Netanyahu to Arab world: Ignore 'lies' about Temple Mount
PM's comments come after Jerusalem unrest; Ben-Eliezer: Israeli Arabs are starting to link up with Hamas.
By Haaretz Service Tags: Islam Hamas Israel newsPrime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged the Arab world on Monday to ignore "lies" that Israel was planning to dig under the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, after repeated outbursts of unrest in the capital over the matter.
"Last week extremist figures tried to undermine [Israel's] stability. This is an extremist minority that spread lies about Israel digging under the Temple Mount. This is a lie," said Netanyahu at a cabinet meeting.
He was apparently also referring to rumors spread among Palestinians and Israeli Arabs of an attempt by Israel to harm the Islamic holy sites in the compound, which contains the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
In a direct address to the Israeli Arab community, Netanyahu said: "You are citizens with equal rights; we want to live together in coexistence and bring our children prosperity."
The head of the Islamic Movement's northern branch, Sheikh Ra'ad Salah, told an Arab television station last week that the "Israeli occupation seeks to build a synagogue on Al-Aqsa Mosque."
The Israel Police subsequently arrested Salah, after the State Prosecutor ruled that his statements could be seen as endangering the peace in the capital; he was later released.
Ben-Eliezer: Israeli Arabs are starting to link up with Hamas
Also Monday, Trade and Labor Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer warned that Israeli Arabs were beginning to link up with Hamas against Israel.
"A certain alliance is forming between Israeli Arabs, specifically the Islamic Movement's Northern Branch, and Hamas," Ben-Eliezer told Israel Radio, adding that Israel would eventually "pay a heavy price if this cooperation is permitted to continue."
The only way to thwart such an alliance, Ben-Eliezer continued, would be to "accelerate the diplomatic process."
"A breakthrough in talks isn't a Palestinian priority, but is first and foremost in Israel's interest in terms of both security and its very existence," the Trade and Labor minister added.
Ben-Eliezer also said he felt Israel should continue along policy lines set by Netanyahu, only in "a much more assertive manner."
"The guidelines the prime minister should set are to accelerate talks, initiate a wide range of measures meant to improve life in the West Bank, and aid [Palestinian President] Mahmoud Abbas," Ben-Eliezer said.
Referring to Abbas' reputed lack of influence among Palestinians, Ben-Elizer said that Israel should still continue dealing with the Palestian leader.
"For now we must sit and talk with Abbas. That's what we have to work with now," Ben-Elizer said, adding that Israel "should sit with him and try to get the process going."

I hate to say this being a Catholic, but the Moslems were not the ones who threw the Jews out of Palestine and Jerusalem. It was the Romans. Matter of fact, when the Moslems took over, didn't their leader Omar allow freedom of worship in the holy city to all non-Moslems that includes Jews? This is a historical fact that cannot be denied. I'm sure some rabid right wing Zionists will claim otherwise, but they can't deny that they were treated a million times better by the Moslems than Europe or the Romans.
It was the Romans. The Arab Moslems have been worshipping at this site since it's creation in the 7th century. The Jews didn't care for it until the late 19th, early 20th century. It appears to me that one group seems to have more legitimate claim to it and it surely ain't the Jews.
Sure, why not Bibi, you have a such a great track records with minorities!!!!!!!!!!!!
Marian have you asked why moslems hate Jewish? They have plenty of reasons for it,Moslems have been deprived of their freedom, basic needs and infrastructure destroyed, humiliated. Jews are cowards against defenceless people. History of Israel has been full of deception, crimes, stealing lands etc.
If Jersulem so important to the Pal, Why do they pray with their asses facing it. You are someone that I want to keep posting. You are the perfect example off why Jews in this great nation cannot forget their are still people out there that hate us
ML:"And how was that mosque mentioned in the Koran"? How indeed was that mosque mentioned in the Koran, as it hasn't been built yet at the time the Koran was written?
