Netanyahu: Abbas, let's relaunch peace talks now

Netanyahu at GA: Strengthening Jewish identity can no longer be task of Diaspora Jews.

WASHINGTON D.C. - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday addressed thousands of North American Jews at the General Assembly of the Jewish Federations of North America, where he urged Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to relaunch peace talks immediately.

Abbas announced last week that he would not run for another term in an election scheduled for January, citing deadlocked efforts to revive peace talks.

"We should not place preconditions for holding talks, such preconditions have never been set in 16 years," Netanyahu said, referring to the Palestinian demand that Israel completely halt construction in West Bank settlements before talks can resume.

"No Israeli government has been so willing to restrain settlement activity as part of an effort to relaunch peace talks," the prime minister added, addressing Abbas by name and saying "let us seize the moment, let us relaunch peace talks immediately."

"Peace between Israel and its neighbors could spare our children the horrors of war," he continued. "Peace could also usher in a new era of tremendous economic progress for the benefit of everyone in the Middle East."

"I think people are beginning to see that we are eager to achieve peace with our neighbors," he said, "especially the Palestinians."

"My goal is not negotiations for the sake of negotiations. My goal is to achieve a permanent peace treaty between Israel and the Palestinians - and soon," Netanyahu declared.

Referring to the Palestinian demand in previous rounds of peace talks that Israel grant Palestinian refugees from around the world the right of return to the homes in Israel from which they were expelled, Netanyahu stressed that "they must abandon the fantasy of flooding Israel with refugees, give up irredentist claims to the Negev and Galilee, and declare unequivocally that the conflict is finally over."

"It will take years for the spirit of peace to permeate levels of Palestinian society," he added.

"We're willing to make great concessions for peace but there can be no concessions on Israel's security. We have to ensure that weapons do not flow into the Palestinian areas in the West Bank, which overlooks Tel Aviv and surrounds Jerusalem."

Netanyahu also addressed the issue of the recent vote at the United Nations General Assembly on a UN-sponsored report which accused Israel of committing war crimes in Gaza last winter. The Goldstone report was adopted by the 192-member General Assembly in by a vote of 114-18. Netanyahu thanks the U.S. for voting against the resolution that called for the Goldstone findings to be "credibly and independently" investigated. He thanked U.S. President Barack Obama for "resolutely opposing this twisted UN resolution."

The prime minister went on to applaud the U.S. Congress vote, which preceded the UN debate, for condemning the "biased report."

Netanyahu began his address by saying that the Jews had brought "at least three big ideas to civilization: monotheism, the belief that all people have innate rights that transcend the power of kings, and the vision of universal peace."

His speech was briefly interrupted by a female protester who yelled out urging a lifting of Israel's seige on Gaza. But the prime minister didn't break his stride and quickly resumed his address, saying "I was better received at the UN." The protester was escorted out of the hall.

The prime minister then addressed the Jewish communities outside Israel, saying that "strengthening Jewish identity can no longer be a task exclusively for the Diaspora. It is increasingly the responsibility of the Jewish State."

"Over a decade ago, I was proud to be the first Prime Minister to allocate state funds to bolster Jewish identity outside of Israel. And I assure you that in my second term, I intend to do even more," he continued.

In Israel, a last-minute scheduling of Netanyahu's White House meeting, after Israeli officials said over the past several weeks that Netanyahu hoped to see Obama, was widely seen as a sign of strained relations between the two leaders.

However, Netanyahu's media adviser Nir Hefetz said Monday following the address that "on our side there is no tension. Molcho, the prime minister's special envoy sat with [U.S. Middle East envoy] George Mitchell's team earlier today and they prepared the [Netanyahu-Obama] meeting. Naturally it will focus on the Palestinian issue and we hope that the meeting will strengthen and deepen the channel of communication between the prime minister and President Obama, and that it will prompt the resumption of peace talks."

Agree to stop building for 6months, to many in the West it looks like Israel wants land more than peace and don't understand why this is a problem since all parties agreed with Roadmap afew years ago. For the Zionist and settlers land is more important since peace deal would likely end their dream of a greater Israel, so their ideal of a deal is to remove all Muslims west of Jordan.

