Olmert announces intention to seek 2nd term as Kadima party head
Despite 2nd Lebanon War criticism, PM says hopes will stand as candidate for premiership in next elections.
By Haaretz StaffPrime Minister Ehud Olmert announced Friday his intention to seek a second term as the leader of the Kadima party and run as its candidate for the position of prime minister in the next general elections.
During an address to Kibbutz Movement leaders at Kibbutz Yifat, Olmert reiterated he would not step down despite criticism by State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss of his handling of the Second Lebanon War last summer.
Olmert's announcement verified speculation he would run against political rivals within his party, ministers Tzipi Livni, Meir Sheetrit and Shaul Mofaz, also expected to take part in the race.
On the situation in the Gaza Strip, the prime minister said he could not promise the situation along the border with the southern Palestinian territory will not become similar to the status quo that existed along the northern border prior to the outbreak of the Second Lebanon War, Israel Radio reported.
Nonetheless, Olmert said he is convinced that Israel should not launch a major ground assault in Gaza, nor should it reoccupy the Strip, the report stated.
A senior Israel Defense Forces source said Thursday that the army is very concerned about Hamas' growing strength in the Gaza Strip, but not enough to lead it to ask for permission to carry out a large-scale military operation there.
The prime minister expressed reservations regarding a High Court of Justice decision obligating the state to reinforce schools in the Gaza area by the beginning of the next school year, in order to help protect them against Qassam rocket fire. "The court will not decide where to reinforce and when to reinforce," he said.
According to the radio, Olmert also called on Syrian President Bashar Assad to begin direct peace negotiations without American mediation.
The prime minister called on Assad to drop his demand that Israel agree to withdraw from the Golan Heights as a precondition to talks, saying the Syrian president's demand for an Israeli withdrawal to the pre-1967 lines is a precondition that Israel cannot accept.
On Thursday, President Shimon Peres called for direct negotiations with Syria if its stated desire for peace talks is genuine.
The prime minister also referred to the convergence plan - a proposed unilateral withdrawal from much of the West Bank, on which he based his 2006 election campaign - saying that at this stage, neither unilateral steps nor the evacuation of settlements are on the agenda.
"In the long run, everyone understands that Israel cannot exist if the Jewish majority is not ensured;" he said. "For this reason we will have to make difficult decisions."
According to the radio, Olmert stressed that the current diplomatic focus is on reaching a negotiated agreement with the Palestinian Authority that is acceptable to both sides.
The prime minister added that he has no intention of resigning over the state comptrollers investigations into him or the criticism of his handling of the Second Lebanon War, saying he intends to be Kadima's candidate for prime minister in the next elections.

So Olmert intends seeking 2nd term as Kadima Party Leader. Olmert has made sure he has his cronies in place, whether they can do their job or not, so that they will be there to help him in his next Election bid. But they won't succeed because the people are already crying out for Bibi and want to see the last of Olmert.
We are afraid to hear the Intention of Mr. Olmert. The strong man in Israel ist still unknowen. All the news from backtime is not making everone happy. Mr. Olmert should stopp to talk aboud turning back the south God have given the Land to Israel and nowbody have the autority to give it back to other parties or nationen. May Netanjahu is the man the heasd Israel as a Ministerpresident of Israel.
themselves, especially Livni will try overrun her own shadowy performance and Mofaz as a minister failure , and a past defence portfolio failure, will use his position in transport to enable usage of trains and trucks to run quicker and faster . While the rest of the Olmerts monkeys will gather in local zoo , and fed bananas , much the same way Olmert fed bananas to all Israeli citizens . We hope they all get re elected to be the so unloyal members of the opposition.
BS'D THE STATEMENT REPORTEDLY MADE BY OLMERT: 'THE SUPREME COURT WILL NOT DECIDE WHEN AND WHERE TO REINFOCE SCHOOLS AGAINST KASSAM ROCKETS'....SHOWS HIS UTTER CONTEMPT FOR THE LAW IN ISRAEL!!! WHY ISN'T HE BEING PROSECUTED FOR DEFYING THIS SUPREME COURT DECISION?
Instead of doing the best thing possible for Israel and leaving the government and taking Peres,Peretz,Livni and the rest of the group with him...he wants to continue on.Does he read the newspaper...does he listen to the radio...does he know that he is despised and unwanted. What can one say..he is either delusional or is unable to grasp the concept that he is unqualified for the any position in Israel and that goes for garbage collector. At this very sensitive time he is the last person we need to have the role of Prime Minister...strong leadership is needed now..not a whimpy man who is connected to the far left and has a wife who flies the banner for Shalom Achav.People of Israel...please let go of him before he destroys this wonderful country.
