PA negotiators forced to call off talks after blocked at checkpoint
Chief Palestinian negotiator Ahmed Qureia informs Israel he wants to move negotiations to a third country.
By Reuters Tags: West Bank checkpoints Middle East peace PalestiniansPalestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas' negotiators called off talks on Sunday ahead of a U.S.-sponsored peace conference, saying they were stopped at West Bank checkpoint.
Palestinian officials said chief negotiator Ahmed Qureia and other members of the negotiating team were stopped by Israel Defense Forces soldiers near Jerusalem while on their way to meet their Israeli counterparts to try to draft a joint statement ahead of the Annapolis, Maryland conference scheduled for in late November.
Qureia said his team was held at the West Bank checkpoint for 25 minutes and was asked to keep waiting, but the negotiators refused. They were expected in Jerusalem for a meeting with Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, the head of the Israeli negotiating team.
"The Palestinian delegation is very angry," Qureia said. "We don't go to negotiate with them in order to be humiliated. We represent the Palestinian people and the Palestinian cause this is a humiliation we can't accept. We will propose never to conduct negotiations in Israel again."
"We cannot carry out negotiations like this," Qureia said. An aide said Qureia informed Israel that he wanted to move the talks to another country.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev said Israel regretted the incident and pledged it would be investigated. He said Livni talked to Qureia, and he hoped their meeting could be rescheduled as soon as possible. "Important work needs to be done, gaps must be narrowed," Regev said.

I thought those rockets just hit the ground. Thank you Yishai Kohen for the update. ;)
It's their duty? I am sorry - but SS poeple voiced the same excuse.
A lot of IDF soldiers in the WB have deeply felt rascist ideas regarding their racial superiority. Its deeply ingrained. They view all Arabs as undermenschen. They are of course many Israelis with more rational attitudes. Being an occupier is very corrosive of the moral fibre.
Ahmed Qureia never sounded so angry for the treatment of regular Palestinian people on these checkpoints, who stay for hours on their foot rather than Authority cars. Do they care about the Palestinian people they represent, or only themselves, in addition to the salaries they enjoy "as representatives of the people". It is enough to mention that those are not the true representatives, that are not the elected ones, but rather the USA favored ones. They don't represent the Palestinian people who are 60% below poverty line while driving luxurious cars and own villas.
There are,I know many thoughtful, caring human Israelis but I am afraid they rarely respond to Haaretz articles. The ones who do respond are the most stupid ,racist, bigoted, unreasonable, vile people I have ever come across. If they represent Israeli opinion then there is no hope. They do not want peace, they have intention of making peace. They wouldn't what know peace looked like even if it was thrust in their faces. It is not the Palestinians who are the problem it is these nutcases who spout racism at the drop of a hat, when they,as Jews, should be all too clear where racism leads. But then again I think you are probably too thick to understand anything. God help us all.
Say Victor. As all your posts are pretty much the same old garbage, you should familiarise yourself with auto post.It will save you sitting at the computer hour after hour writing the same old adolescent piffle. BTW are you aware that someone went and built an Apartheid Barrier right down the middle of your 1922 mandate and your beloved Israel signed away your hopes of a new home for the Palestinians. Why not read it sometime and avoid making a fool of yourself here day after day. get those beanos and dandies out.
You are so right, this is why Hezbollah held the IDF and IAF in check. With the help of US bombs and other military hardware, this cause alot less embarrassment to the cowards and terrorists IDF and IAF,in this case bunkers stopped the terrorists.
Even if everyone needs to be caged to communicate. Keep it real. It may take a great deal to get these people beyond themselves.
"israel regretted the incident and pledged it would be investigated"... now THERE's a worn out and empty line for you farouq! it's used for the murder of women and children, the needless destruction of homes, the indiscriminate artillery fire into residential neighborhoods, severe beatings and killings at "security checkpoints", et al. of course...only the very high profile "incidents"(those that happen to catch international eyes), are ever really investigated, and those are always deemed "justifiable"; right? even emptying the clip of an m-16 into a 12 y.o. girl at close range as she lay dead after being shot for walking too near a security fence. ahhhh...yes...that worn out line: "israel regretted the incident and pledged it would be investigated"...
ahhhh...were that YOU could spend a day in their shoes and then repeat what you've just said. by the way...the use of the word is prevalent among all third party observers, religious delegations and volunteers, and human rights groups. most palestinians just silently live with it in their day to day existence.
Yishai Kohen, it will come the day where US will donate to Israel suitcases and bags to assist you in making travel arrangements.
[If the PA negotiators want attention and respect from Israel, then they should look to Hamas for an example. If they want to continue to be treated like a bunch of clowns, let them apply to Livni for a rescheduled "meeting".] exactly!
It would seem that not just Hamas wants to saotage the peace talks.
Looks again as if there is a command and control issue in the IDF. An investigation is indeed warranted. Many questions need answers.
IT IS THEIR DUTY
ians! the pa should lead their people into arab palestine called jordan ! there is no place for them inside israel !