Yaakov where do you get the time to post all your vile outpourings of hate. You are also a prolific poster to "Realjewnews" and other vivious anti semetic sites. Thos of us that have followed the Haaretz talbacks are very familiar with you and your lies. You have posed over the years as so many different people that is hard to keep up. How about getting a job Yaakov.
so logical, so open minded, so historically right on. "Indigenous people"?? At what point, mr ben kahana? The Temple Mount has been a Muslim shrine for 13 centuries. and the Muslims did not destroy the Temple. Deal with it but don't bring down the entire world with your crazy messianic false visions.
The reality is that Israel did not provoke the current unrest. The reality is that the claims of a lunatic fringe religious movement in Israel led to rumors which caused a misapprehension which did. The reality is that Israel has been rather careful not to be more provocative than maintaining civil order requires. The reality is most Arabs have not been rioting and inciting to riot. That no one believes Mr. Netanyahu is his fault. He has lied so often that he cannot be assumed to be doing anything else. That folks of each ilk seek to promote further discord, and justify the violence one way or another is disgusting. Then we have the sorts on both sides which simply lie to make their points.
"Palestinian? interest in the Temple Mount starts in 1967." - B. Gold If it didn't began until 1967 why was the second Mosque in the world built there in the 7th century CE? And how was that mosque mentioned in the Koran? Why did people worship in that mosque for over 1,000 years? Why was a dome built over the site where Mohammed was thought to have prostrated himself to pray? Your asserting B. Gold is so ignorant as to be more than absurd, it is insane.
What we have here is a continuation of hundreds of years of Arab hostility and aggression that have stolen the land of indigenous people and claimed their holy sites for themselves. The Temple mount must be liberated for any true lasting peace to exist. Jews must send a clear message that the Temple Mount is for the Jewish people and abandon unwanted attempts to share the Jewish holy site with the occupying religion Islam who claims it solely for themselves.
For hundreds of years when Arabs want to kill some Jews they claim that Jews desecrated the "Al Aska" (what Arabs call Temple Mount). This is a common ploy of Arabs that never fails to work in causing riots, mobs, uproar across Muslim world and the world falls for it. Lets stop falling for Arab lies and embrace the route to peace.
"You [Arab Israelis] are citizens with equal rights . . . "
Does the Bible state that Mt. Moriah is in Jerusalem? How did the Samaritans come to understand Mt. Gerezim as the site of the Temple? Whne did Jerusaslem take precedence over Sechem? or some other cultic center? Jerusalem was always, in Muslim tradition, understood to be the "farthest" place (al aqsa) from which Muhammad ascended and where his horse Buraq, was tethered. There is a whole Islamic literature that was written about Jerusalem and its holiness. Schools and pilgrim inns were established there. If one could not make haj to Mecca, one could visit Jeerusalem, so enough of this propaganda that it means more to Jews than to Muslims who are just hyping this to get at the Jews. The site has been, according to the status quo of holy places, a Muslim holy place. That is its legal status and Jews have not contested that until recently in these current attempts to lay claim to it and build there a synagogue. Jews are allowed but not to declare it their spot and throw off the Muslims.
For a clear perspective I suggest you read Israel's Orr Commission Report. The overwhelming majority of Palestinains in Israel with that country's citizenship are loyal to and have been loyal to the State since 1948. Most of the Arab citizens of Israel were driven from their original villages which are now state land taken over by moshavim or kibbutzim. They were moved into certain designated areas of cities, ie Haifa. They can never be full citizens under zionism, as it is configured presently. By their very ethnicity, they are alienated from the state which is an ethnocracy.
go hide under our temple
Their whole philosophy of existence is based on Islamist lies. They know it, but now it's impossible for them to figure out what is a lie and what isn't. Of course, getting awarded 72 virgins for mass murder is not a lie.