This man has no shame, no conscience, no class, if an election was up for biggest fool he would win. This is why Olmert won't resign he honestly thinks he is wanted and doing a good job. It would almost be funny except the stakes are so high and this shows just how delusinal Olmert really is and it says Israel has a head case in charge. This alone shows Olmerts vision of grandeur thats going on in his head. Anyone with his -2% approval rating and he says hes going to run for reelection needs to be locked up in a loony bin as fast as possible.
Yes,no doubt Olmert running for a second term is it! If we have a contest for who in Israel has the least shame he too will be in it.
Nachum-takum...... how "jolly" !
Kadima policies blunders of disengagement of divisiveness , of arabisation of Israel , of mutilation of Israel borders and Capital are the valid reasons that Kadima with Olmert at its head must not be reelected , Israel Nation would certainly feel better should a Gov't made by settlers be elected , settlers from the forcefully transferred jews from Gush Katif and Homesh , Judea , Samaria , Hebron and Golan , such a Gov't would certainly heed the expert scholars authoritative recommendations of our Winograde Judges interim report conclusion , would certainly send a strong signal that withdrawal policies are rejected , that arabs transfer policies are on the agenda and should be promoted as the permanent fashion of the day policy , it certainly would end arabs occupation of jewish Homeland , too much evil has been taken against jewish settlers , they've earned legitimacy to Govern the Jewish State of Israel , Imagine the feel of Meretz Beilin , peace Now ect...
Olmert, go ahead! You have 2% of the voters! Let's hope it won't be sufficient for you to continue on your way to destroy your party, to destroy Israel, all for your personal glory!
Another reason to prove olmert is sick and idiot.no body want him sooner he goes better off we are.
"lmert - Would You Buy a Used Car from Him ?" - Tod Zuckerman I wouldn't even buy a new war from him. There is more than just a possibility. There is a probability, that Israel will be making a purchase from Ehud Motors and Wars soon.
As PM is one of his first duty to ensure the safety of his population,if Hamas really want fight just give them a lesson. We must says stop on Qassam rains.moreover we have to star also to fight the one so called "Humanitarian organizations" Pro Arabs which are aways ready to blame Israel for self defense. I want see them with the Vatican state under treat as Israel is.
That's great-I love hope easily it is for big "o" to make these observations re: the strip becoming like the north. Why doesn't "o" live in Sderot-it would show solidarity with those that have to live in terror for their lives. Nooo, "o" is special, a politician, and an inept one at that. If I were living in Sderot I'd burn the knesset down if that's what it took to get something done to protect me and my family.
is without doubt influenced by Meretz Beilin political line of thought , both Olmert and Beilin rather manipulate IDF warnings and exploit them for short term political gain at the expense of long term political blunders , i.e mainly the increase of the soldiers lives cost thru the military dangers hoovering against Israel by manipulating David Shield warnings and transforming , converting those warnings into very short term useless political gain , Olmert , Beilin , Peres , Livni ect,,,and some high ranking IDF members are clearly influenced by pan arabs statements and misleaded thus by their caliphated way of thinking , the political blunders inherited and adopted by Kadima vis a vis quassams rockets is but a flagrant , blatant example of lost of deterrence , let alone Kadima weak policies seen as opportunities by enemies to mount kidnapping operations , This Kadima thinking line is also based on rolling over problems to the next administration , complicating thus the solution , same as arabs way of thinking by throwing their internal problems at Israel's doorsteps , instead of taking responsibility , this Kadima arabised way of line thinking clearly expose a lack of good governance , more like small time punch of individual adventurists holding hands to each other by making sure their seats are well nailed to the parliament floor ,
but than , North of the country to resemple , is too easy , if Olmert continues with such pragmatism , North Jerusalem , with North TEl Aviv , will resemple Shderot , which resemples according to him North of Israel , which in turns resembles total anarchy, impotence , and defeatism . Olmert and his degenerates, should soon resemble all those governments before them, hope very soon.
Military strategy should be left to the military experts such as the Generals. It is inappropriate for politicians to undermine the Generals from doing their work properly to achieve victory within the shortest time possible.
israel thinks it can have it's way forever, nothing is forever, thanks to the war mongering previous leaders that did NOT see that peace is an option, are now going to doom israels existence, america is a lone country, israel is surrounded on all sides, america doesn't care if israel gets beat, it can find another country there, and all the while israel has been fighting for it's existence since the time it was allocated land there, tisk tisk tisk. the arabs are coming and not like previously, there are more dangerous today than ever, good luck. if your blind or to patriotic to see this, then your as stupid as you are.