Israel tries to humiliate the Palestinians on every possible occassion. No more talks. Israel doesn't want peace - time to call a halt to their silly games.
If the PA negotiators want attention and respect from Israel, then they should look to Hamas for an example. If they want to continue to be treated like a bunch of clowns, let them apply to Livni for a rescheduled "meeting".
Palestinian officials said chief negotiator "Ahmed Qureia and other members of the negotiating team were stopped by Israel Defense Forces soldiers near Jerusalem while on their way to meet their Israeli counterparts to try to draft a joint statement ahead of the Annapolis, Maryland conference scheduled for in late November"
Dulcet tones, perfect English, we know those apologies by heart. And that's what we imagine is diplomacy. It isn't. It's the attitude, stupid. This Annapolis conference preparation is a joke!
This would have been very funny had it not been so very sad. Israel does not respect the Palestinians. Respect has to be earned through sacrifices by the likes of Hamas and Jihad. When Israel pays the price for the occupation, only then will it negotiate and respect its adversaty. the Gaza withdrawal is a case in point. Hamas should take over the West Bank and drive those losers out of power.
Israeli's are nothing but dumb - the soldiers that did it should be thrown in jail.
How could the military have known it was really Abu Alaa in the car ? And if they did, well shucks, anyone can say he's on his way to see Tzipi Livni and how do they know it's true ? Peace talks you said ? What peace talks ? Alright, they knew, but maybe they couldn't do anything about it. It's been dominating people's fate for years, causing them to die at checkpoints, to be shot in the head, to be forced to strip, to be turned back. It's called "procedure". That's all there is to it. Nobody decides and nobody is responsible. What else is new.
Unbelievable stupidity and lack of thought on the part of the offficers at the check point. They should be repremanded and all crossing points should be alerted to treat PA negotiators with utmost respect going forward. This is inexcusable and must not be allowed to happen again.
I do not belive this is an accident. Either something was "up" with the so-called negotiating delegation... OR Someone does not want these talks to proceed. OR BOTH!!!!
your people strape bombs on themselves in order to kill israeli's. your people fire rockets at israeli civilian areas. your people (more than half of them) want israel destoryed. given all this, you are shocked about the checkpoints?? give me a break. mass arrest all al akqa, hamas and islamic jihad members and supporters. maybe then checkpoints would not be needed. anything less means you live with checkpoints. did the checkpoints make you cry? whats 25 mins in the name of security.
when they face an unpleasant experience of which they are the fundamental cause of its existence. I would suggest to my Arab friends to seek and find another word if they want to impress their listeners. "Humiliation" has out used its usefulness as a propagandistic term. "Humiliation", ha!
ahmad Qurei does not represent the Palestinian people as he wrongfully alleges. he represents a bunch of Fatah thugs and that is all. He represents his personal interests in being awarded more contracts to build settlements and jew-only roads. I am glad that the soldiers at the checkpoint were humane enough as to save the Palestinians the atrocities that this thug wanted to promote.
is the highly inflated sensitivity bordering on paranoia if not full paranoia. If a party to a conflict sincerely wants peace it would not jump on any occassion and claim humilaition. Anwar Sadat sincerely wanted peace after successive defeats of Egyprina Armies in 1948, 1956,1967,and 1973 (their army was sourounded by IDF led by brilliant tactics of Ariel Sharon).Sadat came to Jerusalem and addressed the Knesset before an inch of Sinai was returned to Egypt. Qureia,Abu Mazen,PA and Hamas are hopeless political dwarf and not state leaders.Likewise Arafat was terrorits,a crook and a dictator in making, before even achieving a full state for Arabs on WB and Gaza. Hams after pretending to participate in a coalition with Fatah at the first opportunity carried out a putch. There is no hope in hell for a trully functional and peacefull Arab Stae on WB and Gaza. It's a pipe dream of loosly connected, crime prone clans. The incompetent intrigant,Olmert tries to pretend otherwise. Somalia PA?
Shame on Israel. Your occupation is the only thing standing in the way of peace...
What goes around comes around. Abu Ala'a (Ahmad Qurei') had supplied Israel with the cement it needed to build its Annexation Wall and now he is being denied entry at the very checkpoints he helped build. Ahmad Quraei' an enemy of life by all means is reaping what he had sown
They'd be waiting for hours before being admitted into Jordan and they would have been turned away or arrested trying to enter Lebanon or Kuwait. The "proud palestinian peple" are opportunitic murdering beggars throwing up a tanthrum at places they deem safe to do so.
of such importance. Is he ready to serve his people? Seems much too concerned over his own appearance. It is good to test the spirits.
Here's more proof.
I guess Israel thought it was time ( once more ) to teach the palestinians who's boss!
Goodness... - this again demonstrates so many things that are wrong with Tzaha"l and the occupation in general. Some pimply teenager is given a gun and the right to act as a mini-god, and he assumes, exercises and all too often abuses that power with great gusto. He (or indeed she) never answers to anyone for the injustice perpetrated. Sickening. mls.lists@btinternet.com
