With a headline and a correction like this, you really ought to release the article without requiring a subscription.

This survey is very provocative and encourages people looking for yet another reason to accuse Israelis of being racist to believe it as true. If you were to do a survey and ask Palestinians if they would want to/like to live next to/with Israeli Jews, or share a vote, I'm sure it would reveal similar statistics on the other side of the coin. It is clear that both sides are living in their own fear and I'm not sure this survey helps lessen that fear. If you are already going to do this survey at least do one the other way.

Or did the authors of this study fail to notice that the Arabs have already oppressed and expelled all the Jews from their nations? Did they notice that when a Jewish person converts to another religion or decides to live a secular western lifestyle, their family is sad and won't speak with them - but when a Muslim person converts to another religion or decides to be secular (especially a woman), their family kills them. On the other hand, according to the Chereidi, we would need four sets of roads, not two: one for Jewish men, one for Arab men, another for Jewish women and still another for Arab women. There is plenty of intolerance to go around, but it's simply wrong to suggest that Jews have a worse attitude than Arabs when it comes to living together peacefully. They have the same exact opinions - if not worse ones. At least most Jews aren't suggesting we exterminate all the Arabs - they call for this to happen every day.

The way this is presented is biased and ridiculous. Biased because it used well known technics of disinformation: you can always communicate by saying "30% of people support this" or by saying "70% of people support the opposite". The effect is obviously very different. It is easy to obtain what you want by formulating questions as closed ones where people have to say "yes" or "no". It is even easier to have what you expect by asking the questions to people that are not directly concerned... Second, it is ridiculous, using terms like "apartheid" for qualifying "discrimination" attitudes or even "ordinary racist positions" is a way to confuse people with very different categories. Apartheid refers to official state policies and laws to segregate people according to race, religion or other means. Actually, to my knowledge, only some muslim countries enforce in their laws the fact that non-muslims or simply women are not entitled the same rights than others (Saudi Arabia being the most extreme case), which is obviously close to "apartheid". (Shar'ia laws are discriminating, and once they would become the basis for the state law - the goal of many Islamic movements - they will turn into a system of Apartheid by definition). Discrimination based on individual behaviors unfortunately exist in most countries and more so in many countries than in Israel! This is certainly not something to be proud of, but again not and Israel exception. By saying "Israelis support an Apartheid state" you obviously cross a line where you turn groups or individual behavior into a kind of essential characteristic of the Israelis as a whole. (in fact, doing the same kind of study in many countries you could likely came to the same conclusion and say e.g. "Most french people favorable to an Apartheid state.." etc..). Moving from (let's say) "Most israelis (avoiding "jews" here) would be favourable to discrimination measures" to "Most Israelis Jews would support apartheid regime in Israel" becomes then a way to convey the idea that Jews (how much ?) are ontologically "bad" (this is their very essence) as they would be collectively associated with a totally ominous concept as "apartheid". This is dangerous as then it is nurturing the idea that Israel as a state and jews in general are by nature "evil" creations. Once you are there then you open the justification to eradicate a country or indiscriminately kill people only based on what they are. I hope I am clear enough here. This article is a pity, considering the absurd poll it is based on. A such tinny sample (500 persons interviewed) can clearly not be considered as representative of the opinion of 8 millions Israeli, and is therefore totally meaningless. Moreover, we have no idea of how the persons interviewed have been selected. I assume that the opinions concerning the Arabs in Tel Aviv and Hebron are significantly different, so unless I have the proof the sample was truly representative of the Israeli diversity, this article remains a total absurdity to me; and I hope to the majority of the readers.

Apartheid? Most Israelis would support pograms against the Palestinians because - as children - they were taught to hate and demonize them. Look at the graffiti Israeli children are scrawling on the walls in Hebron. If Iran is attacked the destabilization that ensues will bring down the Arab dictatorships supported by the West and Israel will become isolated in a hostile Middle East. The West will probably abandon Israel because it will still need oil. Israel needs to start building bridges now and tell Netanyahu to go f?ck himself.

Last night in Melbourne Australia i attended a beautiful concert by Duo Amal made up of two Israelis, one Jewish one Palestinian It was very moving And i could only think of all that untapped potential in Palestians and the untapped goodness in the Jewish eeople. Why are so many of you hating on Levy? He is simply reporting results. Also, it is a proper analysis, over 500 randomly selected members of an already small group is enough to conduct a proper survey.

