Olmert vows not to repeat 'past mistakes' of prisoner swaps

Israel comes to a standstill for two minutes as sirens wail and Israelis stand to honor their fallen.

By Haaretz Service

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, telling bereaved families of terror victims Monday that their feelings would be taken into account in seeking the release of captured soldiers, pledged not to repeat "mistakes made in the past," when terrorists freed in exchange deals again engaged in deadly attacks on Israelis.

Israel came to a standstill for two minutes earlier in the morning, as sirens wailed and Israelis stood at attention to honor the dead. Official ceremonies were held in 43 military cemeteries throughout the country, attended by government ministers, MKs, officers and bereaved families.

Addressing the memorial service for victims of terror, Olmert said that "in the range of heavy and agonizing considerations involved, there is, of course, an honorable place for consideration of your feelings and those of the bereaved families, the victims of acts of hatred and terror."

Olmert stopped short of a promise not to release Palestinians held for lethal attacks on Israelis. But he did vow "never to repeat the mistakes made in the past, the result of which was an increase in terrorism and the return of released terrorists to acts of terror, which took the lives of many Israeli citizens."

Earlier in the day, Olmert, addressing the families of fallen IDF soldiers on Memorial Day, said that Israel would weigh every diplomatic initiative and could make "very painful concessions" in an effort to reach peace.

Olmert told mourners gathered at the national cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem that Israel's debt to its fallen included "not letting up, nor despairing, in believing and the vital effort to attain the hoped-for peace, peace with security.

"We will weigh with great seriousness every diplomatic initiative, we will take advantage of every chance, we will be prepared for far-reaching compromises, and even for very painful concessions, as long as our vital and existential interests are safeguarded, in order to fulfill our burning ambition for peace."

Israelis across the country stood at attention for one minute on Sunday night as sirens were sounded to signal the beginning of Memorial Day, which will end Monday evening with the traditional torch-lighting ceremony on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, followed immediately by the opening of the festivities of Israel's 59th Independence Day.

Obligation to abducted soldiersOn Sunday night, Acting President Dalia Itzik said Sunday that Israel would not forget its obligation to abducted Israel Defense Forces soldiers, during an address to the official Memorial Day ceremony at the Western Wall in Jerusalem's Old City.

"We will remember the wounded and our obligation to bring back the abducted [soldiers] who are being held by Hamas and Hezbollah as well as our obligation to seek information on the fate of missing troops," added Itzik.

"The war for the establishment of independence is still ongoing and the road to peace and security is still long," Itzik said. "We are surrounded by enemies who have yet to accept our existence and we must prepare to deal with threats from near and far."

"On this evening, in with the nation unites to remember the fallen, we must remember what we have thanks to them, the array of the achievements of the State of Israel, which is still young and fragile, wrought with storms and dealing with disparity, and is nonetheless a light unto the nations," she continued.

Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi told those attending the ceremony that the IDF is doing what it can to rectify the problems it encountered in the Second Lebanon War.

"We have thoroughly investigated the last war and are engaged in correcting the malfunctions," he said. "We must do all we can in order to worthy of the heroism of those who fought in that war."

Ashkenazi also talked about the importance of a strong army for the country.

"Fifty-nine years since the rebirth of the Jewish people, the IDF stands on guard for the nation and the land. We are the People of the Book, but we also know to grasp the sword when the time comes," he said.

"The last year was a difficult one for Israel and the IDF, names have been added to the stone tablets, and rows have been added to the cemeteries. Often I'm asked if we will swing the sword forever, when will we achieve peace and prosperity. My answer is clear and resolute: Only a high-quality and determined IDF based on the best of fighters can bring the region to recognize that negotiations must only be conducted at the negotiating table," he continued.

"We are not an army that desires war, but rather a defensive army, but if war is imposed upon us, we will do all that is necessary for the residents of Israel in their homes and tranquil borders."

I'm sorry, but you have to speak to them in a language they will understand. Perceived weakness only makes Israel's task more difficult. Israel should immediately "arrest" many hamas members (and their families) and promise only to release them if and when our soldiers are released alive and well. Tell them that the list of prisoners they are demanding will never ever be released if our soldiers are killed... that a year will be tacked on to all of their sentences for every additional day that our soldiers are held. Such strong language they will understand. Anything less, and we may never see our soldiers again. Releasing terrorists will only guarantee more kidnappings, more murders of Israelis.

While Nasrallah is publicly declaring, once again, that soldiers should be kidnapped for political leverage, we are negotiating to give them 1000 back as a reward for doing it last time, which resulted in a war where we lost 100? Have we all woken up on some insane planet? Would the founders of Israel, the only truly successful leaders we have ever had, even have considered such nonsense?

You're deeply pathetic, Star of David. The remarkable thing is how quickly the capture and release of our sailors has been forgotten over here. Now that our people are safely home it has long disappeared from the papers and our consciousness. The "squirming" you talk of is taking place only in the mind of a Zionist as riddled with hatred of Britain (though more probably just me) as you. Israel, meanwhile, for all its bullying and destruction of Gaza and South Lebanon, is still as far away as ever from getting its people home.

