Netanyahu's brother-in-law: Obama is an anti-Semite

Dr. Hagai Ben-Artzi told Army Radio the U.S. president will be long forgotten in a year or two.

By Barak Ravid and Haaretz Service Tags: Benjamin Netanyahu Barack Obama Israel news

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's brother-in-law Dr. Hagai Ben-Artzi on Wednesday called U.S. President Barack Obama an anti-Semite in an interview with Army Radio.

"It's not that Obama doesn't like Bibi," he referring to Netanyahu using his nickname. "He doesn't like the nation of Israel."

Netanyahu was quick to distance himself from Ben-Artzi's remarks, saying he completely disagrees with his brother-in-law.

Netanyahu said he has a deep appreciation for President Obama's commitment to Israel's security, which he has expressed many times, and also for the deep ties between the two countries.

Ben-Artzi was interviewed on Army Radio to provide background on the prime minister. He told the interview, "Look how symbolic it is that your son took part in and won a Bible quiz, whose theme this year is Jerusalem and its connection to Israel, and you, his father, are being tested and asked to prove the strength of the nation of Israel's ties to Jerusalem."

He went on to say that Obama's anti-Semitism stems from years of indoctrination by controversial preacher Rev. Jeremiah Wright, whom Obama distanced himself from during the election campaign.

"When there is an anti-Semitic president in the United States, it is a test for us and we have to say: We will not concede. We are a nation dating back 4,000 years, and you in a year or two will be long forgotten. Who will remember you? But Jerusalem will dwell on forever."

Ben-Artzi added that Netanyahu is aware of his views, but declined to say what the two discuss in private conversations.

On Tuesday a group of far-right activists announced their plan to hang hundreds of posters across the country depicting Obama under the headline "agent of the PLO." The banner is already on display in the office of National Union MK Michael Ben Ari.

Obama's speech to the Muslim world in Cairo last year stirred tension in Israel and the U.S. regarding the president's new policy towards the Middle East, and created the impression that he was biased towards Arab countries, as he began with the Arab saying "salaam alaykum."

Following the speech, Obama made a personal phone call to Netanyahu, guaranteeing that the U.S. would always support Israel.

That Obama is an anti-Semite to me is beyond any doubt. He also is the enemy of Israel, pretending to be "a real friend". But also not clear, whether Israeli politicians aren't enemies of Israel. The war they wedged on Gaza was useless: the rockets still fly as ever. The only thing that did change is the worldwide aggression-in-agreement against all Israeli and Jewish. If this war had had any real purpose, Islamists would be done with. As for Netahyahu & Co., all his promises before his election were empty words. Now we are to live with that.

Israel? 4000 years old? Since when is 2010 minus 1948 equal to 4000? More like 62 years, I'd say. These guys are starting to believe their own propaganda. All this "anti-semite" BS is so much for naught. Most of the people living in Israel are caucasian. The Palestinians are the "semites". Take a close look at Netanyahu. He's a white man. Case closed.

4000 years? I hate to break it to you, but in the geo-political spectrum( where it actually matters) Israel has been a country for exactly 62 years. Look at any map pre-1948, and that area will have the words, "Euro-PALESTINE" printed on it. I have no issue with the people of Israel, or people of the jewish faith. That being said, the government of said nation is a TERRORIST ORRGANIZATION. plain and simple. They have lied for decades about their nuclear weapons, and they are to date in violation of close to 80 UN resolutions.( The U.S. invaded Iraq because they were in violation of 2!!!) It is not "anti-semitic" to question the actions of the government of Israel. Anti-semitism is just a word they hide behind whenever they are criticized, and its getting old.

I agree. Bibi's brother has freedom to express his thinkings. Obama is not showing respect for the Holy Land that was promised by a Holy L-rd to the descendents of Israel. Any pressure upon Israel to give up their promise land, including Jerusalem, must be considered discrimination against the Jews and their rights to live in peace and security in their very own land.

"It's not that Obama doesn't like Bibi," ... "He doesn't like the nation of Israel." And how is that anti-semitism? Now, I'll accept that if he had said Obama "doesn't like the Jewish nation" then he might have a point. But Israel ISN'T "the Jewish nation", precisely because Israel ITSELF defines itself as "the state for the Jewish nation". To argue that there is no difference is to argue in such ever-decreasing circles that the word "Israel" ends up dissappearing up its own backside. Not that this would necessarily be a bad thing, but it isn't "anti-semitism" to say that. As the world's 2nd best swordsman once said: "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

"Behold, days are coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them," declares the LORD. (Jeremiah 31:31-32 UMMM YEAH. the covenant was broken long ago God?s promises of blessing to the nation of Israel was contingent upon their obeying His commandments. "the kingdom of God will be taken away from you, and be given to a nation producing the fruit of it" (Matt. 21:43). According to Jesus? own words, the crown promised to Israel's head would be placed upon another. I don't understand how christians support Israel either, So God's choosen people are the ones who killed your Savior Jesus Christ(pbuh), but Jesus(pbuh) is God's son? hmmm.. If someone killed my child I would not have them as my best friend; it would be the opposite.

'Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's brother-in-law Dr. Hagai Ben-Artzi on Wednesday called U.S. President Barack Obama an anti-Semite in an interview with Army Radio. "It's not that Obama doesn't like Bibi," he referring to Netanyahu using his nickname. "He doesn't like the nation of Israel." ' So if an 'anti-Semite' is someone who doesn't like the state of Israel, what's a word for someone who dislikes Jews? There is a difference. It's perfectly possible to like Mexicans but dislike the government of Mexico, for example. I like Russians -- can't say I think much of Russia. Etc. Just as an abstract proposition, it's perfectly possible I don't dislike Jews at all -- but think the state of Israel is evil incarnate. Now, if that makes me an anti-semite, fine -- but what's the word for someone who hates Jews whether they're in Israel or not?

Wake up and smell the bagels guys! what would YOU call a person who tries to divide a land that was given by God Himself to a group of people(who are the only people group that actually have a deed to land)thus showing a lack of regard for them? It is obvious that he isn't siding with Israel. No one has the right to tell Israel what to do, if someone tried to tell the US what to do, we would tell them to take a hike, yet our president (and his cabinet) are trying to force Israel to do something that they would never allow someone to do to us. (hopefully) Mr. O. may not have said the words that show he doesn't care for Israel, but his actions show it. How can he promise the Arabs to give them their state if it means letting Israel be divided (and unable to protect herself) and threatening to with hold money from Israel unless things go his way? Check out articles about all this and you will see that if Mr. O isn't anti-Semite, he is awfully close.

President Obama is the president of the United States of American, he was voted with a clear majority of the population, the more you name call him the more people turn against isral and the jews. He is also the first black president, the more you turn against him the more you create a backlask from the blacks who already blame the jews for their economic problems such as Lehman, Bear Stearns and Goldman Sachs to name a few. So weigh your words when you mention President Obama's name.

First, everyone knows or has some association with *someone* who has wacky views. A crazy aunt/uncle/brother-in-law, for instance. Or a nutty preacher you humor because it's politically expedient. SIDESHOW! The real issue is the policy difference: the US's (long-standing) position is that Israel must stop building settlements. Israel has avoided doing this for decades, with the US Congress allowing it to happen. The key question is whether or not the US Congress is now willing to force action on the issue. I doubt it. Why? Look at my own Senator, Lieberman. He's not the exception. Obama has an uphill fight ahead of him if he wants to "win" this battle. I doubt he will, for two reasons: 1) There will be immense political pressure on him to back down; and 2) He's backed down before, whereas I cannot recall him standing firm (no compromises, no capitulation). And hey, I voted for the guy. Though I can still say I prefer him to McCain, he's been quite disappointing.

So if someone doesn't agree with the policies of another nation that makes in this case anti-Semitic? Give me a break, was the United States anti-British or French when the British and French had a policy of annexing the Suez Canal? No, they were against that controversial policy. Just because the USA doesn't agree 100% of the time with Israeli policies doesn't make it anti-Semitic. If the Israeli government doesn't agree with the USA a 100% time does that make it anti-USA? Of course not it just means that they disagree on policy.

    misusing the word "antisemite"
    • Anonymousc
    • 17.03.10
    • 16:24

the word "antisemite" is used and misused as much as the word "genocide". If Gaza is a genocide, then Obama is an antisemite. If someone I don't like or agree with says something I don't like or agree with, he is an antisemite. If some people are killed, it is a genocide. What is antisemitism? What is genocide? For people who suffered true antisemitism and genocide, you do them an injustice by overusing and trivializing these words. Save the word "antisemite" for the Hitlers; save the word "genocide" for the psychopathic murderers of an entire nation. Israel is still ignorant about the Armenian genocide. You really need to read more books about this to learn what happened to these poor people. Hitler said no one remembers the Armenians (no one cared or went to save them), therefore it is safe to kill the Jews (no one cared to went to save them, the Jews). And the next time, who will? You are insulting people who are not antisemitic.

Anti-Semitic is a good word it reminds the Israelis? that they are second generation warfare recipients . ?And the statement s ?We are a nation dating back 4000 years ?the Doctor Hagai acts as the Jews invented the world. Long before the Jewish nation 4000 years early the American Indian had a nation big deal. We are not talking about the past we are taking about the present. Anti-Semitism is spreading but it is a good word now. The Jewish lobbyist are unhappy because unlike the Senates Obama does cow tow to them.

The reason Israel needs the 2 state solution is so that they do not become the minority in their own country. The Pals have a much higher birthrate. The educated or more advanced cultures have less kids, so they can afford to do more for them...College, Healthcare... The 3rd world Countries have more kids. They can not afford to educate them and have higher child mortality death rates. They breed more kids so that someone is around to take care of them when they get old. Bibi knows that a One State will be an Arab Majority State.

