Olmert leaves for China for visit focusing on Iran nuclear plan
PM to express Israel's appreciation for Beijing support of UN sanctions; sources: Bilateral ties 'excellent.'
By Aluf BennPrime Minister Ehud Olmert departed for China on Monday evening on an official visit whose main purpose will be to further efforts to counter Iran's nuclear program.
During his meetings with China's President Hu Jintao and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, Olmert will express Israel's appreciation of Beijing's support for a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for sanctions against Iran.
Olmert will express Israel's view that while UN Resolution 1731 is an important step in blocking Iran's nuclear program, it is insufficient.
In an interview to a Chinese media outlet in preparation of his visit, Olmert said that Iran's development of nuclear weapons is contrary to Chinese interests, "and proof of that [realization] is the Security Council vote. We see eye to eye," on the issue.
China has sought a "balanced policy" on Iran's nuclear program, and prior to Olmert's visit hosted Ali Larijani, head of Iran's National Security Council and the leading figure in talks with the West on nuclear matters.
According to an official Chinese statement, President Hu told the visiting Iranian official that Tehran should "respond seriously" to the Security Council resolution, which called on Iran to cease enriching uranium or face sanctions.
Hu reiterated the Chinese position that the crisis with Iran must be resolved through "diplomatic means."
For his part, Larijani warned that Iran may develop a military nuclear program "if it is threatened."
"We believe the Chinese," political sources in Jerusalem said, "when they say they are opposed to a nuclear-armed Iran. But China has a traditional stance that opposes sanctions, and thus prefers a diplomatic solution."
In countering Iran, China opted to go along the route fashioned by Russia, in delaying and softening the sanctions, avoiding a leading role in international meetings on the issue.
China imports approximately 12 percent of its energy needs from Iran, and has close ties with Tehran.
This will be the fifth and final permanent member of the Security Council Olmert will visit in his international efforts to stem the development of the Iranian nuclear program.
The political sources in Jerusalem stress the economic and growing international importance of China and say that in spite of a number of crises, having to do with Israeli contracts to furnish Beijing with defense technologies - vetoed by the United States - bilateral relations remain "excellent."
In the past 18 months, high-level delegations from China visited Israel, in great part driven by interest in civilian technologies available here. Agriculture is a field in which Israeli scientists and entrepreneurs have met with great success in China, and Olmert is scheduled to pay a visit to a model farm set up by Israelis near Beijing.
The prime minister will also visit the Wall and the Forbidden City in the Chinese capital.
Olmert will announce that Israel plans to open a consulate in the province of Guangzhou, which is home to high-tech parks.
Chinese officials recently expressed their wish to double bilateral trade, currently standing at $3 billion, in four or five years.

I never said there would be an Israel-Saudi alliance. The wahabbi haters could never even shake a Jew's hand let alone plan an alliance. What I said was BUT for the deep anti-Semitism in Saudi society I could foresee a joint Israel-Saudi bombing of Iranian nuclear sites. Saudis hate the Iranians ( and vice versa) and will dance in the streets if Israel or the US hits their nuclear sites. It is not sure that China gave nuclear secrets to the North Koreans. The only nation which benefitted from Chinese expertise was Pakistan and that was due to the war was fought with India and why not nuclearize India's foremost enemy. I do not think the Chinese - or anyone for that matter - considered the craziness which has overcome the Islamic world since. France provided nuclear technology to Saddam and Russia is now helping Iran. China wants peace and China needs oil and lots of it. But any use of nuclear - even major conventional arms would destabilize oil for all - including China.
The Han people represent the vast majority of the Chinese people. Howver there are 55 other officially recognized ethnic groups who are considered Chinese. In areas where there is 'trouble' with the local ethnic group- as in Xin Jiang with Muslims - the Chinese move hundreds of thousands of ethnic Han Chinese to tip the population. The palestinians hope to do this with a flooding of Israel with people the UN claim are palestinian. Of course even the palestinians don't want them - as is the same for every Arab population in the world- none of which want palestinians as a part of their society. In China the minorities have no choice. Han come in and Han culture replaces th elocal one. That is true in Tibet as well. The replacement of one people with another has always been arafat's dream of an Arab destruction of Israel from within. He thinks like the Chinese but luckily for Israel, he's Arab.