Let them lead us to the glory of Victory we once knew and a Memorial Day with no new names added to the 'List'. Let our enemies learn......

That is interesting that you call the IDF offensive. I believe their past has shown different. Every way has been started by the other side. Weather it was 1948, 56, 67, 73, 81, etc. Remember who keeps corssing boarders and kidnapping soldiers. That is an act of agression. Israel is only responding. The best way for the Pals to get what they want is to peacfully protest. As long as you kill and fire rockets, the world will show you no sympathy and Israel will retaliate (not instigate) harshly! The future of the pals is in your hands... how will YOU react?

It only embitters the Pals more and more, to our disadvantage.

    • 19:47

Olmert is the worst PM Israel has ever had. The list keeps growing as to why he needs to step down as soon as possible. As far as prisoner exchange he never said what needs to be said and that is. 1. NO PRISONER RELEASED IF THERE IS BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS. 2. ISRAELI BLOOD IS WORTH AS MUCH AS TERRORIST BLOOD 1 FOR 1 SWAP OR NO DEAL. 3. IF ANY HARM COMES TO CAPTIVE IDF SOLDIERS THEN ALL ON HAMAS LIST COULD START ARRIVING HOME IN BODY BAGS. This would even the playing field. As far as OLMERT he needs to be replaced by BENJAMIN NETANYAHU NOW. Olmert should be told either resign now or you are no longer allowed to make any deals regarding Israel and Arab countries. Olmert has a 3% approval rating. At what point will the Israeli people protest and demand his resignation.ISRAEL HOW MANY MORE SCANDALS, INVESTIGATIONS AND VERY BAD FOREIGN POLICY WILL IT TAKE TO GET OLMERT REMOVED AS PM?

Take away all the ‘politicalness’ of the story, I think that Israel shows the true meaning of Memorial Day. Having grown up in the US and seeing how Memorial Day is here, I was lucky enough to visit Israel last year for Memorial and Independence Days...such a change in attitude and respect for those who have fallen in service for their country. So many are forgotten in the US, but for Israel, they are not forgotten and every person (including myself while there) can feel the deepness of the day. When the sirens went off that morning, it hit me...I only hope that the sense of Memorial Day continues to live on, and I could only wish that it could be instilled here in the US.

You have transformed our history and brought honor and dignity to every Jew. Your sons and daughters have given us so much pride. We pray for you and those who have fallen.

If Abbas is correct then who would muslims blame for all their problems? Would this also solve conflicts in Africa and Asia? That Abbas does talk a lot of B.S. The only thing that M.E peace would prove would be that terrorism works. I.e. blow up a few bus loads of kids, behead a few infidels and you will give us what we want.

The Arab Beirut Summit Peace offer has been on the table since 2002; which until recently Israel has ignored. I wonder what took them so long to even acknowledge the offer?

I hear it my friend! There are many of us who will give our lives to resolve everything as I'm sure there are many on the other side. Just like the trenches of France and Belgium were filled with brothers slaughtering each others so is the Holyland and the streets of Jerusalem. The city of Shalom where the air is as clear as wine, the city of gold, and light, why oh why have your people forgotten what were you built for? Have the Romans won? Have they reduced our moral values to rubble? For my fallen uncle whom I'm named after, I pray for the day for it shall come! Where our battle ships will sail with apples to Africa and our guns will be cropped and our soldiers will come home. Our children deserve to concentrate on helping the enviroment and we can use every thinking brain around from here to Timbaktu! Have we learnt nothing from Johna?

I am a staunch critic of the State of Israel, but one cannot forget one's own people, one cannot ignore a feeling of warmth and love for one's brothers and sisters even if one is on the opposite side. During the last war, i prayed both of the hundreds of Lebanese men women and children who died so brutaliy and tragicly. But i also prayed for the souls of those young IDF boys who ultimatly never had a choice where they were going to be when they died. It is not the young, naive and firey IDF boys who are to blame for what happened in Lebanon, it is not the parents, for they are much like their children. It isnt religion or even land. It is Egotistic, greedy, corrupt leaders who love nothing more than a good conflict to continue their reign of sin. Weather Nasrallah in Beirut or Olmert in Jerusalem or Bush in DC or Blair in London. Shma Yisrael, HaShem Eloheinu, HaShem Echad One of the most beautiful and meaningful prayers, but no one in Israel hears it anymore. Shalom

Olmert, we are sick and tired of your "weighing" everything and doing nothing. You "weighed" the 2nd Lebanon War, and it brought us near disaster. What do you know about "weighing" for peace?! Apparently nothing.

Although far from you geographically, my heart, thoughts and prayers are with you all on the front line in defence of our homeland. From one who is far away,I extend my hear felt gratitude for your service and sacrifice in defence of our land. For those of you who have lost sons and daughters, I have no words except to say thankyou. May you all find strength in the knowledge that the sacrifice your loved ones have made, have been for the noblest of causes.

His painful concessions will lead to more Israeli dead. Israel needs Netanyahu in power.
