Israel has had its turbulent elections in the past but it is doubtful if any ever plumbed the depths of moral and ideological bankruptcy as the present campaign for the 19th Knesset. Seasoned politicians and novices alike wander aimlessly among the parties in search of any advantageous home, while the party leaders regard them as no more than merchandise to be plucked from a market stall.
