Outgoing naval commando chief slams Navy's conduct during war
Colonel N.: Navy prevented essential operations, Navy vessel hit by Hezbollah missile not probed properly.
By Amos HarelThe outgoing commander of the naval commando sent a harsh letter to Israel Navy commander Major General David Ben-Bassat several months ago, in which he expressed his dissatisfaction with the conduct of the Navy's top echelon during last summer's war in Lebanon.
Colonel N., who completed his term as commander of the naval commando last week, accused Ben-Bassat of limiting the naval commando's freedom in carrying out offensive operations. He also criticized Ben-Bassat's failure to investigate in depth the incident in which the Hezbollah fired an Iranian-made missile at Navy vessel "Hanit" off the coast of Lebanon, killing four and wounding dozens.
Highlights from N.'s letter were publicized Thursday on Israel's Channel Two news.
In his letter, N. maintained that it would have been wise to make more frequent use of the naval commando during the war, even in highly dangerous operations, in light of the threat faced by the home front.
According to Channel Two, N. wrote that while his unit was eager to carry out operations in Lebanon, senior Navy officials hesitated, the Hanit incident still fresh in their minds. N. maintained that this hesitation cost the Navy essential operations.
N. also mentioned the complacency with which the Navy's elite regarded the mission on which the Hanit had embarked. He also wrote about the simplistic way that the post-war investigations into the Navy's conduct had been carried out, and the way those investigations intentionally circumvented the major faults and failures.
In addition to Ben-Bassat, N. also addressed his harsh letter to former Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Dan Halutz. The letter was sent before Halutz resigned from his post, and was still the chief of staff. Ben-Bassat was apparently extremely hurt that N. had seen fit to circulate his criticism outside the Navy.
N. excelled while commanding the naval commando, and is considered one of the IDF's most valuable commanders in recent years. However, N. is also considered within the IDF to be an outspoken and direct man who often got into altercations with his superiors for expressing unpopular opinions or notions that did not fit with the IDF's official stance.
Ben-Bassat had earlier faced much criticism within the IDF when he decided not to resign following the Hanit tragedy. Several major generals felt that he should have taken responsibility for the debacle and stepped down.
An IDF spokesperson issued a response to N.'s letter saying "the Navy commander encourages his soldiers to express their opinions and promotes free thought." The spokesperson added that the excerpts from the letter that aired on Channel Two are not entirely accurate.

THis is the man of action Israel need, independent mind with the courage to speak out, and the courage to face the enemy without fear of numbers but outcomes!!!! Promote this colonel yesterday!!!! The establishment is to corrupt to consider who isn't in dirtied by this system!!
Hey Matthew, the beaches in Netanha is beautiful. Israel is a wonderful country! have fun while Walid picks up the scattered rubble and shattered glass around his stoneage neighborhood. Walid, enjoy your "Divine Victory" from hell!
chiefs of IDF thought in last july that the war was scientific (radar, satellite, sophisticated weapons...)They are wrong, all wrong. This war was a "rats war" an underground war, like WW1(14-18).It was a real closefight, and for that even special units were not training.A fight hand to hand.
seamen on board ships exclusively and marine commandos in operations on shore (divers, intelligence on shore, destruction)from the sea.general roll is that. But, marine commandos can have other attributions only on the ground, if they have forming. They exist in some countries, mixed units with marine commandos, paracommandos and others. In Israel, army is too divided in compartments
In light of Mr Peretz not being able to use binoculars and other obvious military issues If the Israeli military has become who you know rather than what you know run military I would suggest learning Arabic. Only battle seasoned plus book educated leaders should be in charge of the military. Any elected official appointing anyone without these qualifications should be charged with treason. One major mistake can have Nation destroying results.
cousin, listen israel fights her wars with one hand ties behine her back.we are under the microscope of the world and while we did bomb lebanon not only 10 years back like you mentioned in your post but most likely 15-20 years back.did we want to do it no,did we have to do it maybe not,but lessons must be learned from this battle but in no means does this show weakness. we are fighting a wel funded guriella group that hides amongst civilians. its a tough battle.when i served in gaza i never knew who was out do do harm or who was on the way to work trying to provide for their families.if hezbollah was to fight a way conventional warfare is fought we all know the results.its tough to fight someone who during the day is a farmer/mechanic/etc and at night picks up arms and fights.but syria and lebanon now realize that there are consuqences for terrorism and they are under the watchful eye of the intl community.this battle had weak leadership but i promise you next time look out!
