Palestinian central bank chief resigns citing 'personal reasons'
Abbas to okay George Abed resignation; Hamas in Gaza said to downplay Abbas meet with top Hamas men.
By News Agencies and Haaretz Service Tags: Hamas Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas FatahThe head of the Palestinian Authority's central bank has tendered his resignation to Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, an aide said on Saturday.
The aide, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said Abbas was likely to accept George Abed's request to step down as governor of the Palestine Monetary Authority (PMA) due to his "personal circumstances".
Several PMA sources confirmed that Abed, a former senior official at the International Monetary Fund, has told staff he was resigning after two and-a-half years in the post.
Private banking sources said they believed that personal rather than policy reasons were the main motivation for the governor leaving. There was no immediate word on a successor.
The aide to Abbas said: "Dr. George Abed has informed the president of his resignation. So far, there has been no official response from the president."
He described the departure of Abed, who is credited with substantial reforms of the PMA, as a loss to the Palestinian people but believed the president would accept the request.
Western officials have credited the PMA with reforming the banking system and implementing international rules, including pressuring Palestinian banks to sever ties with militant groups.
The institution is mandated to manage a Palestinian currency once a state is established. Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza now use Israeli shekels, U.S. dollars and Jordanian dinars.
Hamas in Gaza said to downplay Abbas meet with top Hamas menHamas' Gaza Strip spokesman Friday called a meeting earlier in the day between Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and senior West Bank Hamas officials meaningless, due to Abbas' refusal to negotiate with Hamas and his ongoing talks with Israel, Israel Radio reported.
According to the radio, Sami Abu-Zuheri added that Hamas' leadership in the Gaza Strip was aware of the meeting in advance.
Abbas met Hamas officials in the West Bank on Friday, but reiterated he would not hold formal reconciliation talks with the Islamist group unless it gives up control of Gaza.
Hamas forces routed Abbas's secular Fatah faction in violent clashes in Gaza in June. Abbas then sacked a Hamas-led government and appointed a Fatah-backed administration in the West Bank.
"I met with Hamas officials and told them there would be no dialogue with Hamas until they reverse their coup first," Abbas told Reuters in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
Abbas said he met Hamas lawmaker Hussein Abu Kwaik and a Hamas-backed former government minister, Naser el-Deen al-Shaer.
Abbas spokesman Nabil Abu Rdainah said two other Hamas members were also present at the meeting at Abbas's presidential compound in Ramallah. Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters in Gaza Abbas had invited the group to his compound for prayers, but said the meeting was not linked to dialogue between Hamas and Fatah.
"The prayers in the Muqata came after an invitation by Abbas to some Islamist figures, including some Hamas officials. It was not linked to any kind of dialogue between Hamas and Fatah."
Last month Hamas said it was ready to hold reconciliation talks with Fatah and hinted it might be ready to give up control of the Gaza Strip. But Fatah ruled out talks unless Hamas first cedes control of the coastal territory.
Jerusalem has warned that dialogue between Fatah and Hamas could torpedo a peace deal with Israel, which Palestinians hope will lead to statehood.

It is important to remember that Palestine as a country is a myth.It does not exist now and there has never been a state called Palestine.Nevertheless,if the monetary authority were serious it would try and recover the millions of European aid money which Arafat exported to Toblerone land.At present the mainstay of the Gazan economy seems to be smuggling, blackmail, drug running, protection rackets and extortion.Perhaps the man would not have resigned had Israel cut off electricity and fuel supplies to the Gazan zoo in order to help Gazan civilians restore a sensible government.
He must have been caught with his finger in the sweet honey and before he was going t be thrwn to the lions decided to take off with a small treasure in his pocket. In the next few day there will be news of him seeking asylum in some obscure dictatorship. North Korea comes to mind.
Urgent need for a new wife, I'm down to two only, bromise you would be my most beloved third wife, do not cry of habbiness, I know you cannot wait to get here, or mabybe I should come to Bthurst, sounds like lovely blace you have there but it is much more fun here in Gaza these days, the skies are full fireworks all night long. So blease, I am imbatient!
They're Jews and they're part of Israel. You can't argue us away.
It's hard to determine exactly who and which ethnic tribes lived when and where in the backwater of the Ottoman empire. According to my ME friends, there were no strong civil courts, no land surveying, and no registries or documentation. People just knew who to defer to, and which places to avoid. But here in the upwater areas of the Seminole Nation, we know exactly who has stolen our land. Seems to me that it's you. Hmmmmm..
