Palestinian architect of Munich attack slams Spielberg's film

Mohammed Daoud says has no regrets over attack, thinks new film would not deliver reconciliation.

By Reuters

The Palestinian mastermind of the Munich Olympics attack in which 11 Israeli athletes were killed said on Tuesday he had no regrets and that Steven Spielberg's new film about the incident would not deliver reconciliation.

The Hollywood director has called "Munich," which dramatizes the 1972 raid and Israel's reprisals against members of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), his "prayer for peace."

Mohammed Daoud planned the Munich attack on behalf of PLO splinter group Black September, but did not take part and does not feature in the film.

He voiced outrage at not being consulted for the thriller and accused Spielberg of pandering to Israel.

"If he really wanted to make it a prayer for peace he should have listened to both sides of the story and reflected reality, rather than serving the Zionist side alone," Daoud told Reuters by telephone from the Syrian capital, Damascus.

Daoud said he had not seen the film, which will only reach most screens outside the United States next month.

But he noted that Spielberg arranged previews in Israel, where some have accused "Munich" of lacking historical accuracy.

Several Israeli historians have also complained about what they see as a moral symmetry in the film between slain Olympians and the Palestinians assassinated by the Mossad spy service.

"Spielberg showed the movie to widows of the Israeli victims, but he neglected the families of Palestinian victims," said Daoud. "How many Palestinian civilians were killed before and after Munich?"

Mossad assassinsThe Munich attack was "one of the pivotal moments of modern terrorism" he told Los Angeles Times in rare interview last week.

Daoud used different terms.

"We did not target Israeli civilians," he said.

"Some of them [the athletes] had taken part in wars and killed many Palestinians. Whether a pianist or an athlete, any Israeli is a soldier."

Spielberg's producer, Kathleen Kennedy, told a preview audience at Princeton University that a Palestinian consultant was used for "Munich." She did not say who it was.

"I do feel that we spent an enormous amount of time in discussion and put effort into exploring a fair and balanced look at the Palestinians that were involved in the story," she said, according to an official transcript of the event.

Historians noted that "Munich" presents Mossad assassins as having hunted 11 members of the PLO, while other accounts put the final Palestinian toll at as many as 18.

Daoud survived a 1981 shooting in Poland that he blamed on a Mossad mole in the rival Palestinian faction of Abu Nidal.

Though Israel allowed him to visit the occupied West Bank after 1993 peace accords, and Mossad veterans say the reprisals are over, Daoud said he feels he could still be targeted.

"When I chose a long time ago to be a revolutionary fighter I prepared to be a martyr. I am not afraid, because people's souls are in God's hands, not Israel's," he said.

The Mossad is state sponsored terrorist organization, Their harm is much grater than any Palestinian can ever do, that should be a pillar in the film unfortunately its not!! Palestinians are desperate for the world to look at their plight also that is wasn?t accomplished, Spielberg should make film about the long history the Arabs and Jews have together, how they are brothers, and how Europeans always treated them and killed them. Should of make film about how to live with each other in the land Palestine and every where in the Middle East. That?s what I would call a prayer for peace. Thanks Ahmed.

I am nor a bit surprised for the "opinion " of mr. Daoud. History shows that Arabs are cowards when it comes to a direct fight also called "mano a mano". Like cowards they need a whole bunch of people to give them "strenght"??. Specially when they atack unarmed Israelis, but when Israelis the remove their shoes to run faster

Munich is not anti-Israel,and neither is Spielbeg. Spielberg is a victim of the Diaspora mentality. A jew must act according to the law even in the jungle! A Jew is not entitled to self defence! A Jew has to look for Justice even his life is taken. (This exactly what the Hasidics Jews did when a Hasid was kiled during the Brooklyn riots, it took two days for the Mayor Dinckens to stop the riots. It took TWO TRIALS to convict the Kiler in America!). Using this logic Israel had to bring to trial the terrorist like it did with Eichman . Unfurtunately it is not realistic to bring to Israel the terrorist (even in this case Israel had to violate the international law). The realistic situation is to hand the terrorist to the Europian justice for a short trial and after this the terrorist could walk free and continue their terrorist activities. Spielberg presents the solution : According to his concepts such a Jew has to live in the Brooklyn diaspora. Israel is located in region similar to the jungle! Only the strong survive! The price for this is high ,but there is no alternative! Einstein understood this perfectly when he renounced the precidency of the state of Israel.

Max You are right about one thing Daoud is a Dog. You are wrong to write off all palestinians as not belonging to the human race. Imagine if you replaced the word Palestinian with Jew. What you would have is a violent statement of anti semitism made against all jews regardless of opinions on individual issues. You think it is ok to complian when people make such ridiculous comments about jews? But you have no hesitation in commiting the same offence against Palestinians. As jews we should be more aware of the evils of this type of thinking than any other people on Earth. Also if you beleive that palestinians do not deserve a state there can be no peace for Israel and this means the future is bleak. Drop the hysreia Max, Focus on the real issues and maybe Israel can secure a peaceful future. This is the ultimate goal, continuing to lump all palestinians together with mist Murderers like Daoud will only prolong the war.

