Noam Shalit: Gilad is suffering and rotting in Hamas captivity

Father of captive IDF soldier thanks negotiations team, says he expects Gilad to come home soon.

By Haaretz Service Tags: Gilad Shalit Hamas Israel news Gaza

Noam Shalit, father of abducted Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit, told reporters Friday that Israel must continue efforts to free his son and must remember that he is suffering in the hands of his captors.

"In spite of our impression that he [Gilad] is in relatively good condition, we cannot forget that he is suffering and rotting in Hamas prison nearly 1,200 long days and nights."

Shalit's comments came hours after he viewed a video made weeks ago in which Shalit is seen alive and well in Hamas captivity in Gaza.

Shalit added that his family "expects this ordeal to end and for Gilad to return home very soon."

Shalit also thanked German negotiators who helped secure the release of the tape, which Hamas handed over to Israel in exchange for the release of 20 female Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.

In the video, Shalit says that he had been reading newspapers in search of information regarding his situation.

He adds that he has been waiting a long time to be released, and expresses his love for his family. Shalit then recounts a personal anecdote from before his abduction, when his family visited him at his IDF army base.

Earlier Friday, Shalit's family approved the broadcast of video footages of their son, saying that Hamas could do what they wanted with the footage, and that they rather control its release rather than Gilad's abductors.

A spokesman for the family told reporters that the family had contacted the Prime Minister's Office, officially permitting the release of the footage to the media.

Yona, Israel controls Gaza's Egypt border... - 2nd try

...also in the Goldstone Report, see page 85, paragraph 278: "Given the specific geopolitical configuration of the Gaza Strip, the powers that Israel exercises from the borders enable it to determine the conditions of life within the Gaza Strip. Israel controls the border crossings (including to a significant degree the Rafah crossing to Egypt, under the terms of the Agreement on Movement and Access164) and decides what and who gets in or out of the Gaza Strip. It also controls the territorial sea adjacent to the Gaza Strip and has declared a virtual blockade and limits to the fishing zone, thereby regulating economic activity in that zone. It also keeps complete control of the airspace of the Gaza Strip, inter alia, through continuous surveillance by aircraft and unmanned aviation vehicles (UAVs) or drones. It makes military incursions and from time to time hit targets within the Gaza Strip..."

My point being that if you guys consider that in comparison to the Palestinians suffering Shalit's is a non starter then maybe you have to accept that you can't begin to understand, and never will, the Millions of Jews who were raped, murdered and Gassed on a scale one cannot possibly comprehend. Better not to differenciate suffering while sitting comfortably in the privacy of your own homes.

Open Egypt's Gaza border, then talk of Israeli "oppression"
    • yona
    • 03.10.09
    • 10:34

Many still don't get it. Not only does Egypt have a Gaza border (no, Israel does not surround or besiege Gaza) but Egypt keeps Gazans prisoner there for years, and forced back thousands trying to flee into Egypt during Cast Lead. As if this weren't sick enough, Arab states still keep Arabs in refugee camps, while Israel saved almost a million Jews kicked from Arab states. No moral equivalency here. Case closed. Shalit is thin and drawn and you may have noticed his "smile" when he mentioned his Hamas captors. How much you wanna bet that "smile" was forced?

That honorable man, while suffering under the emotional strain of the kidnapping of his son, shows a class and decency that not a single Israeli journalist comes up to. The press makes it look as if this is a victory of Netanyahu, nobody mentions the Egyptian and German negotiators. As if arbitrating between the bitterly antagonized sides is no big deal. D'oh. Mr. Shalit, here is praying for the safe return of your beloved! Don't despair, this ordeal will come to an end soon.

the cruelty of the dilemma is that it pits the worth of one life, against the releasing of avowed terrorists who will cause more deaths. i can understand the shalit family, and every israeli who values gilads life, but is it fair at the expense of other lives in the future? israel has been arresting wanted terrorists on a daily basis, and tho it isn't elaborated, is this stockpiling prisoners for future exchanges? a cynical sick business on both sides, and the sooner Hamas and Israel stop dealing in it the closer real peace will be.

What is wrong with everyone. Hamas is a terrorist organisation who were elected in Gaza, and have kidnapped a soldier, not during a war (so he is not a POW). That is why the blockade continues. Because of the rocket fire, and the capture of Shalit. Further, Palestinians in Israeli Jail can be visited by Red Cross. Can Shalit? NO. they can even study degrees. The are treated humanely, unlike Shalit. I don't know how you people who say he should rot and that Hamas is more moral than Israel can sleep at night.

If they were not asleep they might have well been. Under any circumstances they were not in action, were not firing into Gaza and most certainly not firing indiscriminately. Gilad, stay strong, just staying alive in such outrageous conditions is a victory in itself. And no, fools who think you know what's going on there: Gazans are not starving. They may not be obese like Americans, but any video will show you people of absolutely normal weight and energetic, well-nourished boys running wild in the streets.

Hamas refuses Israel's right to exist and for the Jews to live in Israel period. Rockets, attacks and suicide bombings are inevitable solely for the fact that Israel is there. When attacked Israel strikes back. The fact that Israel has better capacity to strike back is irrelevant and does not give Hamas a superior morality. Peace, accept Israel's right to exist...maybe that's something to consider.

Of course the Palestinians are suffering far more then the Israelis are. It's a terrible reality. At the core of this issue is not the settlements, nor is it terrorism OR rejection of Israel's right to exist. It's the Palestinian nation's refusal to accept something as meager as the West bank. Well I say, suck it up. Who said life is fair or that it can be made fair? So long as you allow incitement against Israel to continue, Israel's occupation of you will remain something that it MUST do. Stop pointing fingers. It would be much worse to live in the Congo; be happy with the West Bank and make peace already.

Well?, you do realize that for a POW situation to occur, there must be a war. By your logic, all the prisoners that are "rotting" inside Israeli prisons are also POWs. If you think people inside Gaza are entitled to live by Geneva convention laws, well then they should fight as such as well. That means that Hamas at all times must wear identifiable uniform and not use civilians as shields or suicide bombers.

"...justify the suffering of others? give me a bucket! Israel collective punishes all Palestinians, whose land they covet. Each time Israel attacks, Hamas should have increased their demands.

Egypt and Hamas force Gazans to remain imprisoned in Gaza - Egypt even FORCED BACK thousands of Gazans who breached the border to run for their lives into Egypt during israel's counter-attack to years of missiles from Gaza - the missiles and more smuggled in from Egypt, no less! The warped double standard of those screaming "Israel's" Gaza siege, and "Israel's" open-air Gaza prison is beyond disgusting. Israel saved and absorbed almost a million Jews kicked from Arab states, while Arab states still keep Arabs in refugee camps there - to this very day. Think on that a moment. Knowing only that Egypt has a Gaza border is enough to empty the sick lies of the Israel-haters.
