Obama to tell Rabin memorial: U.S.-Israel alliance is unbreakable

In video to be shown on Sat. night, Obama will also say U.S. won't give up on goal of just Mideast peace.

The alliance between Israel and the United States is unbreakable, U.S. President Barack Obama will tell Israelis at a memorial ceremony for former prime minister Yitzhak Rabin on Saturday night.

Obama will make the comments in a videotaped message in which he also will pledge that U.S. support for Israel's defense will never be undermined.

The video is another step in the U.S. leader's attempt to speak directly to the Israeli public in light of the very low level of support he has among Israelis.

Obama will also tell Israelis that the U.S. will never give up on its joint goal with Israel to reach a just peace and coexistence between Israel, the Palestinians and the Arab world.

He will also mention the legacy left by Rabin, who was assassinated in 1995 by a Jewish extremist.

Several polls over the past few months show the American president has won the support of only 6 percent to 10 percent of the Israeli public, with people saying Obama does not support Israel.

Obama's advisers are worried about his lack of popularity and the expressed feeling that he is hostile to Israel. They believe this seriously harms his ability to advance the peace process with the Palestinians. Obama's advisers see this as the reason why Israelis view his diplomatic initiatives on both Iran and the Palestinians so negatively.

Obama will address Israelis in a video message on Sat.

There is really no "alliance" as such

The U.S. merely does Israel's bidding. That's not an "alliance." I would call it more of an 'indenture' i.e. a kind of contract binding the U.S. to the service of Israel. Who needs such alliances?

People are sick of this alliance today.

I see Obama as a kind of "make-believe" President. Rather void of any core values that I can discern and ready to switch an opinion 180 degrees in a flash. He did this in Israel on his "raise my Foreign Affairs Image Tour." First told the Israelis that Jerusalem was "undividable." A day or two later? To the PA: "The final status of Jerusalem must be decided in final negotiations." Made me naseous since this was the most overworn phrase used by countless others before him for many, many years. He has ZERO loyalty to Israel and is terrified of using Executive power. Good luck with Ahmadinejad, Barack. He has no backbone and is essentially a rudderless politician with two major talents: Rhetoric and looking "Presidential." Israelis are rightly alienated and mistrustful of him.

Obama can pick Rabin's Jahrzeit to give one of his lofty speeches about peace. But that will not change his abysmal standing among Israelis. What could help, if Obama is really interested in it, is he climbs down from his naiveté and understands the following: Just as Hitler's "Jewish problem" wasn't a problem of the Jews, but Hitler's, Muslims' "Israeli problem" is not Israel's, but the Muslims'. To try to solve the Muslims' problems by imposing a peace when much of the Muslim world is burning in crisis and jihad, backwardness and hatred of Jews, is misguided. Globalized anti-Semitism directed at delegitimizing Israel is the problem. Iran is the problem. Syria is the problem. Thus Lebanon is the problem. And yes, certainly there is a real problem between Israelis and Arabs. Solve the aforementioned ones really, truly, and you will have massive support among Israelis for a peace deal with a responsible, accountable and honest Palestinian counterpart.

As long as Obama continues to signal to Netanyahu that no matter what he does, there will be no repercussions from the U.S., what incentive does he have to ever make peace with the Palestinians?

He is the first US president since Carter to publically hold Israel to its prior commitments and speak openly about the imperative action that is needed to create a palestinian stae. Thats why Israel hates him. It remains to be send however if once again the palestinians will be sacrificed on the altar of zionist pressure. This is not about the "unbrweakable" US-Israel alliance. It is about Israel living up to its part of the bargain as part of that alliance.

at least israeli's see through him... the guy visits every other country on earth, he says middle east peace is his priority, he talks incessantly about it, and yet, he does not have the balls or decency to come visit a country he claims as one of his stuanchest allies..but would rather visit countries who have kidnappeed americans, killed americans, tortured americans...and have generally been anti american for decades...and so now he thinks that by appeasing them, and sacrificing his allies, that he is going to be respected? what a fool...obama is a liar who has been educated by the long line of black american preachers who hate jews... farakhan, wright, jackson, sharpton...add in men like khalidi and said and you have your wonderful US president...a real stand up guy.

Haaretz quote "mention the legacy left by Rabin". What is Rabin legacy ? Rabin's last speech in the Knesset (Israel parliament) was rabin's legacy . He emphasized his opposition to a Palestinian state, and that Israel would not return to the pre-1967 borders, stated his support to Jewish Settlements in Judea and Samaria and said that 'united Jerusalem, which will include both Maaleh Adumim and Givat Ze'ev, [will be] the capital of Israel, under Israeli sovereignty." The deeply knowledgable Obama has done nothing but reassure, with almost neurotic consistency, Israel about the unbreakable bond, indeed love affair, between the US and Israel. Netanyahu snubbed his modest proposal for a freeze on settlements, enlisted the US to try to ensure the Goldstone report didn't get to the Security Council. So, we have an ardent suitor, having his face rubbed in the muck, and 6-10% satisfaction by the Israeli public which dismisses this as just smooth talk. George Bush knew nothing about Israel, or the Middle East, waged two wars there, shut up about settlements, and earned huge respect in Israel.