is approaching; and it's going to be here much sooner the most people imagine. The fisrt step will be the phasing out of the internal combustion engine that relies on Gasoline- the seeds of this have already been planted. Also,Canada has the largest potential shale Oil reserves in the world and as they continueto tap this source (as they have started to do in recent years), the price will start to fall; the leverage of Iran and the Arab world will weaken; and because they've done nothing with their OIl wealth except buy military hardware, palaces, illicit booze "chairs" in Middle East studies, and baubles for the rich; they are in for a shock
Bimmer, you are counting on a lot of alliances that won't pan out, including in Saudi. Why do you think the Kings over there are kicking Bush's shins---cause they know their views are markedly different than their Muslim populations, most notably Pakistan. I agree with poster who advised you to check on Chinese views on Israel problem--they don't at all comport to yours; re NKorea, if China WANTED NKorea not to have a nuke, she would not have had one. China allowed and realistically helped NKorea get one cause they know the US and NKorea is a thorn in the US side. Neither the US/Israel, especially now, enjoys the support of world opinion, esp after Iraq and vetoing every UN res on Israel. Better get a grip; it's not gonna go the way you think I don't believe and in the end the US will force Israel to give it up--can't stand the heat!! What about it?
All 13 million of us note with envy that the noble Hannah has conferred Peoplehood, upon the Chinese. It's us aliens he's obsessed with though, poor thing. Genuine hutzpa's irresistibly addictive, isn't it?
Aw, come on Bimmer, stop the BS and spin. Doesn't matter how you spin it, the Pals are there and were there when you came; pointing to who was there thousands of years ago is not swaying world opinion towards Israel; this is the here and now; if we go down that biblical path, the world maps will be redrawn. There is no world sympathy for Israel/Pal situation, especially when you look at the world vote on the issue as opposed to UNSC, where Israel counts on a steady UN veto. The Pals will have a state and soon, regardless of all these excuses this and that--seems like Olmert, Bush and Livni are moving in that direction cause we are stuck in ME and the problem is a stick in Bush's craw right now to get help and not flack. Get used to it.
"Genocidal Zionists?" The only ones advocating genocide in the Mid-East are Hamas, Hazbollah, and Iran.
Read your post; no problem with killing the terrorists in China, nosirree; but that is mixing apples and oranges cause the Israel/Pal problem has to do with defining who terrorists are. Chinese are not stupid people, nosirree, and they clearly understand Israel's definition of the Pals as terrorists for daring to want back their land. In addition to that, I read that China has dropped off of the US dollar en masse preferring to go with the euro. US may be biggest trading partner now, but so is the biggest debt to China; we are buying on credit--looks like if we stay bogged down in Iraq/Afghanistan et al, we will stumble on the interest payment, which now means just printing money. Don't kid yourself, regardless of what is going on in China where they are keeping a clampdown on their people, I wouldn't count on them getting too close ideology wise with the West, no sirree, and regardless of what they do to their people, US just pays lip service cause US up to arse in debt to china.
"As for Iranian oil its becoming an unreliable source..within 5 years Iranian output will be down 50 percent" Now there we have someone at least who CORROBORATES the Iranian claim that they need nuclear power plants for their energy supply.
Hey Clickfool, It seems that Israel and China have more in common than you think, though china seem to be more efficient in dealing with their terrorist problem. Seems like muslim terror is spreading everywhere, from russia to China. As for Iranian oil its becoming an unreliable source..within 5 years Iranian output will be down 50 percent and the already dismal Iranian economy will be in tatters. China is only tolerating Iran because of oil and as the left keep reminding the USA things can get messy when you buy favours with oil. When Iran becomes an unreliable source, too hot (in terms of pssing off Chinas main trading partner the US) or when new technology comes into being, Iran wont have a friend in the world. Poor Iran is buying its friends because at the end of the day Iran is Johnny Nofriends. Irans only true friends are the KKK and the NeoNazis. Quite appropriate really.
Bascially you're correct. Except for North Korea. That is of concern to China due to a common border. China will do much more to prevent a mishap in North Korea than they will in the Middle East. However, they should realize that a ,G-d forbide, nuclear war in the Middle East will do more to destabilize oil than anything else. A nuclear iran could push the situation over and China's growth could be affected. And Saudi Arabia is of course closer to the US than China. If the Sudanese govenment massacres another one million more Darfurians, China couldn't care less as long as they get the oil. China does not concern itself with problems beyond their borders and that includes even anti-Chinese acts like the slaughter & rape of ethnic Chinese in Indonesia just a few years ago. Still, not only Israel can learn from the Chinese. As terrorism is mosque driven and if the West monitored the mosques in their countries at 30% what they Chinese do there may not have been a 9/11.
"In a few decades the Muslim population will be a very distict minority and essentially, case closed. No more Muslim problem." I bet you view this with distinct envy. Still doesn't help you with your own aspirations.
