Obama to Iran: Offer of dialogue still stands

Tehran has chosen to isolate itself rather than build a better future, says president in video message.

By News Agencies Tags: Barack Obama Israel news Iran nuclear

U.S. President Barack Obama renewed his administration's offer of dialogue and diplomacy with Tehran late Friday, a year after his offer of a new beginning with Iran failed to achieve concrete results.

Obama, who addressed Iranians in a new videotaped appeal to mark Nowruz - an ancient festival celebrating the arrival of spring and the Persian New Year - has pledged previously to pursue aggressive sanctions to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.

"We are working with the international community to hold the Iranian government accountable because they refuse to live up to their international obligations," Obama said in the address released on Saturday, according to excerpts released by the White House.

"But our offer of comprehensive diplomatic contacts and dialogue stands," he said.

Iran denies Western claims it is seeking to build a nuclear bomb and says its nuclear program is aimed at generating electricity.

Later on Saturday, Ahmadinejad issued his own, more combative New Year's address to Iranians, in which he said that Iran would stand even more firmly against the West.

"Enemies have tried to weaken our country but they have failed and in the coming year we will stand even more firmly against them than before," he said.

Obama said Washington was committed to a "more hopeful" future for the Iranian people despite U.S. differences with Iran's government.

"The United States believes in the dignity of every human being and an international order that bends the arc of history in the direction of justice - a future where Iranians can exercise their rights, to participate fully in the global economy and enrich the world through educational and cultural exchanges beyond Iran's borders," Obama said in the video, which had Farsi subtitles.

Obama has signaled a willingness to speak directly with Iran about its nuclear program and hostility toward Israel, a key U.S. ally.

At his inauguration last year, the president said his administration would reach out to rival states, declaring "we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist."

Meanwhile, efforts to impose new sanctions on Iran have been slow to find unified support from U.S. allies.

"Our offer of comprehensive diplomatic contacts and dialogue stands," Obama said in the video. "Indeed, over the course of the last year, it is the Iranian government that has chosen to isolate itself and to choose a self-defeating focus on the past over a commitment to build a better future."

The United States has not had formal diplomatic relations with Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

During his first year in office Obama marked Nowruz with a then-unprecedented message offering Iran a "new beginning" of diplomatic engagement with the United States.

But Tehran rebuffed Obama's gesture and relations soured further when Iranian authorities cracked down on opposition protesters after a disputed election last June, drawing U.S. condemnation.

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has criticized Obama as merely a continuation of President George W. Bush's policies toward Israel. Khamenei has also called Israel a cancerous tumor that is on the verge of collapse and has called for its destruction.

Last year, Obama's message to the Iranians warned that better relations will not be advanced by threats. "We seek instead engagement that is honest and grounded in mutual respect."

Meanwhile, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Friday that Russia could back a sanctions resolution on Iran, Russian news agencies quoted a senior Putin aide as saying.

Putin's deputy chief of staff, Yuri Ushakov, was quoted as saying that Putin had affirmed that a sanctions resolution "was possible," Itar-Tass news agency reported.

"Vladimir Vladimirovich gave his appraisal of the situation in Iran and underlined that such a situation (involving Russian support of a sanctions resolution) was possible," RIA state news agency quoted Ushakov as saying.

But Putin also cautioned Clinton that sanctions "do not always help to resolve such an issue and that sometimes they can have a ounterproductive impact," Ushakov was quoted as saying by RIA.

A lot of judaism and christianity is borrowed from the Persians' Zoroastrian religion, but I don't wish to go into that... What I'm interested to know is who gives a sh** about whatever value that divides us instead of uniting us? All of our collective religions mean NOTHING, when they divide us in our humanity and don't mean sh** when they fail to unite us as the simple species we are, on the face of the planet, for the very short amount of time we are here..... Who cares what system one is born to or what rituals one gets at burial when the whole point is that you didn't get the point of life? That you were here at a certain point in time, among your fellow humans wherever that happened to be, and instead of watching the sunrises and sunsets, you pre-occupied yourself with silly little rituals that separated you from the rest of your pack.....missing the beauties of your differences..... Pretty sad, don't you think?

If it weren't for riding Bush's coattails in the successful integration of Iraq into the world community, the list of Obama's successes in foreign policy would be ZERO. If Iran is to be kept from acquiring nuclear weapons, Russia will have to take the lead, as indeed they should. The realpolitik reality is that Iran's nuclear weapons will more likely be used in a central asia power struggle (i.e. Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, etc) with Russia than they ever would against Israel, much less America.

Iranian are on track to make nukes and threaten the world,if they are not stopped with conventional military means, you need to stop them by unconventional means, you need to stop them by the same means they will desimate several millions in Middle East, very possibly in Europe and America. Iran has the means to deliver and working hard in parallel. The west is playing dead, but for how long?

India and Pakistan are do not like one another. Both have nuclear warheads pointed at each other. The USA and Russia still do not see eye to eye. Both have nuclear war heads pointed at one another....as well as towards China. China is China and wants to be friends with everyone but has nuclear warheads pointed at most western capitals. Bottom line...noone is going to push the button. The 1st nuclear warhead fired at any other country will immediately result in retalliation. This will bring in alliances and then missiles will be flying all over the place. End result is THE END. Like at the last scene of a movie. Having nuclear weaponry results in fear to using it. The great deterrent is ownership.

And wrt Iran and nukes there is still no evidence of nuke weapons ambitions yet we're (well, Bibi vision anyway) being brainwashed into pre-emptively attacking Iran. I think Obama taking this line is a sign that Iran is no longer an enemy. Watch as he removes them from the axis of evil list in the near future as a symbol of trust.

    • Maureen Ann
    • 20.03.10
    • 14:01

Russia is not likely to agree to sanctions on Iran without China. China is not going to agree to anything that may cause a threat to its national security or economy. China has approximately 20% of the worlds population. America accounts for approximately 5% of the world's population, and consumes 25% of the world's energy. Iran, and China (peacefully you may notice) have giant gas and oil trade agreements in place. Any interruption to such trade agreements would be detrimental to China's economy... don't forget, America is in big debt to China. You really must look at the bigger picture, Julianna. Before you suggest "huge sticks" and "incredible force," you might just stop and realize, Israel's intransigence is what needs to be brought into line before all else, as far as M.E. peace is concerned. BTW, it wouldn't be a good idea to stir up the hungry dragon. Cheers.

Yes, the US will still talk to Iran if Iran wants to talk. No, the US won't start a war with Iran. The US will pursue what the US feels are appropriate sanctions. The Russians and Chinese probably won't go along. Israel will be free to try a naval blockade of Iran since they think that is a sanction against others and only an act of war when against Israel. It is doubtful anybody will assist Israel in the naval blockade. Iran is digging mine-shafts. Israel should be digging them too and stocking them with the people Israel has determined it needs there. (See Dr Strangelove for appropriate criteria.) The mine-shaft gap is growing! The US has extended its nuclear umbrella over Israel and no country protected by that has ever been attacked with nukes.

Russia is hanging Obama out to dry. This announcement states that Russia 'could' back UN sanctions and probably will not oppose sanctions. It is hanging Obama out to dry. It is up to Obama, who considered embracing the Dali Lama more important than maintaining good relations with China, to pull it off. Russia doesn't want a nuclear Iran but it also is not willing to harm itself by alining itself with an administration that cannot even control dependent welfare states like Israel.