What's fit for the goose is fit for the gander. If Palestinians whose ancestors (or some of them) migrated into Palestine during the Mandate 'belong' elsewhere, so do Jews who immigrated during the Mandate and afterwards. Stop trying to have your cake and eat it too.
If Palestinians are "just Arabs," why did Palestinian nationalists call their newpaper, established in Jaffa around 1911 (before the Mandate) "Filastin?" The Palestinians are the people who lived in Palestine in 1948 and during the Mandate. Some of them at that time were Jews: Samaritans and Ottoman Jews. Some still are: Samaritans. Samaritans are both "Arabs" and "Jews."
what does a semite look like ? have you any photos from 70 ad? the bulk of israels jews derive from arab/muslim countries! ashkenazais are a minority . they are dark skinned and black haired !
pay the price for the holocaust, for European crimes. Israel should have been created in Germany, not in the homeland of the Palestinians. Remember, 90 of Jews are not Semites..they are European Ashkenazis of Khazara origin.
are polish, Russian, and Khazari. The Palestinians are more semite-looking than 90% of Jews.
That Judea and Samaria were settled by Jews in history. Gaza and Ashkelon region was settles by Philistines , not paleatinians. Northern Galil regions were swamps and hills. Central Shaton Region had Arab landless Fallahs on lands owned by absentee landlords from Syria and Lebanon, in XIX and XX centuries until 1948. They run away when the war opf Independence against Arab neighboring armies attacked. So here you proved with a slip of tongue (Freudan Slip That we jews settled mainly empty land devoid of Philistines, who vanished centuries ago and a samll Fallah Arab population. Sttlers in Samaria and Judea (WB) have then a valid claim! Thank you for your admission.
just read the origins of the jewish people in the bible, that's the reliable source of information.let's start with eber[hebrew],he had two sons-peleg and joktan, peleg's children stayed in the middle east and joktan's children went to then mount of east.according to bible scholars, the cushites[descendants of ham]lived in the arabian peninsula.it meant that arabs were the one who were black and not the jews.
who as you now know are simply a group of Arabs who have unfortunately been left ' homeless and stateless'....... US and Leaders of the Western World feel obligated to find a homeland for these millions of homeless displaced Arab Refugees - while Arab Leaders themselves remain unconcerned and impervious of their own Guilt in having convinced Arabs to leave their homes in Palestine.....! Consequently World Leaders seek to PROPOSE A STATE AND HOMELAND for these millions of Arab Refugees, and where else but in the tiny land of Israel! Hence, this is the problem facing the Israeli/Palestinian Conflict today, when Arab Leaders persistently DISMISS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY towards their Arab Brethren with their 99.09% of land and instead foist the whole burden on to Israek's shboulders with its 0.01% of land! Is such a farce understandable? Maybe for the sake of Oil.......
It is not what I learnt. The Jewish people are descended from Abraham who moved from place to place, from Mesopotamia to Canaan and on and on he moved. As for Ethiopia, thAT seems to be the Ethiopian Theory. The Jews have never been known to be a 'black people' and 'black is black' always and forever. Our Lord Jesus was a Jew, olive-skinned with streaked light hair they say The reason for that is there was no sun-block nor shelter from the blazing sun in those days when Jesus would walk from place to place in his Homeland preaching and serving His people while the sun burnt his skin and bleached his hair. There is no evidence whatsoever that Jewish people were ever black. David who fought the Philistine Goliath was a beautiful young Jew with red hair and green eyes and we go back thousands of years. David's manly beauty has forever been portrayed, even by Michaelangelo in his famous Statue Of 'David'.
are not as mysterious as you think. They appear 'mysterious' only because they do not go by their proper name which is Palestinian/Arabs which then tells you that they are ARABS who have been living under the British Mandate of Palestine, had homes and gardens there and fled heeding a call from Arab Leaders to flee the country after the Arab/Israeli War of 1948. Another Group almost fifty percent who have elected to call themselves 'Palestinians' are Arab emigreit workers or their descendants from different neighbouring Arab Countries , Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon etc.etc. who entered Palestine for work in the 40's. They ultimately became the 'homeless and displaced Persons' when after the 1948 Arab/Israeli War they wished to return to their Arab homelands, but their Homelands rejected them. They then had to return to Palestine for Shelter where they were then cared for by UNRWA and are to this day. Consequently, and simply put, they are ARABS.
ther is no hard evidence whatsoever that khazars converted en masse to judaism. this is another myth and invention ! no doubt the queen of sheba had 1000 children ? another fable without any hard evidence !
a little research would have teach you that the philistines are not the ancestors of the palestinians. the philistines are "the people of the sea" who occupied ashkelon and were a kind of greek people.
