Netanyahu: I hope Palestinians 'get a grip,' renew peace talks

PM says renewal of negotiations is important to Israel, but is 'no less important to the Palestinians.'

By Barak Ravid Tags: Benjamin Netanyahu Barack Obama Israel news Middle East peace

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hit out Sunday at the Palestinian Authority over its demand for a complete Israeli settlement freeze before embarking on any fresh peace talks, saying he hoped the Palestinians would "get a grip" and drop this precondition.

"We've done things that have not been done until today, although while we are taking steps toward negotiations, we have encountered preconditions demanded by the Palestinian side, which were never demanded before," Netanyahu said at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting.

The prime minister's comments came after visiting U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said on Saturday that Israel was making "unprecedented" concessions on West Bank settlement construction.

But the Palestinians on Saturday rejected Israel's offer to dial down settlement construction in the West Bank, rather than bringing it to a complete halt.

Netanyahu told the cabinet meeting: "Beginning negotiations is important to us, but it is no less important to the Palestinians. We are committed to negotiations, and we hope that the Palestinians will lift the precondition."

The prime minister also told the cabinet that Clinton had decided that U.S. President Barack Obama's Mideast envoy, George Mitchell, would extend his current visit to the region by a number of days in order to bridge the differences between the sides.

Israel is making a concerted effort to renew the peace talks, Netanyahu said.

If Israel keeps destroying the possibility of a Palestinian state then at some point they will be compelled to make Palestinians citizens of Israel or many of them citizens and that would include Jerusalem. That would lead to Israel quickly having a large Arab-Israeli popuation that would easily become at minimum 25%-30% of the population. They will then want the laws of the country to change and might team with religious Jews to accomplish that. Who knows what could happen? I think the Israeli Government needs to make sense. The Palestinians can't be further stateless and there. Withdraw and end the darn occupation. Stop building in East Jerusalem and using religion improperly.

There has been absolutely no movement in their negotiations with Iran Syria wants the Golan returned unconditioally Pals only want Israel to make concessions, never stating what they're willing to give in return Just to let you know, neither Hamas or Fatah have altered the stipulations in their charters or covenants that call for the destruction of Israel, though the PLO promised to do that as part of the Oslo Accords The only way to talk to Lebanon is through Iran, since they are ruling Lebanon through Hezbollah Obama has more than enough on his plate, Stimulus plan hasn't stimulated, Unemployment almost at 10%, Cash for Clunkers was a one shot deal, auto sales have plunged, let's not forget Obamacare, which he's trying to jam down the throats of an unwilling public AND it looks that the Dems are about to lose three states come tomorrow

You steal someone?s land and I guarantee you they will be very angry. Why should anyone sit down and talk to you when they know it will be a lie and a joke. No! Why should anyone sit down and talk to you to give more land to make you to talk peace. No! You could care less about peace which the world knows and understands. So let?s make you a complete pharaoh. A role you relish and love! So Bibi lets get a grip!

Israel already is an established homeland for the Jewish people. She is a sovereign nation. No one will give a homeland to Palestinian terrorists unless they renounce terrorism. It's foolish to encourage the Palestinians to take a hardline stance when negotiations will easily solve the borders issue. Due to their years of embracing and sanctioning terrorist murder, Palestinians now negotiate from a position of weakness. Why make it weaker? They must compromise. Refusing to enter peace negotiations only delays Palestinian statehood and increases the misery of the Palestinians who would otherwise benefit from a country of their own.

Under any reasonable reading of the Roadmap, the US and Israel have thrown away all US credibility. Over a billion Arabs and Muslims can read and see that. How and why should the US or Israel have any credibility in negotiations after openly and blatantly abrogating the Roadmap and then trying to spin it so badly? Why should the Palestinians believe Israel would keep any promise made in a negotiation? Why should the PA believe any US promise after being lied to? Why should Iran not just lie about its nuclear intentions. If the US gives assurances, why should the US be believed? We just allowed Israel to openly disregard its written promises to the US as undertaken in the Roadmap. What's the point of coming to the table if nothing said there can be believed?