"Until 1948 a palestinian was considered a Jew not an Arab." Correct is, until 1948 there was mandated Palestine, its inhabitants therefore called Palestinians, were both Jews and Arabs. Your construct that there were only jewish Palestinians denies reality. Or for what reason did the UN propose a divison of Palestine between Jews and Arabs if there were no palestinian Arabs at all? "Now aside from Jews, try to name one palestinian of note until the 20th century." Why should I (or anyone else)? Can YOU name an East Timorean or a Botswanian or whoever of note until the 20th century? The right of national self-determination goes without a quorum of VIPs or nobel laureates. (Many of which you Jews boast of did not regard themselves foremost as Jews, but as French, German etc. citizens)
All Israel's talk about whacking Iran based on words are not lost on anybody but Israel and the US; and I don't believe the US is gonna whack Iran. Everybody knows about paranoid Israel and her history in the area and like Gates told our Congress; Israel has nukes and now Iran wants (needs) nukes. Don't delude yourself into thinking your own paranoia transfers to the rest of the world, it does not.
Well, I read all the posts including yours and seems like the posters today are in the real world, yessiree, about China. As for Israel and China, I dunno. They may respect old, but they respect oil more and some world stability--they basically opposed the UN sanctions on Iran; and I do believe they've looked at Israel, including the sh-it US gave that you sold and spun it as an upgrade, is foremost in their mind. They don't want the baggage that Israel's problems have created; they are humming right along making deals with despots all over the world. No, I don't believe Olmert will be able to sell the Confucious saying Chinese on the Israeli brand of BS--China owns the US; we borrow from them to pay our war debts and what not. The US has nothing to say to China cause all she needs to respond is "pay us". Given China's size and power, there will be no talk of whacking her if she balks, no sirree, there won't. China doesn't care whether Iran has a nuke or not, just like NKorea.
China follows a pro-Muslim line - outside of China. Of course inside they take a very different approach. Just today, the news is of a Chinese raid on a pro-Ungar Muslim group killing 18 of them and capturing 17 more. A mullah who wishes to conduct services in a mosque in Xin-Jiang must pass Communist Party Certification. He is restricted in what he can and cannot say. Any deviation is cause for his removal from ther mosque and of course possibly removal period. Islam is kept under very close watch in China and the slightest hint of radical talk is met with arrest and detention. Of course the Chinese have one tool which no one else has- people. The Muslim section of China- Xin Jiang is slowly being transformed into a Han ethnic Chinese area just as Tibet is. In a few decades the Muslim population will be a very distict minority and essentially, case closed. No more Muslim problem.
You have a lot of reading to do. Israel was a nation before Christ's birth and centuries before the warlord mohammed inspired his jihads in the 8th century AD. When Israel was a forgotten and barren land 19th century Zionists were forced to reclaim it by purchasing it back from Ottoman overlords. The Ottoman's held the land for almost 700 years and it was in Islamic hands for another 300 hundred. Yet during this whole period Jerusalem was never the capital of any Islamic entity. It was a backwater city - except for the Jews who remained there in the majority despite that being 'illegal'. Israel was under occupation by foreigners for 2,000 years. Now, most of it is liberated and back to the original owners. Until 1948 a palestinian was considered a Jew not an Arab. Now aside from Jews, try to name one palestinian of note until the 20th century. A writer, a King, a rich or poor man. Don't brother you little brain. There were none. Your 'palestinian people' is historically a bogus group
"For instance is Taiwan less a part of China than Judea & Samaria is a part of Israel?" You suggest Israel sucks up to the Chinese by ridiculous analogies on territorial aspirations? You better research how China's position has been on UNSC and GA resolutions about the Palestinian problem. That should shatter your illusions about a Tel Aviv - Beijing axis built on territorial claims.
The Chinese people are a People. It is very much more questionable when it comes to Jews, what with all your conversions, etc. The Chinese people have a land, their own land, called China, while the zionist jews have merely stolen Palestinian lands which they currently squat upon. Are you trying to make me laugh by comparing the two?
Cite your sources, please. Otherwise, your statements are just more of the usual zionist clap-trap.
Lrijani's statement "Iran may develop a military nuclear program 'if it is threatened'" anticipates the excuse Iran will argue once it's nuclear weapons come out of the closet. All the assurances of "peaceful purposes" Iran has maintained so far, will be erased in a glimpse under the "feeling threatened, had no alternative" excuse. Larijani has indeed anticipated us the plot. Stop Iran now.