Hello Dagma, Without meaning to sound argumentive, evidence strongly points to the fact that the original Jews and Hebrews originated in Ethiopia. For example, please read: "The Originial Jews and Hebrews." http://www.geocities.com/Joao_marri/africapart23.html Please also notice the conversion of the Khazars who are said to make up 90% of todays world Jewish population. From that aspect Jews could be recognized as a 'race,' but not with the lineage of the original Jewish people. Surely it is not a sin to be recognized for who and what you are, which is a convert to Judaism since the 8th-9th Century. Surely it takes nothing away from the sincerity of ones (in this instance Jewish individual) own religious belief, to honestly acknowledge history. Kind regards.
who are they?are they jordanians or egyptians?don't they look like egyptians to you?
...huh?
Thanks for the clarifications. However, weren't the ancient Jews mainly confined to Judea and Samaria in the west bank? I believe I read that the ancient Jews never controlled much of what is Israel proper today. This seems to be the irony of creating a Palesinian state in the actual Jewish homeland, while Israel is created on land that was always arab.
The Philistines were a people quite apart from Palestine. The Philistines were a sea-faring warring group of Aegean origin and were the indefeatabke enemy of the Jews with whom they were always at war until David a Jew finally obliterated Goliath the Giant PhiListine with a Catapult. Indeed, the Philistines were living in the land of Gaza in their time. They have since died out through their many wars. 'Philistina' was the name givem by the Romans to the region we call Palestina today when Jews were the natives of the region. .
and on the 19th November 1947 the UN followed by the US and he USSR declared the establishment of the Jewish State with the 'Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel' ....to which Arabs disagreed and waged a War against the Jews and were defeated and lost much of their land to the Jews during this battle.
You are correct. Also "Philistinia" was in the south western portion of The Land, where Gaza is now. The area they lived in was about 10 to 15 times larger Than the Gaza Strip. BTW I think the Romans were not too good at translating Aramaic into Latin; (or they really didn't care)when they tried to rename all of the The Holy to Philistinia, during their occupation, it comes out as "Palestina" and later through the tratition of language, it comes out as Palestine.
...."whereas the jews left [Palestine] after their defeat by the Romans...." Why don't you say the Jews were FORCIBLY EXILED INTO THE DIASPORA ... and wherever they were always kept their faith never ceased to pray and hope to return to the Land of their Birth [Palestine] one day. Anyway. your telling of the Ancients was all wrong... just to remind you that the Jews were just as ancient as the Philistines with whom they were always warring, reemember Goliath? the Canaanites, the Hittites, Assyrians and the Baylonians etc.etc. Better learn your Ancient History lakshmi and dont twist it to suit yourself. Others have studied it too..... Chou.
Surprise surprise.
who were in the region prior to the arrival of the hebrews, the Philistines,Cannanites, jesubites and many more.It is the descendants of these people who converted to Islam in the 7th century A.D. and became arabised. They never left the land, whereas the jews left after their defeat in the 2nd century by the Romans. When the zionists came to Palestine in late 19th century, the jews were only a minority of 6%in a dominant Muslim & Christian majority. Here are the stats: 1880-jews 6%of Palestine 1914-10% 1936-28% 1947-32%
How to end the fight without losing face. . . The important thing is that Hamas and Fatah are both clearly trying to now, as opposed to two months ago when they were only speaking through third parties. Olmert has muffed the chance to keep them apart for good.
why do argue about palestinians and philestines and wether we have any rights or not ...dont u n know that all history -if u depend on it -is a fiction ... now whats the difference between u and the europeans when they elliminate the indians ..i believe that this land is for the strongest and everything else on earth as well so plz take the land but u wont be stronger for ever nothing true ..evrything permitted a boy will come and will scrutch a new history for this land and what will have been happened
the motive for a Palestinian state is NOT to create a Palestinian state for their own people, and it -never- has been. The only motive is to take land from Israel as part of an ongoing effort to remove Israel as a nation, whether by attrition of land, treaty, or demographic infiltration. This is why we have "Palestinians" in the first place. They were offered the entire Transjordan, but that was not good enough, because there was still a small portion allocated to Jews. They have had opportunity time after time.... but as long as any "compromise" includes territory for Israel, the Arabs will simply not agree, regardless of what argument/justification they concoct to blind the liberal buffoons in charge. Peace is irrelevant to them. Terror is irrelevant to them. Statehood is irrelevant. History itself is irrelevant to them. It is only that Israel stands and they want it destroyed. I ask all Israelis the same question: "What would David do?" think about it.
