Yeshiva student charged with assault on racial grounds
Raziel Azulay from Tiberias accused of attacking and severely injuring Arab man for meeting with Jewish women.
A Yeshiva student was charged with assault on Sunday, for attacking an Arab man in the city of Tiberias in July.
Raziel Azulay, a 19-year-old yeshiva student from Tiberias, committed the assault based on the victim's racial background and broke his victim's skull during the incident, according to the indictment.
The details of the incident were discussed during the hearing, which took place on Sunday in Nazareth District Court. The attack occurred at a gas station in Tiberias on July 21. The plaintiff, his brother and a gas station attendant met with two Jewish female friends.
Azulay arrived in the station and was infuriated by the meeting between the Arab men and the Jewish woman. He shouted at the plaintiff and said that "Arabs should be burned so they won't reach Tiberias."
Later, Azulay returned holding a blunt object and started attacking the plaintiff, hitting his head with the object. As he was lying on the ground, Azulay kicked his head and face and then ran away.
The plaintiff was taken in critical condition to Poriya hospital in Tiberias, and then to Rambam hospital in Haifa after his situation deteriorated. He suffered severe injuries to his head and face, including a fractured skull.
Justice Benjamin Arbel decided to extend Azulay's remand. In his decision, Arbel wrote that "the alleged crimes are extremely severe… The motive in the case was racism, which should be uprooted completely."
Azulay's defense attorney said his client denied the allegation and had not been present at the crime scene at the time of the incident.
This is the second case of assault on racial grounds that occurred in Tiberias. In 2009 a 20-year-old man from the Arab village of Majd al-Krum was attacked while walking on the Tiberias promenade. Investigation showed that the attackers assaulted the man because of his ethnicity.
