Palestinian prisoner’s hunger strike goes 100 days

Palestinian officials say a prisoner in an Israeli jail who’s not eaten for over 100 days is on the longest hunger strike ever launched by a Palestinian. Akram Rikhawi is serving a nine-year sentence for transporting suicide bombers, and seeks early release for ailments including diabetes and asthma. Anat Litvin of Physicians for Human Rights-Israel said Rikhawi, 39, needs urgent care from a lung specialist and neurologist. The Israel Prison Service was not available for comment; it has said Rikhawi is receiving proper care. Rikhawi started fasting on April 12, just before a mass hunger strike of 1,200 other prisoners, who demanded better conditions. They stopped after winning some concessions. ‏(AP‏)

Jewish cemetery in Hungary vandalized

Fifty-seven graves were desecrated in a Jewish cemetery in the central Hungarian city of Kaposvar early yesterday morning by unknown persons, reported the MTI news agency. Kaspovar Mayor Karoly Szita said he was “upset and disgusted” by the vandalism. City officials said they hope to help police in capturing those responsible as soon as possible. The local Jewish community says the act was motivated by racism. ‏(DPA‏)
