Obama Nobel win still can't light Mideast peace spark

Differences between Israel and PA appear to remain substantial, despite Mitchell's efforts.

The differences between Israel and the Palestinian Authority appear to remain substantial even after a series of meetings with the U.S. special envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell. Positions may have even hardened, with no breakthrough imminent, despite U.S. President Barack Obama's winning of the Nobel Peace Prize.

In a week, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is scheduled to submit to Obama a progress report, which both sides will be keen to influence.

Since his election last November, Obama has sought to push for a resolution of the conflict; Mitchell's appointment was one of his first moves, followed by his speech in Cairo and the meeting at the UN General Assembly with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

On Friday morning, Mitchell and his aides met with Netanyahu at the Prime Minister's Bureau in Jerusalem for two hours. No news emerged of an agreement for resuming talks.

"No breakthrough is expected during this visit," an adviser to the prime minister told Haaretz. A meeting with Abbas on Friday evening also brought nothing new. According to a senior official, "the Palestinians are showing no flexibility, and as a result Israel has also stiffened its stance."

Abbas told Mitchell that there can be no resumption of negotiations without a complete freeze in settlement construction, especially in Jerusalem. The PA is thus returning to its original positions, rejecting the possibility of resuming talks unless Israel agrees to freeze settlement construction, according to the Palestinian daily Al-Ayam. Abbas reportedly told Mitchell that there will now be a complete freeze on talks for a final agreement. Abbas also stressed that the road map requires Israel to open the PLO offices in Jerusalem.

Abbas also told Mitchell how he has changed his mind and wants to see the Goldstone report on Israel's military operation in Gaza last winter brought before the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva for discussion.

The PA reportedly intends to ask the council to vote on whether to present the report to the Security Council for deliberations; chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said Abbas told Mitchell that the PA was taking steps to protect the Palestinian people.

According to the newspaper, Palestinian and Israeli negotiating teams will travel to the United States to hold talks on resuming negotiations. This afternoon, Mitchell is due to meet with Netanyahu once more.

Senior Israeli officials said Clinton's progress report will discuss the two sides' positions on the preconditions necessary for resuming negotiations, a timetable carrying them out, and settlement construction. "The report will present the agreements and mostly the differences that have remained," an Israeli official said.

How can there be peace? It's as if the leaders of the Muslim world have "ordered" the Arab Palestinians to concede nothing and proceed on reconquering the Jews' and Christians' Holy Land. Even if it kills every single Arab Palestinian. This view is killing the Palestinian culture and their future. What Muslims would want to be known as THE ONES who lost it to the Jews and Christians, even though Muslims themselves have been kicked out before by the Persians and Brits; even though they have no legal claim to it; even though Allah tells them Israel is the Land of the Jews. What might help is if those Arab/Palestinians who have no legal ancestry in Israel/Palestine leave.

You have to hand it to the Israeli's for their chutzpah. They expect the PA to come to the negotiating table while they carry on stealing Palestinian land in the name of settlement 'natural growth'. Moreover they seem to have tried to make negotiations conditional on Abbas letting the Goldstone report get kicked into the long grass... When, if ever, will the US put serious pressure on Israel to behave reasonably?

Obama is not the messiah... He is a mere mortal whose timing and message offers a ray of hope of dialogue and reconcilitation in troubled times. Whether his message can help ignite change will depend upon how people choose to receive it. We will be waiting a long time if we think it is Obama's responsibility. He serves as a conduit but we the people and more importantly those impacted by the ongoing violence, intolerance, political games manship are the ones who have to change and that starts from within, within our hearts our families, our communities... Nothing short of this is only setting Obama up as the fall guy when things don't work out... Just anothert person to blame for our misery because we do not have the will to change.

if and when the Arabs, Palestinian and otherwise, finally accept what the entire world has accepted since the end of the 19th century and has been expressed in 1917, 1923, 1937 and 1947: that the Jewish people, as all other peoples, has the right of national self-determination and independence. Israel, as has been accepted by the UN, is this expression. So why is it that the Muslim-Arabs have refused to accept this right and and have rejected the UN resolutions on the basis of which Israel was proclaimed? It is clear: The Muslim-Arabs goal is not peace with Israel; it is only a state of non-belligerence until they once again can gather the strength to annihilate it, as they attempted to do in 1948, 1967 and 1973. Recognize Israel's right to be and peace will come. Don't recognize Israel's right to national self-determination and independence as the nation-state of the Jewish people and the conflict will continue, of which you will continue to be the main loosers.

