Obama delays embassy move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem

Despite U.S. law recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital, Bush and Clinton also delayed move.

By The Associated Press Tags: Jerusalem Barack Obama Israel news

President Barack Obama is delaying moving the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.

A 1995 U.S. law recognizes Jerusalem as Israel's capital and ordered that the embassy be relocated there. But the law also permits the president to delay the move for six-month periods, based on national security grounds.

Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush invoked the clause during their presidencies.

Obama notified Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton of his decision on Thursday. He first delayed moving the embassy in June.

The location of the embassy is a sensitive issue in efforts to negotiate peace in the Middle East.

Well, Doctor, US law re Jerusalem is irrelevant. Or haven't you heard? It makes not one iota of difference what Congess says; what the UN/international community says is what is happening. Keep up.

Mr. Obama, please clarify for me what attack do you fear? Do you fear that an embassy in Jerusalem could not be protected, like your current on in Tel-Aviv, I am sure Israeli's will have the means to help, and if in need the USA military and CIA can probably help ensure the protection that your property so rightly deserves. But, if your fear is from violent reprisal from either outside or inside your country as a result of the decision to folllow through with a LAW FROM YOUR CONGRESS, PEOPLE WHO ARE DIRECTLY ELECTED, AND REPRESENT THE PEOPLE BY REP BY POP, UNLIKE YOURSELF WHO IS INDIRECTLY ELECTED THROUGH ELECTORAL COLLEGES. Now If it is from this second fear, than I say that you have caved to terrorism. ter⋅ror⋅ism  –noun 1. the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, esp. for political purposes. AMERICANS IS THIS THE PRESIDENT YOU VOTED FOR? A WEAK MAN WHO WILL CAVE TO THOSE WHO THREATEN VIOLENCE? RATHER THAN STAND AND BE STRONG?

Bush and Clinton - 30 Delays

Between them Bush and Clinton delayed the decision 30 times. Obama seems far behind them in delaying. Of course as the city limits of Jerusalem seem to expand, the Israeli government could simply declare wherever the US embassy is to be within Jerusalem. Next year Ramallah will probably be declared inside Jerusalem at the rate the city limits grow.

Wrong, #3 Mark, 1995 US law specifies "united J'lem"
    • Dr. L. Brnd
    • 04.12.09
    • 18:20

1995 U.S. law which Obama and his predecessors have delayed implementing allegedly "on national security grounds" specified that united Jerusalem as defined by Israel as the capital of Israel and only of Israel. The only US embassy that might wind up in the vicinity would be in the already designated Abu Dis zone, which is not in so-called "East Jerusalem". East Jerusalem is an artificial and obsolete designation for the portion of Jerusalem conquered by Trans-Jordan and illegally annexed in 1951, which the US to this day has never recognized. A fallacy to designate all the land in unified Jerusalem outside of the old Green Line as "East Jerusalem"; in fact, the tiny former Jordanian "East Jerusalem" municipal boundaries did not include any of the large Jewish suburbs build since 1967. No US "Palestine" embassy will be there - our Congress has spoken!

to think that just because of an AIPAC sponsored law passed on the hill the United states would be the only country on Planet Earth to move their embassy to Jerusalem. That is why they put the 6 month review clause in it the Senators and the Representatives could take AIPAC's money whilst ensuring Bill Clinton, George W Bush and now Barack Hussein Obama had a get out clause. Thats why Israelis and Israel firsters are screaming blue murder today, they was duped.

4 # 8 & Embassy, Right now that's not important ! But Germany, after her miserable war not only, didn't get Lebensraum, which she wanted to rob, steal & plunder a peaceful country, Russia. She also lost the Sudetenland,& about 3 million germans were sent packing back to Germany. In Poland; a new border with germany. The Oder-Niesse Line which shifted Westwards, which was also once populated w/germans. Zo u Zee ! The Lebensraum worked the other way around ! But in the meantime about 5 mil.germans had 2 go back. That's called Poetic Justice ! Now what ? Are you going to wait for another rabble-rouser to reclaim lost property! Ha! Ha! Ha!

on that if I were you. Doesn't matter who is US President as it is now the case that the international community, ALL of them, are now speaking up and out against Israel's BS over there. Some hope for Palin's run for Pres, who cries all Jews will be moving to Israel in the "coming days, weeks and year", much to the surprise of my Jewish friends who were unaware of their own plans to leave the sanity of the US and then deal with the Jewish Taliban now taking over Israel. Tea?

Obama nor Dubya nor anybody else has the power to declare Jerusalem the capital of the Jews. Even if the US embassy was there, the international community has not and will not recognize Israel's blatant land grabs and in contravention of the original agreement when Europes 'Jews' plopped down over there. Obama is still stuck in your craw I see. That's good. It means he is on the right track. Tea?

won't ever be your capital per the original 'plop down' agreement Jews had when Israel was created. Dubya didn't move it; Obama didn't move it and despite was the Zionist controlled US Congress says, nobody is going to move it. In fact, the Pals are close to having a state unilaterally declared by the international community and it is about time. Jews had better learn how to read the handwriting on the wall as it has historically been their shortcoming. The int'l community is well aware of Israel's deceptions and her long range plan to steal all Palestinian land. Folks are finally speaking the truth and no Dershowitz type attacks on the truthtellers will save the day. Tea?

The word "conquest" denotes initiating war. Israel attacked in self defense, after letting Jordan know that if they did not attack, neither would Israel. Jordan attacked anyway. Jerusalem was truly conquered in 1948 in fighting initiated by the Arab countries after the UN agreed to partition. Not one country gave any objection. Jordan did not live up to Armistice Agreements. Again, Not one country gave any objection. Why is it "conquest" when Israel defends itself. Why is it not conquest when Israel is attacked?

Any compromise worked out would be OK with the US as long as there is Israeli Palestinian agreement. Do you think there are enough on either side to get the politicians to the table or to force such an agreement?

The trouble with that view is that it takes Jerusalem away from Israel and the Jewish people. How long would it be before the rest of Israel followed too? It is Jerusalem that is so important to our faith, and to our history, and to surrender that, is in my opinion, giving up everything we have stood for since 1948. In fact, the Psalmist says, "If I forget you oh Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill..."
