Gunmen kill police officer in Sinai

A police officer was killed and another injured after gunmen shot at them in the northern Sinai, Egypt’s Interior Ministry said Tuesday. Security sources say they could not confirm if the incident was a militant attack by jihadist groups they have been tracking since last August, when an attack at a checkpoint near the Rafah border killed 16 soldiers and officers. In the latest incident, 1st Lt. Mohamed Ahmed Thabet was shot dead and Cpl. Hussein Mohamed al-Haddad was injured, the state news agency MENA said. “The forces were attacked by criminal elements who fired a barrage of heavy gunfire that was returned by the police force, but [the attackers] managed to escape.” ‏(Reuters‏)

Paris suburb to honor Palestinian terrorists

The Paris suburb of St. Denis is scheduled to host a ceremony Wednesday honoring several Palestinian terrorists. Among those who are scheduled to appear are Allam Kaabi and Salah Hamouri, members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine who, respectively, assassinated Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze’evi and planned to assassinate Rabbi Ovadia Yosef. The event is organized by the National Collective for a Just and Lasting Peace between Palestinians and Israelis, known by its French acronym CNPJDPI. A representative of Amnesty International is scheduled to attend, according to a statement by CNPJDPI that described the scheduled speakers as “recently released prisoners.” ‏(JTA‏)