Hopefully we are in the end game. Hilary Clinton's report is sure to blame the Israelis for the lack of progress. Sanctions on Israel will start. At first these will only be known by Netanyahu, so that he can retreat without loss of face. Unfortunately he is the sort of man to brazen it out - so sure of himself is he. The sanctions will have to become public and all hell will break out in Israel. It may need civil war, but two states will come.

    • 11.10.09
    • 10:42

The Spark the Middle East needs is to pull the rug out under Israel. I have proposed taking Hamas off the terrorist list and lifting the blockade. Hamas is a national resistant group. It has never targeted any other group but Israelis, has no ties to international terror; and has refrained from suicide bombing & targeting Israelis for some time now. (Qassams are just child's play.) In addition, there is no reason for people to get caught up in uprooting plans--all the IDF has to set adate for withdrawal and people will uproot themselves. Those who wish to stay can apply for Palestin-ian citizenship. Hence there is no reason to talk about giving settlement blocs to Israel. Dutch

Until Obama, Clinton, and Mitchell focus solely on moving Israel into line with Internationlal law prohibiting territorial expansion by military means (ie. the 1967 war), it makes no sense to even begin peace negotiations. When Israel obeys the law, uproots ALL of its settlements across the 67 armistice line, then peace negotiations can begin.

Obama will get nowhere trying to mediate between Israel and the Palestinians. Neither party is willing and/or able to make the necessary concessions. If the Americans are truly serious in wanting to bring about a permanent solution, they will need to present a concrete proposal. Not a "road map" to nowhere as did Bush, but a detailed plan. To be sure, amendments could be made by the parties, but the Americans will need to stand by the plan's fundamentals. And, the parties need to know that there will be a heavy cost to not agreeing with the plan.

Barack is repeating the mistake of all past presidents: trying to force negotiations and the actual details of a permanent solution. The solution can only begin when the parties voluntarily sit down together and try and deal with the issues. Apparently they get a benefit from the status quo: Israel continues it's expansionist dreams, Palestine wallows in hatred and an extremist idealized vision of Israel without Jews. The illusions are more powerful now than the reality of both sides relinquishing their fantasies and engaging in reality, comprimise, and a viable peace. Obama should shift from the stick to persuasion.

This is using a Nobel prize to tie the hands of the US in dealing with North Korea and Iran. The US can't deliver leadership and no one else can step in. While Obama seems to accept that the prize was premature recognition it is unclear whether he won't let it limit his thinking about dealing with the critical problems he has failed at so far. If Iran is not deterred from going nuclear by talking and he won't consider sanctions the conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis will seem like a birthday candle next to a forest fire.

How could Israel be charged with not allowing any hope of peace? Anyone aware of reality in the last thirty years understands what anyone who has lived during the last half-century knows. That the Israel today is not the Israel of a half-century ago. Fifty years ago, Israel wanted peace with the entire world. Now Israel wants Judea and Samaria, and the world be damned. I ask little of Israel beyond honesty. I am more than glad to see peace in Israel. What I am not willing to accept is israel continuing to torture, murder and oppress Palestinians simply because Israel will not be honest with itself, or the world. Is there anyone in Israel willing to be honest? (s there anyone willing to be decent? Is there ANY ISRAELI willing to prevent the systematic divorce between reality and mythology? Is there ANY Israeli willing to do what the world did not in 1939?

little can be expected in terms of an accommodation of peaceful coexistence between Israel and its Arab neighbors, Palestinian or otherwise. Israel has accepted the demand of the Palestinian Arabs to have their independent nation-state. Now it is time for the Arabs to accept the demand of the Jewish people to recognize Israel as its nation-state. Refusing to accept Israel as the national home of the Jewish people, coming on the historic background of having attempting to wipe it off the face of earth, one remains with the full impression that the Palestinian Arab leadership wishes to negotiate the elimination of Israel, step-by-step, stage-by-stage. Israelis have no intention to negotiate their demise and the annihilation of the Jewish people national home.

