A federal judge has set bail at $1 million for the chief executive of a labor recruiting company accused of importing and exploiting 400 workers from Thailand.

Forty-five-year-old Mordechai Orian, head of Los Angeles-based Global Horizons Manpower Inc., was ordered Wednesday to be held in federal custody until he can raise the money.

KITV reports federal prosecutors claim Orian, an Israeli national, is a flight risk. They had sought to keep him in custody until his trial, and they plan to appeal.

Orian is accused in what the FBI calls the largest human-trafficking case charged in U.S. history.

He was indicted last week on charges that he lured the workers with false promises of lucrative jobs, then confiscated their passports, failed to honor their employment contracts and threatened to deport them.

His public relations agency has said he complied with the FBI in negotiating his surrender in Honolulu.

So an Israeli surrenders to U.S. authorities for what the FBI (not Ha'aretz) calls one of the "largest human trafficking cases in history," and it's anti-semitism. Isn't it just a case of a man being arrested for being suspected of a heinous crime?

.. but will be extradited to the US if he reaches Israel. However, why go thru the complication? Just increase the bail amount, which I am sure will happen on appeal.

... that some responsible agency took this in hand... it is by no means the frist case of abuse of foreign workers connected with Israeli entrepreneurs.

    #1&#2 - Anti-Semitic? Jew Bashing?

The article never mentions Orian's religion or ethnic group. What makes it anti-Semitic? Was the article published a few weeks ago about the Israeli arrested in the U.S. for mutliple murders in Flint anti-Palestinean and Pal bashing? And the headlines do not say it was the biggest human trafficking case. Rather, the text quoted the FBI as saying it was the "the largest human-trafficking case charged in U.S. history". If you are aware of a larger charged U.S. case, give us a link to a reliable source that documents that larger occurance.

It has been our unfortunate fate that renagade "Jews" who reach positions of power and finanace have the power to do such damage. That anyone with a Jewish name regardless of the fact they may not ever have been exposed to anything remotely resembling Jewish values or attatched to a Jewish community have the power to besmirch an entire people and faith."every Jew writes the history of their people for good or for bad " says an old proverb. We are always going to be judged collectively and that should be drilled into every caring Jews head and in every generation. And for those Jews who were exposed to the values of Judaism and still chose to ignore them I can only hope there is a special place in hell for them for all the harm they bring upon us.

Sorry but a bail of USD1 Mio does not support the screaming headlines of 'biggest human trafficking case'!

Haaretz as usual loves to bash Jews!! Biggest human trafficking case of 400 workers sounds to me like a lot of nonsense!! How many Mexicans are being trafficked per annum? And no organisation ever send more than 400 people over to the US from Mexico during their time as human traffickers? Haaretz should stick to better journalism rather then to anti semitic sensationalism!! The judge supports my view that this was a serious criminal case but based on the bail it is just one of many cases and not the case of the century as Haaretz wants us to believe!!

If you had been following the story, it is the biggest case of trafficking ever charged against someone in the U.S. according to the U.S. Justice Dept. The bail doesn't is only an indicator of the person's flight risk vs. the crime. that is what a judge looks at. Also, I don't think there are any Mexicans involved in this case. Most are from Thailand. You should read up on a subject before you open your mouth.

Based on the expressed views of talkbackers some Jews appear to think the chosen ones are above such things. This Jewish newspaper I believe enjoys making them earth bound again.