For the past 60 years, the Palestinians continue to make the same mistake over and over. Their mistake is rooted in a fantasy that a great outside power will deliver them Israel on a silver platter. So it was in 1948, the Palis rejected UN partition plan thinking the Arab states would destroy Israel for them. Big mistake! Did they learn from it? Nope, too many false prophets feeding the Palestinian fantasy... Nasser, Sadam, Nassrallah, Ahmadinijad. A pity for Palestinian children being born into a society of fanatics, not capable to "get a grip" on reality.

America is a biased party...they should not be allowed to have a monopoly over the peace process. It is time to try something new and get the international community involved.

What is there left to win in negotiations? Are the Palestinians supposed to accept some form of token limited sovereignty over small isolated parcels of the worst land the Israelis don't want for settlements within the 67 borders? The Palestinians are not stupid. A non-contiguous, semi-autonomous mini statelet begging for water and freedom of movement would be the worst outcome for Palestine. But time is on their side. The two state illusion is long, long gone. Eventually the wall will come down (history teaches). Eventually there will be one state for everyone. When that happens - when all in that state are equal citizens living with dignity and freedom - then "terrorism" will just be a distant memory. We are all one people. Peace

Only if the settlements really expand will there be a deal
    • Scott
    • 01.11.09
    • 19:20

The Palestians were offered the best deal they ever could get by PM Olmert and they turned it down. Now they won't negotiate until settlement building stops while they never used this as a precondition before. The new construction is only within existing settlements contiguous with Israel that they will keep. Olmert offered land swaps to compensate for the small area of these settlements and they still wouldn't make a deal. They are lucky they weren't all expelled to Jordan after the 67 war with Israel taking all the west bank. The only way the Palestians will make peace is if they think their territory is getting smaller and smaller by connecting outlying settlements to other settlements. The settlements should expand.

We begin to be a minority in all of historic Palestine by 2017. Maybe it is us who must be terrified that there are no peace talks and that there is no peace on the horizon. Peace NOW!!! (maybe)

    Preconditions

    • 01.11.09
    • 19:13

Everyone seems to support or renounce preconditions when it suits them. Will Israel then talk to Hamas without the precondition that it recognize Israel and renounce violence? Haven't they also made unprecedented concessions, such as accepting a state on pre-1967 borders? Of course these do not mesh at all with settlements, because those, by definition, are within the pre-1967 borders. I think it's reasonable to demand such a thing, but only if they demand it of themselves as well. No preconditions means zero preconditions.

in quick Negociations,Or real NEGOCIATION at all, but in an ENDLESS SHOW,that have already taking some years since 1967, my guest is that it will be 2067 before we could see a slight progress, that is IF there are still a bit Dunam to negociate on, or the country had become a BINATIONAL STATE. Israel woould like Hamas to Accept and HONOURED AGREEMENTS that have been negociated and agreed by Israelis and PA, yet when it come to deal with Syrian Negociations, he is asking the Syrians to start the PROCESS all over AGAIN, that is without any PRECONDITIONS.

Since when the losers dictate conditions and terms to the victorious? The so-called West Bank is a land that the Romans took from the Jews and not from the Arabs. That today so many Arabs are living on this land is thanks to the creativity of the Jewish people, who, when they returned to their land, have attracted Arabs who were seeking jobs from every corner of the Middle East. This land belonged to the Jews, who were captured by the Romans. It was never an Arab State. Even today, Jordan is not a naturally evolving country, but it was created by the British

The US should show leadership and stop appeasing the Jewish lobby. Demand Israel stop settlements, give Israel a timeframe and if no change take decisive action. This is truly disgusting.

So would you if you were PM of one of the tiniest states out! Those wishing Israel were a huge colonial, racist state of course refuse to see that Jews have lived here at least as long as anyone. Hebron for example, in the "West Bank" has the world's oldest Jewish settlement. Jews lived there non-stop till the present - since thousands of years before the advent of Christianity and Islam! How many are willing to admit that truth? How many can admit that ethnic cleansing of Jews from Judea and Samaria is the oldest and most repeated, yet still the most fashionable, ethnic cleansing advocated? When you see how tiny this land truly is and see that Jews and Arabs are related, with Arab states taking up most all of the Middle East, you realize that Israel has very little to offer at all. When it is seen that Pals also call themselves Arabs and that most of Palestine is truly in Jordan, you see that Bibi's offers have been amazingly generous - probably too much so! Arabs have PLENTY land!