What is this proscription to prayer? Why does it incite Muslims to violence? Why does anything and everything incite Muslims to violence? Why is Violence their first, last and only response to everything? Israel's government has no business humoring those who incite violence. They need to come down very hard, because toying with these animals is very dangerous. Israeli "Arabs" who are aligning with Hamas should be immediately deported to either Gaza or Fatahland, but out of Israel. If they own property, pay for it, confiscate and develop it, and send them packing bag and baggage. Tolerating such an existential threat to internal security is worse than folly; it's suicidal, and Israel has had enough suicidal governments to last it forevermore. mariana
#4 us pal defender, You are the Joke; You would'nt know the truth if it SLAPPED you in the face. Jerusalem is in Isreal the mosque in question can be moved ANYWHERE the moslems want to relocated to? How about a moslum nation, that makes sense. Subversation and lyes is what the nation of islam is about PLAIN and SIMPLE. If your pal buddies told you jump YOUR reply would be HOW HIGH. Fools you sir or mame are surely a FOOL.
you are blinded by the way YOU treat the first nation in your own backyard. shut the %&$@#$# up and cure your own injustices before you preach to others
So, you attack the messengers for attacking the messengers? Nice avoidance of the issues.
Easy to make the assertion that they are second class citizens but have a look at how Arabs are part of the body politic of Israel. Members of Parliament, judges, professors, police, doctors, lawyers, etc. Yes, they go to "special" schools, in many cases because they are religious based schools and in other cases because schools are located in Arab towns where no Jews dare to live. The other contextual point is extremely important. If Turks and other non-Germans were committed to the destruction of Germany, and in significant number acted accordingly, I don't think you would be writing from the civil society that your are presently writing from. Its easy to judge others from your own perch but that judgement is based on false facts and otherwise flawed and unfair.
The Koran is 5000 years too late to lay claim to that piece of land, other than through theft.
Defending Pals is like defending murderers. Your free to chose your side but in terms of the "lies" regarding Temple Mount, where is the evidence? All we have is assertion, nothing else. In the world you have chosen to live in, the U.S., mere assertion has zero persuasive value and indeed in the political atmosphere of Israel is clearly suspect and a call for incitement. But as a Pal friend you would be completely comfortable with that wouldn't you. As to the Goldstone report which has nothing to do with this story, remember Goldstone refused in his report to consider the justification for Israel's attack on Gaza. Having done that, of course it was open for him to make his findings. Suddently self defence is removed as a justification. But we all know, even you know, that Israel was defending its citizens. The amazing thing is so did Goldstone. The report was outrageous as was Goldstone's non-judicial behaviour before and after the report.
obviously al aqsa and surrounding buildings are muslem...even to the most casual observer despite your lies.....more truth....the never was a first temple and the second temple built by herod the edomite is not under al aqsa and no amount of digging and lying will ever produce it...so cry at your wailing wall and beat your head against it....its really got nothing to do with true semetic jews much less you
Is it possible that the PM is unaware of how little Arabs think of him and his policies? Extremists? He has the formula for making them on a daily basis: attack farmers, evict families, expand settlements, let extremist Jews stroll around on the Temple Mount, have your FM say that there can be no peace, sponsor the vilification of a popular president of the United States, attack Jews who are prominent in the Obama administration and so on. This guy is the gift that never stops giving to extremists.
Why don't you go to Gaza and surrender to Haniyeh in exchange for Shalit ? Don't you trust pals? It's racist!!!!!!
This is not a single person but rather a series of propagandists who write out of some zionist apologetics file. They post the same angry rants that have no substance beyond attacking the messenger. They are irrelevant and hence, their anger at the failure of their cause. best to let them stew in their own vitrol.