Does anyone else see the massive hypocrisy here? Bibi with open arms and a straight face talks about 'no preconditions' then in the same speech says (1) Right of return is a 'fantasy' (2) no claims for Negev and Galilee (3)No weapons in Palestine ...Israel's security etc etc in other word no true nation state...blah blah. These are not 'preconditions eh Bibi? Na, they're just 'unmentionables'.....hahaha what a terrible liar and manipulator. It is clear to anyone with more than a single neuron that Bibi seeks the peace process only for the endless cover it provides to Israel's unbridled colonial expansion. Israel has never, EVER negotiated in good faith and without preconditions. What a sad joke....

When the Charter/Platform of Fatah calls for the "liberation" of "Palestine", i.e. from the River to the Sea, of the Zionist entity, by all means necessary, how could Abbas reconcile this it with accepting Jewish Israel to continue to exist...??

Most of just don't give a crap other than most Israeli policies are detrimental the strategic interest of the USA. What an great bunch of allies; statesman like Bibi and Lieberman. Foprtunately, only a small percentage of Americans share Mark Lincoln's refusal to to distinquish between Iran and Israel. As a non-hypenated american (not a jewish-american, not an arab american, not an african-american, not a moslem-american, etc, etc, etc), I recognize Israel's right to exist and to live in security. I recognize that Israel is not dedicated to the destruction of Iran or any other nation. I recognize that Israel has provided moral and political support to american interests throughout the world. I recognize that the Iranian and palestinian leadership have encouraged their people to shout "death to america" at every opportunity and have killed american citizens on many occasions. The person who used the name "Mark Lincoln" either hates america or is nothing more than a total fool.

You response is so arrogant and typically 'Western' in its ignorance and apathy. You do not have a comittment to the Jewish people: if you want to assimilate, no one can stop you and no one has the right. But for the rest of us who want to maintain our identity, you words are murderous. Mass Murderous to be precise. Alan Dershowitz wrote a beautiful book about how the Jews will not even exist within 100 years due to people like yourself. If you want to engage in a holocaust, go ahead. But there are some of us so devoted to our people, with courage and tenacity, in the face of anti-semitism and self-hating Jews who mock their own people (that would be you), we stay strong and forge ahead as we have done for 2,500 years. Assimilation is the enemy to any identity: Tolerance is the sophisticated choice of the intelligent, more learned individuals of humanity. You don't even tolerate your own: how on earth could anyone view you in a positive light if you support killing your own?

"In each case the leadership of Iran and Israel has chosen to be defiant even though it is ultimately very damaging to their nation." In Israel's case, it's a matter of Jews living on lands they were only cleansed from for 19 years. There is a ridiculous and unrealistic demand that they stop building in communities with over a half a million people. In Iran's case, it was in breach of an NPT treaty it signed for 8 years before being caught. Would you also like to draw parallels between a mass murderer who was captured, tried, found guilty and incarcerated with a kidnap victim tied to a wall in a hidden cell in some murderous freak's basement?

Sound reasoning is not the language the Palestinians understand. The Palestinian street was poisoned for a long time from the cradle to the grave. Abbas is not the one the Palestinians like or more importantly understand. No, this conflict is well established as a religious conflict. It leaves no room for reason. The Palestinians needs reasons to understand that Peace is better than war. But, the whole thing for the Palestinians is not only what they are taught to believe but how Islam was presented to them to believe as holy. That is the job of the many 'madrasses'. The favuorite school of education for many Muslims. Netanyahu said that security is all that Israel & the Jews wants and how many more times this to be said yet again for the world to understand !? Israel was created out of necessity that was created by a much blind world. Its existence is an atonement for what was horribly wrong ! When the world will understand its history !

Let's face something American Jewry opposed going to war in Iraq. The majority did. Israel is very hawk-like, war-like. The Old Testament/TANACH says "thou shalt not kill". Are the Israeli leaders in a position to preach morality to the Jews of America? Are the Jews of Israel so moral because they simply inhabit a certain part of the Earth. Does where someone live make them Adon or Elohim or Yahweh. Such concepts are surely midieval in nature, not modern Western notions of civilization. It's not part of the enlightenment. It doesn't matter if you are Jewish, Christian, or whatever if someone says the flock must be backward to be like him, and dictate to them, I would say, "Take a hike!".

bringing security for the rest of the world? Unfortunately he never understood this international equilibrium with the continual unrest in the Middle East and tensions between the West and the Middle East permeates with an unsettled comprehensive agreement. How many times does he have to be told this over and over? Perhaps he now sees the necessity of a two state solution, but his inaction regarding halting settlements which grow and hinder the contiguous Palestinian state he is talking about in the West Bank and Gaza, negates the sincerity of his intentions. At least Israel can halt settlement construction until the borders are finalized. Perhaps President Abbas realizes the inauthentic gestures and sees no value in resuming talks for now. Only the U.S. can convince him otherwise. President Obama's Nobel prize should not be wasted in time for the December ceremony in Oslo, so perhaps a compromise can be reached by all parties.