"Israel on Average has comitted more Attrocities then any country since Nazi Germany!!" This would make sense if it were true. But alas, it is not. In the last 3 years alone 2 million people have been displaced in Sudan with tens of thousands killed and other tens of thousands raped and maimed. Last year over 100,000 people had thier homes destroyed in Zimbabwe by their own government in an "urban" renewal scheme. Since it's invasion of Tibet, China has systematically destroyed Tibeten Buddism and moved millions of "illegal settlers" into Tibet to transform the population. The war in Central Africa in the late 1990's killed over 2 million people (some say over 4 million all told). In Rawanda, 500,000 people were killed in a 100 day period. Up to 300,000 children (total in over 30 countries) have been forced into military conscription. In Liberiea in the late 1990's it was common that children had limbs chopped off by other warrior children who often had been kidnapped for conscrpition, drugged to enable round the clock hyper-active mayhem, and sent to kill and die and maim. In the 1970's the Khemer Rouge (sp?) killed 2 million (close to 1/3 of Cambodia's population). Since 1967 who has killed the most Muslims? Saddam Hussian, without a doubt. Over a million Muslims died in the war started when he invaded Iran. Over 300,000 of his own people died due to his ruthless supression of dissent. (that is over thirty years -- 10,000 per year -- unfortunately at 30,000 over 3 years, the U.S. invasion hasn't really changed that figure. But we must aknowledge that for the last year and a half a vast majority of those killed have been at the hands of Islamic bombs). Who killed the most Palestinians in the last year? Other Palestinians. Atrocities abound. On an individual level every death and every home demolition is a tragedy. Israel is not guilt free. But, by any mesurement you choose (land usurped, # or % of populations killed or injured, houses demolished, individuals tortured, propoganda spewed, sexual assault as a mode of intimidation, etc.) What has been done in the name of Israel is small potatoes compared to other conflicts. Do you disagree David? If so, why?

I read thru the letters and realized nobody gets it!!!!!!!!!!!! Revenge is spilled blood in vain. It does not do any good but it destroys the humanity of both sides. At this point no side is innocent and they better realize this before more mothers loose their children. I think the film aimed to be neutral and make people realize that revenge, "toughness" will not bread peace. You cannot "teach a lesson" by force. That is why it came to where the two nations are now; with the only common denomination, hate and sorrow. It is a shame they can't "grow up" and think about their children" Yes, nobody gets it!!!

One of the standard lines used by supporters of Spielberg (or for that matter Gibson) is "if you haven't seen the movie you can't criticize it.". However in order to see it you will have to put down $10 for a ticket. That will result in fattening Mr. Spielberg's pocket. That is the one thing that I will never do. Let's review. Spielberg has made a movie based on a book which was proven to be historically inaccurate. He then chose a screenwriter who doesn't believe that Israel should exist. He then gives an interview in Time Magazine which equates the violence of the terrorists with the response of the counter-terrorists. Mr. Spielberg has lost his moral compass. For him everything is equal. In his mind it is "I'm OK, your OK, the killers of Jews are OK." Now don't get me wrong. I will see this movie. I will just have my friend at the local video store sneak me a copy. Better yet I will buy a bootleg copy. Anything not to give money to a man who has a problem with strong Jews living free in their own land.

You don't think the terrorists intended to kill the Israeli athletes? What planet are you on? the terrorist always plan on killing....that is their intention, that gives them their high. Why would they undertake a mission like that (and as always hide their cowardly faces) if they did not intend harm to these athletes. Remember they killed one of the athletes when they took over the compound and left his body to rot outside of the apartment. As far as the architect of the Munich attack is concerned what he has to say is of no importance what so ever. He is a murderer on the loose....a vile character who deserves to see the inside of a coffin with his face down so he can see where he is going...and to even write about him makes one sick to their stomach. As for the movie I think Spielberg has lost his senses if he thinks this will bring the two sides together...the only thing that will bring Israel peace is the end of the Muslim world and we all know that will never happen.Israel can give and give to the Palestinians but it will never be enough until the cesspool that was once the fictional Palestine has spread and taken over all of Israel....then and only then will the Arabs be content and then they can continue their desire to take over the world and dominate it with Islam (you know the religion of peace).

Little wonder that Dauod is miffed. He didn't get a gig in the movie; neither did his paymaster and holocaust denier Yasser Abbas. The film suggests that his efforts had something to do with ending Israel's occupation of Gaza and the West Bank which were then considered Egyptian and Jordanian territory but we all know that Black September's avowed aim was the destruction of the State of Israel and even a low life like Dauod will tell you that. How did Spielberg allow his former good name to be degraded by allowing such filth to be produced?