Olmert and Livni have no answer to the 18.000 missiles they helped Hizbullah to reinstall in Lebanon. They have no answer for the flow of high-teach arms into Gaza they made possible by leaving the Philadelphi Road. And they have absolutely no idea how to stop Iran from committing a new Holocaust. The only idea they have is to run away from the Land of Israel and Jerusalem, in the foolish hope that this would help. A few days ago, Haaretz published that 19 families hold one third of the Israeli economy in their hands. They control also the leftist media and are those who are backing the Olmert government, which is not trusted by the Israeli people. Those who are backing Olmert and Livni might very well be those who are digging the grave for Israel.
Now be fair! Give old Dutch her 'shameful', she needs it, poor old decrepit thing.
There we go. Bye bye Golan, Jerusalem and maybe the Jewish State too. All our strugle for nothing. This is something even an Ole Hadash knew when he arrived in Israel.
GZLives is actually correct with is translation. It is you who need to go back to the books. Dare I suggest that you read that entire chapter of Proverbs. Which by the way is no Zionistic in any way shape or form indeed neither is the Torah.
Olmert is a real disgrace to every self-respecting Jew. He is a weak, corrupt and egotistical - as for intelligence, admittedly he has a canny sense of how to save his own butt politically and criminally (at least so far) , but has exemplified a blatant stupidity regarding the affairs of state. It is actually painful for me to look at the SOB.
it is your last chance before you no longer have a hold on a holly land of moslem or national land for arab enjoy whatever left of your life span becuase it is 3 minutes to midnight mideastern time zone
No doubt you are able to find spiteful references in the Torah; however, the reference you have found is incorrect. Back to the books!
"I would doubt that either party can deliver, the only way Assad can come out of this with his skin is to make war on ISrael, using any excuse or pretense." - .33 Gunz Don't be silly. Assad is suing for peace because that is his best defense. "Israel on the other hand may very well take more than Golan, and this time annex the entire mess." - .125 gunz After the Second Lebanon War fiasco the world is in no mood for Israel to wage a war of naked agression. "ran is the spoiler who stokes the flames of war . . . " - .00001 gunz Have you taken your meds? Iran is trying to fill an inside straight just to survive. The Ayatollahs would like to consolidate an arc of control through Iraq and Iran. They have dreams of extending it into Lebanon. They would love for a miracle to happen and for the first time in well over a thousand years Shiite Islam would overrule Sunni Islam. Thanks to George Bush Iran has, and will continue to have, a pro-Iran government in Iraq. That is where it ends.
David you are god themn RIGHT. he will destroy the country if he stay in the office.you sooooooooo RIGHT.
"Cannot promise that the situation along the Strip will not become similar to the reality along the northern border"....Good going, Ehud. Very reasuring statement for your fellow countrymen after the trama of last summer's war. That sure ranks up there, along his other famous self-defeatist phrases "We are tired of winning. We are tired of defeating our enemies.". I just have a feeling that after he is thrown out of office (or destruction of the country) he will join Avram Burg in France.
Say what you will abot Assad, but he is for CERtAIN, the "first prize" winner in ANY ugly contest. He REALLY got beat with the "ugly stick"!
There never will be peace in Israel. NEVER!
Yeah, these two guys seem to hit it off really good together! Maybe we'll see a look-alike contest featuring Clickfool & Hanniyeh!! But seriously: is Olmert really considering direct talks with the eye surgeon? This is more rediculous than Lord Cashpoint getting away with the cash-for-honors scandal in England (check yet another great photo on BBC website). The story remains the same: Joe Public in most of the civilised World just wants to get on with it - meanwhile, several persons with delusions of grandeur (Assad, Achmedinajad, Kim Jong Il, Mugabe, etc.), want to mess it all up for the rest of us. PS: any chance of Haaretz getting rid of Clickfool et al?? It gets sooooooo tiresome.....
Is exactly arabs intent when pals say that they support the 2002 Saudia machination , this arabs machination has gained currency , is promoted by Meretz Beilin , peace now ect...is perceived by kadima as a solution acceptable, manipulated machination as qur'an verses is daily dosed , forged into Israel public opinion moreover when disguised with a 2003 US Road Map touch , the arabs web of lies fabricated against Israel definitely got momemntum , fashion and legs, the increased pressure from the differents botcotts are example , By now , Kadima actions , statements indicate and proves with no whatsoever doubt that Kadima is at the service of hostile pan arab street agenda , Kadima zealously pursuit the monumental deceit of Oslo accords , the relief of arabs extortion , the mutilation of Israel borders and Capital , let alone that the arabs opposition to zionism thru arabs occupation of Israel has contaminated Zion spirit and gradually led to the arabisation of Israel ,
Shouldn't Lebanon be screaming for direct peace talk swith Syria. Syria is doing everything it can to destabilize another Arab country -Lebanon. So what is the future? "Peace" with Israel, and Lebanon in turmoil?? Syria should be forced to recognize Israel and Lebanon officially. Thus, before giving any land up to Syria, Israel should offer the Shaba farms to Lebanon for peace instead of handing over this bargaining chip to Syria. Dual Lebanese and Syrian peace will definitely be a blow to Iran and Hezbullah.