Think about how christianity behaved 600 years ago.. Islam is 600 years younger, so it's nothing more but the same scheme.. But the only way to change the view of people is education and nothing will improve as long as arabs are treated as as second class citizens in israel, their children seperated in special schools, or only small parts of the wellfare money going to arabic families despite the fact that there are poorer. Just imagine Germany would not allow children with a turkish or arabic background into normal the normal schools.. How would people call that..?
its all hasbara...and you do not exist as a person...just a trained parrot repeating lies...join the human race or drop dead
If Israel is percieved as weak, then the Arabs will link with hamas. If the IDF were to deport members of the northern branch, the hamas link would dry up quick. If Israel feeds Salah rather than dealing with it Slah will grow.
... went slashing their way north, they found the Christian church of St. Mary of Justinian on the Temple Mount. They decided to glue on an onion dome to make it look like a mosque, and who did they get to be the architect? A Byzantine, since the Muslims were not much into building. So today's Muslims, with their wheelbarrows of rocks are "defending" essentially a Christian structure. The Christians sort of get the absurdity of this. The Muslims never will.
Guess that kind of language comes from being a supporter of occupation for ones life. But do try and respond to the topic being discussed. Your diatribes should really be disallowed fro this site. Gutter attacks are really not to your or your kind's credit.
Define favoring, sympatizing, participating or linking up to it, and repress it harshly in Israel. Iran successfully implanted Hamas inside Israel propper. Israel can't look the other way and hide its head in democratic values, when its existance is potentially challenged by close to 20% of its citizens, namely the Muslim Arab-Israelis.
Mr Meir M. is simply talking nonsense. The Palestinians who have Israeli citizenship certainly do have eyes and ears. They have seen what happened to over 600 of their villages and towns. They have seen what has happended throughout the WB. They have seen and heard what has been going on in Silwan and Sheik jarreh. They have seen what has been done at the site of the Temple Mount by groups of Jews claiming exclusive rigth to the site. They have heard and read the literature of groups such as the Temple Mount Faithful. They have seen them marching around the walls of the Old City with their foundation stone. It is not they, mr. meir, who lack eyes and ears. They are reacted exactly to what they have seen and heard for decades.
The only way to ensure cooperation and harmony between Jews and Israeli Arabs is to take steps to integrate Arabs into mainstream Israeli society. How do you begin? Teach Arab schoolchildren Hebrew! Integrate the primary schools! When Arabs begin to feel less like second-class citizens, which is the reality despite Netanyahu's proclamation that they have "equal rights", and more like they are a part of society, no one will worry about Hamas' infiltration into Israel.
What was heard in Israel in 1968 on establishing a Jewish presence on the Temple Mount? What efforts were undertaken by extremeists to carry out such p[lans? Very little indeed. Moshe Dayan and rabbinic authorities respected the Muslim authoirty over the site and the rabbis forbade entry due to concers of ritual purity. But with the asvcendency of the right wing and the toxic connexion between religion and nationjalism, the strident voices of fanaticism became louder and its defenders could be heard in the Knesset and from government ministers. The Temple Mount Faitful is supported by thousands and are sponsored by right wing ministers. There is indeed an attempt to take over or establish, bit by bit a Jewish presence on the TM and claim it exclusively as a Jewish site. This has been ongoing for over a decade and is not a lie. Netanyahu, once again, proves that he is the deceiver. Read the literature of the groups trying to carry out this takeover and how much bolder they are today.
No one believes you except for the extreme right and those who still believe the smoke pipe of a Greater Israel. Please, stop your lies. You are an embarrassment to the PM office and to Israel. Your and our actions are what count: - Crimes in Gaza - Continued settlement of Palestinian land - Continued oppression of Palestinian people - Continued isolation globally - Continued stupidity from our FM - on and on and on ... It's time to be honest or else we'll perish. Peace NOW!
umm...right....like i don`t know the vile little man abbas and who would ever believe the foul lying....well hey he adds to his reputation every day and now calls our leaders liars? abbas after yrs we know you, know you are a liar, and if possible we hate yu more than you hate us
is telling us not to believe our palestinian sisters and brothers. what world does he live in? israel, continue being disconnected from reality. it's good for us.