Chinese, or the 'Jews of the East' are a growing international power and Israel should court them. Whether they help with Iran is questionable but the effort must be made. Additionally, Israel could learn some basic lessons from the Chinese. For instance is Taiwan less a part of China than Judea & Samaria is a part of Israel? The Chinese never negotiate any land which is intrinsically Chinese. Israel on the other hand is willing to give away her ancestral land in a blink of the eye for worthless promises. The Chinese should be reminded that Judea & Samaria has been part of Israel dating back past the Qin Dynasty. China respects 'old'. No one has an older claim to land than the Chinese and Jewish attachment to their respective lands. But only the Chinese continue to respect those claims.
Any leader that leaves his country while it is under rockect attack is terrible. Will China stop the rockect attacks?
....for himself and his buddies. China, Iran's huge oil importer, will do what the ayatollahs want. In this case they told the Chinese to throw the Corrupt Traitor some business to keep him quiet.
PERHAPS HE WANTS TO KNOW HOW THE CHINESE KEEP THEIR WORKERS AND MINISTERS IN ORDER !!
Israel has no oil. Therefore China may listen politely to Israel. But they will always choose access to Iranian oil first. Which is entirely China's right.
PM Olmert is claiming that his Beijing trip is in consequent of many Chinese visitors, inquiries, information searches about Israel. His officially declared trip reason is, ?Iran's development of nuclear weapons is contrary to Chinese interests, and ?.. ?proof of that [realization] is the Security Council vote.? We see eye to eye. The official program includes two really top meetings with Chinese heads of government, a visit to the Israel?s errected model farm, a visit of the famous wall with its thousands of Terrakot soldiers, a visit of the forbidden city in Beijing and official signing i.e establishment of an Israel Consulate in Guangzhou province, with its center of Chinese high tech. Accepting Chinese interest in Israel?s development, having a reporting embassy here Olmert?s weak position as latest pool even within his Kadima Party is less than 25 % when Kadima?s Foreign Ministress which occomulated over 60% party follwers. - Why didn?t she lead this official mission occumalating in widening of mutual deplomatic relations
for hundreds of years fruitcakes have been wearing boards around thier bodies walking the streets claiming "THE END IS NIGH" You seem so like them!
Olmert knows that the chinese as well as the russians are no way going to allow the USA and its rottwieller Israel to control the worlds oil supply. Israel can't bully China so it resorts to what all bullies do when they are too scared SUCK UP! Israel is soooo macho against unarmed people like the lebanese civillians it slaughtered.
As long as he keeps his mouth shut!
Asia Times BANGALORE - Israel's relationship with its closest ally, the United States, seems to have hit a rough patch, with Washington apparently upset with Israel's clandestine dealings with China. The spat is not new, however. It has its roots in a decade-old issue. Old suspicions have returned. It is an explosion into the public domain of a row that has been going on for a few years. The quarrel is over Israel's alleged concealing from Washington of an upgrade of a major weapons system it sold to China more than a decade ago. The United States claims that by upgrading the system, Israel violated its commitment not to transfer US technology to China without Washington's permission. Israel, however, insists that the upgrade was really just routine maintenance of a system that had originally been sold to China with US approval. http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/FL21Ak01.html
to sell the arms he could not drop on Palestine and Lebanon to China.
More grandious bragging...who cares about the evil and nasty tiny state of so-called Israel? No one but vert snall community of zionist tribal cult members. How many are you in the world, percentage-wise? Do you not think that it's about time for you to lose you blah-blah tribal hutzpah and attempt, in an extremely humble way, to rejoin the human race? It will indeed be difficult for you in your new diaspora, because there are many who have witnessed your genocidal intentions and deeds in the period where you stupidly thought that you had power, and those witnesses will neither forgive nor forget you. However, Hitler's murderers found respite in South America. Perhaps you zionists will be so funtunate as to find such a haven for yourselves. However, I would say to all you misguided devils' advocates: Perhaps you should try to protect your innocent children sooner rather than later.
I do believe that you have seen the writing on the wall, Marco. Of course, what would the USofA want with a cranky lilluputian state of grandious poseurs, unless it fell within their own ideas of a grand and glorious theft of ME oil and gas? If the USofA loses in their current adventure in Afghanistan, Iraq and, soon, Iran, Israel will be of no more use to them. Have you not wondered where you shekels come from? Have you not yet understood that so-called Israel is but a pawn in the game?
