible for such acts. Earlier today, 3 palestinians were killed in Gaza, more lands confiscated, another part of the wall is erected, and the list goes on. One way to peace: end the occupation, go back to 1967 boundries, find a just solution to Jerusalem's issue and then enjoy peace. I can not believe that until now many Israelis believe that terrorists are behind all the violence. You are talking about people, an entire Palestinian people fighting the Israeli occupation Once this truth sinks in, you will make decisions that will make you, you kids, and your grand kids live in peace next to a peaceful Palestinian state, one that has no army, no tanks, no jet fighters.

Franzen, your #16 answer must at least be commended for its honesty and transparency. You apparently have no qualms about drawing a parallel between the IAF killing members of the Al-Aqsa Brigades, a group that has carried out scores of terrorist outrages, and a Palestinian boarding a minivan taxi and randomly stabbing civilians trying to get to work or go about their day normally. You also are very revealing when you speak of the 1948 occupation. That view fits perfectly with all those who believe, as does Hamas, that the territories taken over by Israel in a defensive war in '67 are not the true "occupation". Rather, the very establishment of Israel in 1948 is what's illegitimate. Ending the "1948 occupation" is doublespeak for dismantling Israel altogether but that language would sound too extreme and might put you in the same boat as Iran's Ahmadinejad or Hamas. And you certainly wouldn't want to sound like anything but a moderate searching for a fair peace in the ME.

There is no culture of martyrdom or suicide among the pilots of the IAF and so no need for the "incentive" of 72 virgins. The Israeli pilot who, as you correctly point out, carried out a precise strike against a "handicapped in his wheelchair in his seventies" has the gratitude and admiration of an entire nation, something infinitely more important and valuable than the mythical allure of 7 or 72 or 700 virgins. Because - a small detail that you forgot to mention - that "poor" quadriplegic just happened to be directly responsible for the deaths of hundreds of innocent Israelis (including Israeli Arabs). His successor, whose hands were just as blood-stained, met a similar fate a month later. Those who want peace with Israel (as did the courageous Anwar Sadat of Egypt and King Hussein of Jordan) will get a fair and honorable peace. Those who clamor for war will get exactly that and should be ready to pay the price.

They have shown for decades that dismantling Israel is more important to them than building a "Palestine". If their intentions were decent, why could they not draw crowds to demonstrate for peace, for their own rights? Like an anthill kicked over, they throng the streets whenever they are offended. Or whenever there is a major attack in Israel, when they dance in the streets and pass out candy. They deserve no more concessions. The borders should be sealed and not one of them allowed in.

A couple years ago a book was published about all the anti-Jewish, anti-Israeli political cartoons printed by the Arab press. Page after page of nauseating bile spewed by the "Education" ministries of the Arab world. Never heard a 'peep' out of anyone. But let a couple cartoons of Muhammed hit the press, the Arabs rear up like they found out the 70 virgins had all been streetwalkers. But what should we expect from a religion that offers the death penalty to people who want to convert out? That offers the death penalty to people who 'insult' the religion? That offers the death penalty for perceived slights to family 'honor?' Where at civic and family functions, the most popular pasttime is to shoot automatic weapons into the sky and endanger everyone? Thanks to Arafat, generations of Palestinians have been educated in an atmosphere of hate and perversion, where parents gleefully say that they wish they had more sons and daughters to send to blow themselves up to kill Israelis.