    • David
    • 11.10.09
    • 06:01

The problem is the same as it has been for a century. The Arabs dont want another Arab Palestinian state. They just dont want Israel. They dont want to admit historical facts. They dont want to respect Jewish holy sites. It goes on and on. Abbas wrote a thesis denying the Holocaust. Hamas has a charter than calls for killing Jews. The Arabs have said NO to another arab Palestinian state in the 20s, in the 40s, didnt even try from 48-67, said no again under Olso and Clinton. To make peace you have to tell the Arabs this is it. Make peace with Israel or there will no longer be an option for another Arab Palestinian state. Those Arabs in Judea and Samaria will now be Jordan Palestinian citizens. Those in Gaza will be Egyptians. Its the best and most likely scenario. Every time the Arabs are offered a state they say no. They dont want it. Stop offering it. Israel left Gaza and got missles. Israel allowed the Muslims to stay on the Temple Mount and they desecrate it.

Only an insane man would seek war with Iran. Only an insane nation would seek war with Iran. Only Israel seeks war with Iran. And that is the problem, Israel has gone insane. A nuclear power has gone stark raving insane. It is a matter of time, not fact, when Israel will start a nuclear war out of it's uncontrollable fear. israel, beyond any rational control will initiate a nuclear war. Insane men will pursue insanity because they are insane and their nation agrees with their lunacy. So who will be to blame? The Iran attacked by Israeli lunatics, or the Israel which allows lunatics to attack Iran? Go figure. One thing is certain, Israel cannot strike Iran's nuclear program effectively unless it uses nuclear weapons. If Israel is not going to use nuclear weapons, then it is totally insane to cause a crisis at all. Is Israel nuts, or what? Then, perhaps it will not seek a nuclear war with iran. Then why does it seek ANY war with iran?

Israel, the nexus of peace in the region has absolutely no interest in peace in the region. Israel does not consider peace possible and Israel does everything it can to destroy any hope for peace. So, is Israel wrong? If there can be no peace in the mideast as Israel believes, then there can be no peace for Israel. "There is no instance of a nation which has benefited from protracted war." - Sun Tzu Israel has the choice. It has the power. It can destroy any nation in the region. No other nation matters at all. Peace, war, status quo, only Israel may decided, Israel choses endless war, and that is a fact. But, where does endless war leave Israel?

Why does peace success have to be measured in Israel/Palestine?

With all due respect to the 5 million Jews in Israel, let me remind you that you are not the world. You are a very very tiny part of it. Creating such an aura around yourself, and measuring Obama's success around your world is at best funny. Obama has achieved peace between black and white people, between West and East, between North and SOuth America and even reduced the stress in Iraq, and soon will in Iran. He has closed Guantanamo bay. He has eliminated torture in CIA. All of these things has HAS ALREADY achieved. If there are problems in ISrael- Palestine track, go check with Netanyahu and Lieberman.

Now that there is nothing holding back the Goldstone report, there will be a flood of war crime lawsuits in the ICJ. Senior Israeli leaders will be unable to leave Israel for the fear of arrest. When the choice is between settlements and a paralyzed government, the settlements will freeze. Netanyahu could have done that 5 months ago and come out ahead. Instead, now he is playing to the tunes of Hamas.

I'm sure his allies the Pakistanis (who, by the way are the single largest recipients of US foreign aid annually, even though 90% of it ends up with the Taliban and al Qaeda) are thrilled with his "peace"overture stating that the Taliban actually are seeking a peaceful resolution and actually are "nothing like al Qaeda." The Pakistnis thank you BHO. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/10/10/pakistan-hostage-standoff-hovers-obamas-war-deliberations/

Carrots to Abbas: None available, since Netanyahu will not freeze any construction Stick to Abbas: Not possible given his current situation, will only weaken him irrecoverable Carrots to Israel: None available (Netanyahu will accept nothing short of bombing Iran) Stick to Israel: This is the only available possibility for moving forward. Time to fry Netanyahu under the Goldstone report.

The man has had his prize a matter of days and you expect an instant fix. Try explaining to the world how building rooms onto illegal houses on illegally occupied land is normal and okay. Peace tomorrow when Israel works that one out!

This is a surprise? Oh, there must be nothing to report other than the hopelessness of the peace situation.