What's shameful Hannah is your lying "By way of deception thou shalt make war" (Proverbs 24,6 - that's how it sounds in modern Hebrew, but the actual meaning of the words is in doubt. The English Bible renders it thus: "For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war".)
well you are someone that nobody here needs to read. The standard idiotic fare, zionist this zionist that. Save it for Al Jazeera-Qaeda! Assad is a snake and everyone knows it.
I would doubt that either party can deliver, the only way Assad can come out of this with his skin is to make war on ISrael, using any excuse or pretense. Israel on the other hand may very well take more than Golan, and this time annex the entire mess. Iran is the spoiler who stokes the flames of war as it pours gasoline over the embers of mistrust (wow sounds philosophical doesnt it) Can Olmert deliver peace. NO. can Olmert make war... Not effectively because he is too weak and does not trust his generals. He thinks he knows better. Its a lose lose al;l the way around for Syria and ISrael
First off hannah. if you want peace, you must prepare for war. Syria has in the past aided other arab states in trying to destroy ISrael, so their is historical proof to trust but verify. Israel can offer the Olice branch, but the other hand should be a mailed fist just in case. Know your enemy and know yourself and you will always triumph over your enemies.
Olmert is very weak right now, far weaker than Assad, who is not the dictator his father was. Is Olmert in a position to actually make a deal? Can he keep the extreme right in line? Can he stand up to them? Does he want to? Assad clearly knows that the Syrian armed forces have been deteriorating for decades and are incapable of taking on the IDF. Both sides would have to end up with the Golan demilitarized. Both sides will need normalized diplomatic relations and full recognition. Assad clearly needs to recover the Golan. Olmert will need an end to support for Hizbollah and Hamas. Can either deliver?
tell olmert if before he destroy isral, would be election no body want him.kadima is missing sharon. go learn from him.
Do I understand this situation correctly? Olmert & Co. are currently planning their upcoming military attack on Syria, and meanwhile they continue to send out these deceptive messages? It is merely more of the usual and typical double-talk (aka lies) from the zionists, who rigorously practise the Mossad motto of "By way of deception, thou shalt do war." Shameful.
I think Olmert might actually have figured out that negotiating with Assad NOW while Bush isn't butting in and pressuring Israel is the best option. Right now Assad has pressure on him to negotiate because of: 1) Iraq war 2) Hariri trial 3) Lebanon unrest between Hezb/Siniora 4) US threat to hit Iran nuke sites Without the Bush pushing Israel, Israel can negotiate free of any pressure. But Bush won't be in office forever. Some future US President will decide to pressure Israel into talks. And the Hariri trial will end eventually. The US will withdraw from Iraq someday. There is even a chance that there could be a break-through in Lebanon's politics, and with Iran's nuke program. Where would that leave Israel and Syria? Israel will be the ones under pressure to negotiate, Syria will be the ones in the better negotiating position. The time is now. Launch a Peace Offensive against Syria before Bush leaves office. Close the deal on Israel's terms.
you peopel in haaretz do not give up do you. you will destroy isral one day, and then you have no choice by die with it or scape to another country. STOP THIS MADNESS.you damn all
Assad wants to know how you.Olmert is such a idiot. Why would this Jack Ass tell Assad anything like that. There is something wrong with this man besides having no balls. Olmert first rule as PM you never tell your enemy what your thinking. like the old saying a fish never gets caught till it opens its mouth. once again Olmert has shown his stupidity. Last time its was saying what all knew but never said regarding Nuclear weapons in Israels control. Now he promises Assad. Olmert you are pathic you keep making promises to Assad and he sits their and doesnt offer anything to Israel so what do you do you offer more. Olmert you are PM of the strongest country in the middle east you either make deals from the position of strenght or resign which is what you need to do. The truth is Olmerts in over his head.
someone who could do it prevent the repeat of the situation in the north along the Gaza
Iran is running out of gas, literally!!! They have oil and oil money but they need a lot from the outside world. That is why they have to be careful. They also know that the West is weak, and every country has its own agenda and would sell each other up the river in a blink of the eye, allies or not. The U.K. has already kissed Ahmanutjobs butt for returning their marines. So there is something that will be repaid later on. Tony Blair left that surprise for his successor Gordon Brown. Assad knows that Israel and peace will bring him more than what he will ever get from Iran. However concrete results need to start showing up. IF moderates really want to upstage the radicals they need to show the masses that peace can come and there will be no more empty promises on either side.