Is a robber breaks into my house and steals my cash, jewelry, credit cards, and car.... then he says he'll give back my credit cards if I accept that he is the rightful owner of the cash, jewelry, and car. This is nonsense - but its what you are saying by analogy. You are telling people who are living in refugee camps for 60 years that they must accept that do not own the land they do own, an in exchange you will "give" them sovergnty over a piece of crowded desert where they are incarcerated against their will. How generous you are!
In actual fact, as you say these people have no right to a State but the US and the western world felt pity for a homeless people and decided to PROPOSE A STATE for these homeless and stateless Arabs by giving them a 23rd Arab State. But WHY AN ARAB STATE IN THE JEWISH HOMELAND AND NOT IN THEIR OWN ARAB LANDS?
a nationality' - as yet! But they are hoping that in time they will be with Good Behaviour and Good Intentions of being a peaceful neighbour to the Jewish State, then there is every chance that the Proposed 'State of Palestine' will become a reality. However, it seems such an iniative may only be reached depending on many things such as accepting the existence of the state of Israel, and stopping all Terror. But can Terrorists achieve that without doing what they know how to do best? Quassams, rockets and shells still keep pounding at Israeli territory each and every day. Which Country in the world would accept such atrocities flung at them daily?
how can you post this ill informed and half digested stuff here? At least you give people something extra to laugh at ..
But you are right that Israel should shun all talks until terror stops - plus incitement etc. Since the present talks are simply regurgitated bull you might like to look at .. http://www.israelinitiative.com/PersonalMessage.aspx?lng=Eng I am not saying that it is THE answer but it has more creativity than the present rehashed slop Mike
be clear, is a permanent phenomenon brought about by the Arabs of this Land, Hamas in particular when they, through a brutal force evidted the legitimate government in the Gaza Strip and installed their own within their entity of Hamastan. What they have done was to separate the two territories geographically, politically, economically and socially from one another. Indeed, the have formalized what has been the case since at least 1948. And since this is the case, any future solutions must be saught separately for the West Bank and for the Gaza Strip. Any other view of reality here is simply not correct.
Ben Great propoganda but check your history books. The Palestinians or "Philistines" have been living in area longer than any Jews. The Jews escaped from Egypt and took over Jerusalem from the people who lived there and built the walls. All this time their neighbors, the Philistines were there. Meanwhile the original Jewish tribes were forced out after a century or two, were dispersed, intermarried and converted various other people in other lands. But there was NEVER a Jewish homeland for all (semetic and non-semetic) worldwide Jews before 1948. So its clearly NOT "YOUR" land to expel others from. So Israel is the unnatural aberation, not the fact that an Arabic group has lived there for thousands of years. Much like the Kurds, who also have never had a homeland, but who have lived in the same place for thousands of years. I suggest easing off of the racist ideas and embracing peace and humanity.
Abbas is not a popular leader - and Hamas is growing. The US is trying to prop him up by giving him some phoney "state" - but Israel with their arrogance refuses to even throw him a bone. So Abbas will need to re-unite with Hamas. The telltale signs are there ... Abbas invited Hamas.
interesting. you meet with hamas to say you wont to hamas. whats next?
NOT a nationality. They are ARAB; they ALREADY have MORE than enough states. TAKE ISRAEL BACK. Jerusalem is the holiest site in ISRAEL and is NOT PART of arabic culture in anyway. They are ARABS -NOT- "Palestinian" and have NO right to a state by taking OUR land.
Praying together isn't conducting negotiations or even officially talking, but it is an Arab way of getting together those that have refused to get together. So Hamas and Fatah are on speaking terms again and that is good.
So after Olmert's bizarre and confrontational statement this morning, Abbas shows that he knows what is going on. Maybe he isn't a sap after all, but was it enough to make the US worried?
Hamas will replace Fatah before the end of the year. That`s what Hamas says. It`s fifth column has already infiltrated the higher echelons of Fatah. And that`s what Fatah itself confesses. So, Mr. Olmert, will you still accept to talk with a looser Abbas from a looser Fatah?
How to grovel without bending. That is the problem Abbas faces now. He seems to have fully integrated the ideas that Israel and the US hung him out to dry, and Annapolis was never intended to succeed. Reunification of Gaza and the West Bank is necessary, and Saudi is willing to try and broker a deal with Hamas. How to make kissey-face with the guys you tried to whack? First, you have to move from 'no talks, no way" to "talks after concessions." Thus, without groveling, Abbas has made a concession.