That sounds familiar...
how is it you people are so obviously completely ignorant of islam and carry on this way....you---we tell you what is holy to us and you----you shut you filthy lying mouths
umm...right....like i don't know the vile little man natanyahu and would ever believe the foul lying....well hey he adds to his reputation every day and now calls our leaders liars? natanyahu after yrs we know you, know you are a liar, and if possible we hate yu more than you hate us
Same old, same old BS... Israel will never change..they keep repeating the same old lies. TATA
If serious peace talks were occurring then hope would spread over the smaller differences. Netayahu has an opportunity to change his ploitical direction and lead the country into peace. It would be exciting and helpful to all involved. It's almost a responsibility for the Prime Minister to do what's right for the majority of his citizens. Making peace would help the majority of Israelis. Without peace what is the long run prospects for Israel, in their region and the world. Peace is the answer.
lost in his own lies
Israel Arabs must be warned and "pay a heavy price if this cooperation continue." To thwart such an alliance, would be to legislate and apply law against Israelis arabs cooperating with hamas. Temple mount is not Mecca and every non moslem should be allowed in any time .
Whilst Arabs are perfectly entitled to worship the sanctity of the site, it can`t be questioned , surely, that Jerusalem has been a holy site to Jews for much longer, and that they also have rights to be alowed to worship without rocks being hurled at them. Further, the respect for holy sites is something that all relegions should have. There are Jewish Zealots for sure, but when did the Arab world recoil at the desecration of Jewish sites whilst Jordan was the custodian. Holy sites should be respected by all, and that includes Arab respect for Jewish sensibikities, as well as vise versa
Me SURA 17 Verse 1 and ``The Aqsa Masjid`` ``The Aqsa Masjid`` means ``the farthest place of prostration`` many billions of Light Years away. This verse informs you that Muhammad, the SOUL, was taken or sent to the highest Heaven to be given the Quran. The Aqsa Masjine is not in Jerusalem my dear cosine, And believe me that the message I tell you now, of Muhammad SOUL taken to the highest Heaven glorifies Mohammad your prophet, then him sent to an earthly Mosque of Al Aqsa in Jerusalem! By the way, my dear cosine, Al Aqsa Mosque was not built at the time of Mohammad, it was built about 80 years after his death, which makes my explanation even more valid, and to the glory of Islam! Have a nice day my dear Cosine, and spread the word!
Even Americans don't believe you any more, you expect Muslims to?
"Glory be to Allah who did take His Servant for a journey by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Aqsa Mosque" The mosque obviously wasn't built when that was written and nowhere in the Koran does it say it was in Jerusalem. In fact, nowhere in the Koran is Jerusalem even mentioned! Now the site is equally holy to Jews and Muslims. Jews have never stopped Muslims from praying there; it's time Muslims showed equal respect for freedom of religion to Jews. They demand it for themselves - now let's see them give it!
We know that most of his rhettoric is just plain "dumb". Israeli leaders have been Peter crying wolf for so long its amazing that the US always comes a running no matter how many times they have been fooled! Israel and the US are much better at ignoring truths but the Palestinians and Arabs have been living under these conditions of double speak and double think for years. Why would they believe anything from Bibi's mouth?
so far all the mullahs are doing is inciting rage. Where is the video of digging, where is the evidence? Yes, Israel has archeological projects around the mosque - it was after all the site of the 2nd temple, and is worthy of exploration - but the mosque itself is not being harmed.
Here is a quote from Koran (7th century AD): "Glory be to Allah who did take His Servant for a journey by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Aqsa Mosque the precincts of which We have blessed, so that we might show him some of our signs. Indeed Allah is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing." [The Holy Qur'an, Surah al-Isra, Verse 1] Pay attention to this part "the precincts of which We have blessed" - refering to the land around it.