All intelligence indicates that Iran is not developing nuclear weapons. This includes the CIA as well as the NPT inspectors. It's the Iraq war rationale all over again. The best way for Israel to achieve peace for its children is to do just that: make peace with the Palestinians. Nuking Iran sets back peace and endangers Israel. If Israel decides otherwise, it will face a worldwide economic and travel boycott. Not good for Israel's children at all.
I am not sure if you are from beautiful Brighton or Hove. There is no doubt that every country cares about her interest first, even US who pretends to be a good ally of Israel, same story. Just using Israel for her oid need in ME.
but never again
You surely jest. Not even an American president during the cold war would have launched all the missles after a devastating first strike by the Soviet Union. No one wants to be remembered as murdering 200 million, and few could do it. In such scenario, an American president would only have ordered strikes on government and military targets. No blockbuster attacks on civilians. Of course, things might be different nowadays with the nitwit Bush in charge.
Oh, yeah, right: Olmert is going to congratulate the Chinese leaders, as though he were big and they were small. Please all zionists, measure your might against the might of the Chinese government and people. And, while you're at it, perhaps meditate for a small moment on the fact that the Chinese own the massive debt of the USofA, lock, stock and barrel. And exactly how do you folks support yourself? Right, by shamelessly begging in the same in-hock USofA. Do you really think, looking at China's investments in both Iran (wherein they need gas and oil) and in the USofA (wherein they have bought up the entire economy) that they somehow or another will be on your silly side in a confrontation with Iran? Olmert is taking his Judas kisses to exactly the wrong place. However, beggers can't be choosers.
This world should understand that Israel's destruction is the end of the world. Israel should make things clear to the whole world: If threatened it will nuke all enemies and revenge the holocaust, or better said will nuke Germany, it will be the end of Europe as well.
China cares about China. It is engaged in a very long-term plan to build up its economic and military muscle. The prupose of this is to regain Taiwan. That's all you need to know. It needs large amounts of oil to do this. Iran has large amounts of oil and China will do nothing to disturb its relationship with this country. China doesn't give a tuppenny toss about Israel, other than to occasionally try to buy exotic military kit that venal Israeli companies offer it in contravention of agreements with America, Israel's alleged best friend.
The way to go forward is to make peace with Iran; Iran needs the clean source of energy for its growing population. The technology and science is already their. Only a constructive dialogue will keep nuclear program peaceful and under the watchful eye of the IAEA, The hidden agenda from the west is to deprive Iran from advanced technology, this is very much known by the Iranians. The concern is that a new leadership in Iran may divert this program to military use if felt threatened.
Whenever the going gets rough here, Olmert gets going -- somewhere else. Where does the money come from for all of his trips? Airfare isn't cheap and if he takes his wife along, the hotel fees are even higher. In the meantime we have the tax mess, Gaza, Hamas, crime like Sicily and, and, and, many people here don't have money to buy their basics, such as medicines, food and housing. Olmert might just make a terrific Travel Agent -- somewhere else. Bon Voyage -- to our traveling 'salesman'.
Those yellow skinned, slant eyed Chinese aren't gonna listen to Olmert. Israel is amazing! They think people forget everything they do or say. "Israel and Australia are like sisters in Asia," Tamir said in an interview with Haaretz during a visit to Israel this week. "We are in Asia without the characteristics of Asians. We don't have yellow skin and slanted eyes. Asia is basically the yellow race. Australia and Israel are not - we are basically the white race. We are on the western side of Asia and they are on the southeastern side." http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/774471.html
Chinese nuclear scientists have been assisting Iran's program since the early '80's and significant deals for Iranian natural resources have been signed since then to fuel China's rapid growth. But these same "infidel" foreign scientists will be sent packing once Iran achieves self-sufficiency. China (along with Russia) will not easily be swayed to significantly increase pressure on Tehran at this time because business in Iran is too good for both these major Security Council members currently. So it looks like they'll be polite and listen to Israel's impassioned plea but in the end the Chinese will play for time and only offer token support with suggestions for further dialogue to calm things down. And that is exactly the outcome Iran desires! China won't start feeling the same heat until perhaps Iran starts reaching out to bless all Muslims worldwide (including China's 20 million) with their newly acquired nuclear tech knowhow and their exclusive religious beliefs.
Based on the recent performance of the Israeli gov't, my guess is that while Olmert is in China, one of his ministers (the nitwits) will say something disparaging about the Chinese; also the IDF, in a botched raid, will accidently shoot a Chinese journalist; Haaretz will have an article about maltreatment of illegal Chinese immigrants, and Olmert will agree to trade away some hi tech Israeli intellectual property in exchange for reduced rent on a apt in Shanghai.
