Demanding recognition of Israel as a 'Jewish State' is deliberately offensive to non-Jewish citizens. I'm not a lawyer, but it's my understanding that you can't plead that you can't try me unless everyone else who committed a crime is tried also. Israeli law may be different, but most law systems say if you committed a crime, you can be tried, regardless of what happens to anyone else. The Goldstone report does also cite the IDF report and it also cites Israeli leaders and Israeli citizens. It also used this newspaper. Apart from that their is physical evidence. From reading the report (and I was not counting) the single most important document "a charge" and "a decharge" was the IDF report. The main difference between the Goldstone report and the IDF report is not what happened but more the reasons, the details and the applicable rule of law.

The best way to achieve his goal is to not commit war crimes and crimes against humanity. The second best is to give open and HONEST trials by their own service and government. The later would require open and honest investigations with full and vigorous prosecutions. The Goldstone report is meant for the international community. It has served, and continues to serve its purpose.

Why this pushiness on a concept that is so foggy and probably insulting for non-Jews living here: "Jewish State" What does that mean? That you can with a quiet concience treat non- Jews as second rate citizens? Why is "State" not enough? Recognize israel as a State and homeland for the Jewish people. Why can this not be the formulation? It sounds a whole lot less threatening and basicly means the same that you want the state to identify with Jewish traditions and customs, while giving others the freedom of expression of their traditions. Netanyahu is insistent that the Goldstone report is the product of a Kangaroo court... he doesn't actually specify that the parts condemning Palestinian warcrimes are not part of this Kangaroo court. Although, fortunately, not everyone takes their view on events in the Occupied Territories from Netanyahu.

God Almighty to make such pronouncements. What a fool! Who is any head of state to say that international law does nor apply to his nation - ever? Anybody who can read English (and whatever other language the report came out it) can see clearly in the Goldstone report: the Palestinians committed war crimes. Not only that, but Goldstone made it very clear that these war crimes have been going on for 8 years, not just during Cast Lead. And if you read his conclusions, it is clear that suicide bombings, car bombings, driveby shootings and other Palestinian attacks on Israeli civilians were also war crimes. Thus, the Palestinians have decades of war crimes to answer for. In the current world climate, it appears impossible for anybody outside of Israel to even contemplate that Palestinians should be put on trial. The evil double standard means until Palestinian political and military leaders face justice, the world cannot insist that only Israelis be put on trial.

Someone should remind the Prime Minister that he has no jurisdiction over those countries where, if Israelis involved in war crimes, a magistrate might arrest them for trial. Relations have deteriorated with the United States, with Turkey and with Jordan. That is the price of intransigence. Keep the occupation up, that is the price.

If an Israeli politician or soldier is arrested outside Israel, there is nothing Netanyahu can do about it. This blustering speech is clearly aimed at propping up the morale of those Israelis who are now worrying that their actions in Gaza or Lebanon could land them in jail. All suspected criminals should be put on trial.

The outcome is out of the hands of Israeli government. Outsiders will decide about the Goldstone report and how far to push it. Let's hope for the best.