I'm so sick of the knee jerk response of "anti-semite". When this label is whipped out automatically, without thinking, it unfortunately lumps true anti-semites /anti-zionists with anyone who dares to criticize the actions of the Jewish state, Jewish organizations, or individual Jews (your pick, according to the situation). Obama is obviously pursuing his own agenda at this point -- an agenda that I think is mistaken and wrong and will not lead to peace -- but he is not an antisemite. Perhaps he thinks that he can topple Bibi's coalition. Someone should brief him on the ins and outs of Israeli politics. It's highly unlikely that a coalition lead by Kadima or Labor would be any more pliable on the issue of building in existing Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem. If Obama wants to change the government maybe he should work through the Eida HaCharedit and Neturei Karta. They understand how dangerous new apartment buildings in Ramat Shlomo are ..

Not many Israeli Jews wanted Barak Hussein Obama to become President of the United States. I find it amazing that he tricked and deceived 80% of the Jews in the United States into voting for him. I will never forget that photograph of Obama at the Western Wall (in East Jerusalem, by the way,) with a kippah on his head, sticking a piece of paper into the cracks. That was BEFORE the November, 2008, election. We will not see that happening again. By the way, I am one of the twenty per cent who did not fall for the ruse.

because it is not a heuristic term. It is making a race or ethnic question, referring to the Arab/Hebrew speaking people of the old ME. So now what shall we call the nasty antidemocratic, violent and intolerant people, generalising and demonising people of different ethnic background? Xenophobia is I think a much more descript term, that can apply to Islamophobia and the older term ?anti-Semitism?. It will depict the true nature of the ailment, it is fear!

Born of a Muslim father with a stepfather also Muslim, educated in a madrassa in Indonesia and an ardent supporter of Rev. Wright whose church he attended for 20 years, and Farakham, it would not surprise me if Obama were an Antisemite. His speech in Cairo said the US was based on Muslim ideas, which is a very weird thing for a US president to say. His bow to the King of Saudi Arabia was unusual as well. As for the money the US sent to ISrael, Obama has already halted any payments. US taxpayers complaining about this money might want to check.

President Obama is a "politician" everything he does is for his personal ambitions. Words are meaningless without the actions to support them. Every other Muslim country in the Middle East has no desire for Israel to exist and any negative charactures of Mohammed are dealt with by threats of murder. But tell the truth about Obama's actions are more of an insult to you then what the Muslims do in murdering and terrorizing civilians. May the truth become evident and your desire to know the truth verses speech.

Obama likes to be tough with his allies, and then make nice with the enemies... He is a weak Jimmy Carter.. Netanyahu was just signaling that the US-Israeli relationship is waning, and he is right. Leaning on big brother US is no longer in Israel's best interest. Nor, is it the US. The US could not stop Iran from building nukes, and they merely applied pressure on Israel not to do anything, though not much could be done. Abandoning the peace process is in Israel's best interest. They were merely giving up land with less security. It is in the US best interest to have Israel exist in the Mideast (democracy and free-market capitalism). However, the cost was getting too high. Israel must find another way to maintain its existence. It would be good for all...

    • Bob

An anti-Semite seems to be someone, who doesn't like oppression. Real Jews are typical anti-Semites. Marek Edelman for example said: ?To be a Jew means always being with the oppressed and never the oppressors.? Imam Ali (a.s) was another typical anti-Semite, because he wrote into his testament: "Oppose the oppressor and support the oppressed." Unlike his brother Hermann, Albert Göring was an anti-Semite, because he opposed the policies of the Nazis: http://www.auschwitz.dk/Albert.htm The Nazis were oppressors. Being against them, means, that you are an anti-Semite. It's fascinating, how words change their meaning. I remember, that there was a time, when anti-Semitism was regarded as evil. People obviously misunderstood something then. An anti-Semite is someone, who believes in the dignity and human rights of his fellow human beings, independent of skin colour and religion. Anti-Semites are opposed to ethnic nationalism, intolerance and bigotry.

Ben Artzi should learn the meaning of humility (as a practicing believing Jew, this should certainly be one of his moral values; he just forgot...). Obama has nothing against Jews (many of his top adivsers, including the White House Chief of Staff, openly declare belonging to that faith)and has time and again declared his support to Israel as a country and Nation. It is however conceivable that Obama dislikes Ben Artzi and his ilk as well as non-entities disguised as statesmen such as Bibi. Neither of them really represent Israel and certainly not the Jews as a whole. Most sane people dislike them. So do I. That makes me not an antisemite and it doesn't make Obama one either. As a matter of fact, it probably makes him a true Israel lover because he is able to foresee the dark future that Ben Artzi & Co. might bring upon Israel if they are not reigned in.

If you are speaking to an Arabic audience it's only natural to begin with an Arabic greeting. It creates no other impression. What I found shocking about Obama's speech was that he made Israel sound like a Holocaust reparation, forgetting that Jews have a 4,000 year link to Israel. Making it sound like only a 60 year link is akin to those who say Arabs are paying the price for European Christian anti-Semitism.I see no reason why Obama's attempt to bring the Arab world closer to America is an either/or situation. Arabs and Israelis both have to learn to live together in the same region.