Tarek ,you are almost right , a lot of Israeli do not beleive in BIBI too, and he got lot of pressure from is right wing partners, but politics being what it is no Prime Minister is ever ready to loose is job. Between us it would be madness for Arabs to get mix up with IRAn or HAMAS,can you imagine what life would be for most of Moslem countries to adopt Iran or Hamas way of life .
No arab should believe Netanyaho about AlAqsa .He is well known in Israel and the Arab world of being a big liar,he even lied to his wife about his relation with other women. Now he is trying to fool the Palestinians by denying the israeli activities under the AlAqsa and in east Jerusalem ,which so obvious, when he felt the danger of the escalation of anger around the muslems world wide.MR PM you can lie ten times as usual but you cannot hide it for long simply because all know your past and present as well.
We as Jordanians do not trust Bibi, he is not respecting any peace treaties, especially the terms that gives Jordan role on the Holy Islamic places in Jerusalem, how can we trust him?
"Jerusalem simply never held any sanctity for the muslims themselves, but only for the Jews in their domain. It can be seen that significant Islamic interest in the Temple Mount does not precede the Six-Day War." Not sure what you've been reading mate. But if you look at an independent source like Wikipedia (not infallible, but better than what you've been reading) you'll see that the Temple Mount has probably been holy to Muslims from the start. Early Muslims prayed to it, before switching to Mecca. And by the 9th century at the latest Al Aqsa was regarded as the second mosque built, Mecca being the first. It makes sense, of course. Islam is ultimately derived from Judaism and Christianity, so, of course, Muslims are going to revere the Temple Mount and the mosque on it.
The WORLD-- Has seen Israel's/Netanyahu's approach to Jerusalem, the Goldstone report (action to suppress it/threats and smears to those who uphold it), PEACE and the Palestinians. And: We know who is in Netanyahu's government coalition. Now-- Why would someone, who ACTIVELY moves to suppress information and accountability, for Arab/Muslim deaths (not to mention past action regarding the "Temple Mount"/the settlements, peace, etc.)...think that he has any kind of credibility...that would make Arabs/Muslims (ANYONE for that matter)...believe him...when it comes to "'lies' about the Temple Mount?" Is this a joke? It Can Only Be Taken-- As a JOKE! Why? Because ACTIONS Speak Louder Than Words-- Netanyahu's (and his coalition's) ACTIONS...have spoken very CLEARLY...and LOUDLY! This Is What It Has Come To-- There is something that we citizens are doing (or are NOT doing)...for politicians/Netanyahu...to believe that WE citizens...are this stupid.
Jerusalem simply never held any sanctity for the muslims themselves, but only for the Jews in their domain. It can be seen that significant Islamic interest in the Temple Mount does not precede the Six-Day War. The 13th century Arab biographer Yakut noted: «Mecca is holy to muslims; Jerusalem is holy to the Jews». PLO leader Yassir Arafat and the Arabs claimed the Holy Jewish Temple Mount and Jerusalem based upon one extraordinarily huge lie told over and over again. The truth is simple Jerusalem is Jewish and should never be devided again as described at : http://xrl.us/bjheo
Personally, I've said before on this site that the greatest threat to Israel is not the phantom Iranian menace but the danger of turning Jordan and Egypt against it. Israel acts as if Jordan and Egypt don't matter, while relentlessly trying to assuage its own self-induced paranoia about Iran and Hamas. It's SO dangerous. Jordan and Egypt are both ruled by nervous, rather unstable pro-western regimes that are sitting on top of a powder keg of anti-Israel resentment. If either of those regimes fall, Israel will have a problem ten times worse than Iran or Hamas on its hands. Yet it does absolutely nothing to help Abdullah or Mubarak. Netanayahu will continue sucking up to his extremist right-wing constituency, because it's his only way to stay PM. Will Israel have any allies left in the Muslim world by the time he's gone? Who knows?
And this comes as a sudden surprise to Minister Ben-Eliezer. The Torah says: "...and they have eyes but don't see, they have ears but don't hear...God Morning Minister Ben-Eliezer