Hizbollah: hundreds of terrorists dead, medium range missiles all destroyed, 4000 missiles and 39 dead (mostly Gaililee Arabs), thousands of pro-Israeli country's forces in S. Lebanon spying for us, Lebanese army in South Lebanon for first time in decades, Sami the baby killer is still rotting in prison where he will die a lonely pathetic death, 200,000 have fled Lebanon since last summer, Nasrallah's attempted coup has been a total failure, Hizbollah hated more than ever withyin Lebanon, 1,000,000 cluster bombs in South Lebanon, Nasrallah had to apologixe, S Lebanon not being reconstructed. Nasrallah is hiding in caves. Anything else you need to read? I am too busy working for a computer company today. Will enjoy the beach tomorrow morning. Thanks for playing ;)
The navy is treated as the poor man in the millitary the airforce and ground forces get between them about 80% of the anual millitary budget and the navy gets whats left. They do not get the same respect as other branches if the IDF like the airforce, they dont get the big money and are generaly not appreciated the way they should be .. and their contributions are not seen to be as usefull .. if the paratrooopers said they could play a bigger role in things they would be sent out there first thing if the navy wants to send its comandos the attitude is dont worry about it we dont need you but thanks for the offer. Dan Halutz and the rest of the men involved in defense need to start treating the navy better.
"dozens" of Merkevas "lost"? More like 4, around the same number lost to accidents. Hanit "put out of business"? More like went back for some repairs and was back in business a few days later. Maybe you are confusing it with the Egyptian civilian ship you sank? Golani is an infantry brigade, hardly the A-team. Million landmines? When did Israel lay them? During the last war, I think not. Radioactive missiles? This like the "poison gas" ballons we were meant to have sent. As for the clamour, we had the same in 1973, did the Arabs "win" that war too?
for great people something typical to do is to soul search, in order to come out even stronger. Israel didnt have its back agasint the wall, there was some foot dragging , and some politicians worried about the fallout, but Israel overall has a better place strategically then before the war, as far as hizbullah is concerned. the world is used to see Israel a clear winner in very dicisive war, this was not a dicisive war, and ther was no clear , because ther was no clear country or clear army. had it been agaisnt Syria or Iran, the Israeli might would hve shone as always. still though we wish no harm to our neighbours in the north. Salam.
The naval functions in the Lebanese war including their published unpreparedness after ?Hanit? was seriously hit where at least questionable as per officially released information. The sharp critic of ex- commander Colonel ? Naval Commando? cannot be fully understood and weighed owing to the partially published letter to Chief of Staff Dan Halutz. IDF spokesperson stated ? excerpts from the letter that aired on Channel Two are not entirely accurate.? Neither became the reader prevy to the IDF expert inquiry committee and to the action where Hanit was hit directly with a considerable number of dead and wounded. These internal critics which should be encouraged for the benefit of all should be dealt with by the Knesset Committee dealing with military / navy problems as here details must be given which at the other hand are military secrets. ? Let us see whether Winograd Commission with its - reference limitation - dealt with this part in which form and what will be published of the details.
let those who failed in their posts make the appropriate conclusions.let the critics have their say and let the next generation of commanders understand they must excel if israel is to survive.
Israel has to make up its mind whether it won or lost last July's war. Despite having bombed Lebanon back 10 years in time with 160,000 shells and missiles some of which were radioactive and a million land mines and having used F16s, Apache helicopters and modern naval vessels, American and Israeli surveillance satellites and Lebanese spies, the real end result of the war is coming out in bits and pieces without the cosmetics. Dozens of "invincible" Merkavas lost, the ultra-modern ship Hanit put out of business, the A-Team of Israeli commandos, the Golani stopped in its tracks, the most moral army in the world immorally left stranded without food and water at the front, a Chief of Staff that resigned and a country clamorously demanding the heads of the Defense and Prime Ministers because of the war, and you say you won the war? Hate to too think of what would have happened if you would have lost.
Halutz got into trouble for planning the war and Olmert and his cronies were to involved in it also. Olmert has no Balls to even be in the place wheren operations are put together. The USA learned that in Vietnam the politicians tried to direct the war it was a failure. Colonel N needs to be promoted just fore the fact we have a soldier thats willing to say what needs to be said and is willing to do what needs to be done during conflicts. Here is a soldier that gets altercations with his superiors for expressing unpopular opinions or notions that did not fit with the IDF's official stance. WOW a soldier that takes action, and leads. Maybe the IDF needs to make him a general because who ever has that position from the last war needs to be demoted
Admiral Rickover inventor of the American nuclear submarine. Was a pain in the ass and was quoted as saying 'If your not making waves your not underway'. . .dommage 'Colonel N'
Israel is a small nation, and has limited resources. This is counterpoised by severe national security problems. Thus Israel cannot afford incompetence or failure. Thus failure must be questioned for the existence of incompetence. There are many modes of failure, some of which involve incompetence, others which involve a lack of initiative. Israel needs to honestly investigate every failure with intent to understand what caused the failure, and what can be learned from it.