I saw the film and, frankly, I found it too long and boring. One thing I wish to say to Palestinians, whose suffering no one can deny, that there actually was a population exchange.More than one million Jews were forced to leave their ancient homes in Moslem countries leaving all their possessions behind. Some of these communities were settled in that area at least a thousand years before the Moslem conquest of the seventh century. I think it is about time both sides use some common sense and try to settle the current conflict, so that they can both do some positive work on developing their countries.

In Mohammed Daoud's autobiography, Memoirs of a Palestinian Terrorist, first published in France in 1999, and later in a written interview with Sports Illustrated, Daoud, now in his seventies, writes that funds for Munich were provided by Mahmoud Abbas, Chairman of the PLO since November 11, 2004 and President of the Palestinian National Authority since January 15, 2005. Though he didn't know what the money was being spent for, longtime Fatah official Mahmoud Abbas, aka Abu Mazen, was responsible for the financing of the Munich attack. Daoud is probably upset that he wasn't in the film so he's getting attention by giving interviews. This is like Osama Bin Laden giving interviews about how he is covered and explaining his "side" for slaughtering innocents. And hey, Daoud- if you don't want Palestinian kids to get hurt, then tell your cowardly Palestinian terrorists to stop using Palestinian kids as shields and to stop hiding in PA neighborhoods

I remember vividly the life tv-coverage of the shoot out at the Munich Airport. The German police was outraged when armed Mossad agents appeared and started shooting at random at the Palestinians and their hostages, which resulted in all these deads. The Mossad apparantly never requested and never got permission to act this way in Germany and they certainly had no permission to import or carry arms. In the aftermath, there was a serious political crisis between the B.R. Germany and Israel over this illegal and uncoordinated action. The German authorities had gone to great lengths to avoid any victims and had reached an agreement on this with the hostage takers. Israeli lives were apparently of little importance to the Mossad as long as they could liquidate the hostage takers. I am looking forward to see how this scene is presented in Spielberg's film. Both the hostage taking and the irresponsible attack by the Mossad were afterwards considered by many neutral observers as unforgivable criminal acts. Joe

None of the liberation movements or combatants ever attacked Olympic Games except the Palestinians. Olympics were a time when all wars stopped. They were revived in modern times a symbol pf peace between people. By plannning the Munich attack and killing the Israeli Olympians, the Palestininas and its leadership proved that they do not belong to the human race. Until they evolve and mature they do not deserve a state either. As for Daoud there is no point in vasting a bullet on him. Let him be on the run for the rest of his life with a feeling of a hunted dog.

I agree with M. You-Bell whole heartedly! He is so correct as the Arabs make great cowardly terrorists, but horrible soldiers. How incredibly "Kafkaesque" to even report on an Arab murderer/terrorist's opinion of Spielberg. As George Patton once said, "No poor SOB ever became a hero by dying for his country or cause, he became a hero by making the other guy die for his country/cause." On the lunacy of Martyrdom. There is no honor in such a mindset, only the celebration of the culture of Death.

Spielberg can pray for peace all he wants. The problem is the Palestinians are praying for peace when they can have all of Israel. Speilberg might be rich and a talented filmaker, but he doesn't want to believe that the Palestinians want all of Israel, not peace with Israel. Please tell him that the Israel-Palestinian war is NOT a film, but reality.

it is sad that the response is a knee-jerk reaction instead of a concise, specific criticism of the film. speilberg made the movie about a specific event and its aftermath. also, the palestinian apologists go unanswered with regard to claims of killing civilians that either "all israelis are soldiers" or, like daoud says, since some of the athletes served in the army they deserve to be slaughtered along with the ones who did not serve. it is a shame that moral equivalence is so widely accepted as legitimate. if it were fairly applied israel would be given her due fair shake in all of this.

I'll refrain from any personal attacks or profanity so that this has a chance of being published here. What if your mother were taken hostage by Palestinian terrorists and then killed in the initial act of taking hostages (as some were - oh but they weren't INTENDING to kill anyone) or in an inept shootout when the Germans wouldn't let trained Israeli teams rescue the hostages but used their own Keystone Cops. Would you still feel it a relevant point that the terrorists hadn't intended to kill anyone? Although I dispute that they didn't intend to kill anyone, I think that any reasonable person would think it irrelevant even if it were the case.

A cold blooded murderer, has the gaul to attack Spielberg for not consulting him about his film. This mohammed daoud lives in the scum capitol of the world, surrounded by scum who's only reason for living is to create more scum. You as a newspaper should know better than to print such stupid rubbish, giving credit to someone who has cold bloodily killed fellow Israelis.Maybe you would like to invite him to the kneset so he can justify why he killed 11 athletes in Munich.I am disgusted at the trash you are printing and the trash people who answer to some or all of it.being a left wing newspaper does not mean giving every scum bag time and space.

Not every Israeli is an IOF soldier, and if they were, that doesn't give any body the right to kill them when they are in a civilian "athletic mission". The important point is that the Palestinians didn't intend to kill the hostages, but the rescue operation was so bad that the athletes were killed. I hope the movie is a real prayer for peace, and the truth it conveys is not my truth or the Israeli government truth, I hope that it is the truth.