Abbas should not talk to Israel if it refuses to prove it wants peace by not building more settlements. They built a wall and annexed land. What's the point of launching talks when the settlements are not ending. It's common sense. Israel is just pretending it is sincere in front of the West and America. Where is the sincerity when you build settlements? I don't see what use it would be to talk to a government that builds settlements. Until Israel shows it's not trying to abuse the minority and harm the minority, why should the other side deal with them? Israel doesn't operate in good faith.

In each case the leadership of Iran and Israel has chosen to be defiant even though it is ultimately very damaging to their nation. The world is finding it very hard to believe anything Netanyahu or the Supreme Dictator say. This is not the fault of the world.

He should not beg Abbas at every opportunity to resume peace talks. Abbas should be begging him . However , the easiest way to get Abbas to talk is start building with a frenzy. Abbas will realize every day he doesn't talk he loses another 2% of the territory. Turkey is drifting away because Muslim fundamentalism has gripped the country as in Ft Hood. If it can happen in good USA- why not in Turkey ? We must come to our senses and realize that Arabs will always hate us and strive to destroy and only when we show them strength, will they respect and treat us a worthy opponents. Even Abdullah from Jordan has become a Muslim fanatic. It is evident in all his public proclamations- This is fact. Israel cannot change this trend. However ,the more we surrender , the more they tread on us and dare to strike us.

America has its own warcrimes to worry about.

America is not all that concerned for Israel. By voting against the Goldstone report, America is looking after its own war criminals! ie Bush and Cheney! AND don't forget the White Phosphorus shells, found in Gaza following Israel's Cast Lead devastation, were said to have the inscription, "made in America!"

Except for the fact that Netanyahu seems to be ready to hasten the speed of peace talks... there is absolutely nothing new. Palestinians will never accept to recognize Israel as a Jewish Entity (it is not to them to do so). Moreover, if Israel is so concerned about security, its leaders would undoubtedly understand Palestine's concerns (after all, it is the Occupied territories that have been the most battered since the intifadas... not Israel). Therefore, accepting a demilitarized state will never happen from the Palestinians. Same old same old... but you can tell Israel is growing concerned about "Big-daddy's" unwillingness to be as blind as others were before...

How many preconditions for peace talks has Israel had? "We said we would slightly slow down robbing you of your land and no other government has ever been so kind to you"

3 Big Ideas? Err really? None of those are Jewish are they?

Akhenaten came up with the idea of monotheism, which is probably where the Hebrews got it from. The idea that the rule of kings is not infinite. That's 6th century BC Greece and democracy really. I don't think that's anything to do with Judaism really. Particularly since regal power has usually had some effective limits. People have always been free to kill kings they really didn't like. World peace? Is Bibi having a laugh? There have always been utopian thinkers who've dreamed of world peace. Would be nice if Bibi showed a bit more interest in it.

How does Mr. Bibi define peace? This man even when he tries to give signs and gestures to others can't even do it in the right way!!

I will believe he is sincere when he stops settlement building. Then, when he has shown his bona fides the world can take his statement seriously. Bibi Netanyahu has a LONG record of dishonesty about his positions.

...can achieve peace. But you are strong - and you've been strong for 40 years. So why is there no peace? Perhaps it has something to with the way you treat people, and make sure they stay weak? Perhaps strength is not the only way to peace? What about a touch of wisdom and common decency?

6 months after Netanyahu's election, everything is worse on Israel's dashboard - Turkey is drifting away, US relations are not smooth, Goldstone is on his way to UNSC, Iran is more powerful. Only thing Netanyahu has kept alive is his coalition. He probably believes his job ends there. Can the rest of Israel afford to believe that too?