Let us assess the methodology, the questions posed, the raw data.

After reading the article carefully, here are the 10 things I learned: 1. Levy's title for the article is intentionally misleading. I hope you didn't fall for it. The title suggests that Jews would have loved to live in an apartheid state, right? But later it becomes clear that Jews would might react in such non-democratic ways ONLY if they were forced to annex the West Bank, which they obviously don't want to do, not by their own accord. 2. Jews seem to be against the idea of annexing the West Bank, though this survey didn't bother looking into this question (which is odd). You can still find in the article indication that they don't, if you read it carefully enough. 3. If forced to annex the WB, Jews would not feel safe in a one-state (with equal numbers of Jews and Arabs), therefore the survey finds that Jews might prefer to have separate roads ("a necessary situation" say 50% of Israelis). I can assume they would prefer not to mix with Arabs in their buildings and schools for the same reasons that high-class and low-class don't mix, religious and secular don't mix, etc. You can classify that as racism if you'd like, but people of the same race would also not mix between their classes, so it isn't racial at all. 3. Since most Arab regimes are either cruel to their minorities or they don't respect equality between genders or gay civilians and what not, Jews would probably feel inclined to protect their own basic human rights by not granting equal rights to Arabs in a future one-state, since it's a win-or-lose situation for the Jews. One of the two groups, bu this line of thinking, has to end up deprived of those rights, so naturally Jews would work for their own benefit. You would too. 4. The real backwards, anti-democratic, racist and stupid people in Israeli society are either a small percentage of the population (in some of the figures given in the article), or we are talking about the religious orthodox community, which is again a minority group that is lagging behind the rest of Israeli society and the rest of the modern world. The rest of Israeli society, thank God, values democracy and basic human rights. 5. The majority of Israelis, based on this survey, are in-fact such nice and gentle people that they would go as far as calling the current situation "apartheid" (58%). See point eight for clarification on why this doesn't outrage me. 6. Secular Israelis get a passing grade in this article, so at least we can be happy about one thing. 7. Here's a good example of how Levy fools readers: "An even larger majority wants to live in an apartheid state if Israel annexes the territories." - the line is phrased in such a way to fool you into thinking Jews hope and long for an apartheid state, but I can just as easily argue that they would never go for it, quoting the very same line! 8. "The survey conductors say perhaps the term "apartheid" was not clear enough to some interviewees." - I don't think the term is clear to Levy's readers either. I advise anyone reading this to look up "apartheid laws in SA" and compare them to modern Israeli laws, and tell me if they are similar or not. 9. The article seems to indicate that Jews in Israel don't want to deal with Arabs so much and don't want to annex the West-Bank. This gives us an indication that the PA and Hamas are an obstacle to peace, since Israelis seem to be ready to transfer lands to the Arabs for the sake of securing for themselves a state that respects modernity, democracy, human rights, and respects minorities, including the Israeli Arab minority, whose entire existence goes in the face of Levy's entire article. 10. I must say I am shocked after reading this article. It doesn't surprise me that the Haridim support aparheid, but that such a large number of Israelis encourage it and believe that the Arab ditizens of Israel have no right, is terrible. I hate the idea that Arab memebers of the Knesset, particularly Ahmed Tibi, gets away with working against Israel in Arab countries and think he should be brought to trial, but I also want Arab citizens to have the same rights and opportunities that every Israeli citizen has provided he doesn't work against the country. But that goes for every Jewish citizen as well. It is time this right wing government goes home and more liberal people take over.

I do not believe the outcome of this survey being representive for the Israeli community. Maybe too many orthodox people were questioned, who like to create sex division in busses and public places. Also Gidon Levy should become a TV star and forget journalism as his manipultating the news makes me sick.

It appears from the questions reproduced with Levy's article that the term "Apartheid" was not used in the survey. It is consistent with Levy's views of Israel--but is far from the reality of the country.The high rate of racist views in so maNY SECTORS OF THE iSRAELI PUBLIC IS HORRIFYING AND FRIGHTENING. iT SHOWS THE NEED FOR CIVIC EDUCATION AND STRICT ENFORCEMENT OF ANTI-DISCRIMINATION LEGISLATION. But Israel in its daily life is not anywhere near an apartheid state. So why does your editor (who surely writes the headlines for the articles published) stain us with such a hideous brand of shame. Gideon Levy’s entire premise is based on a hypothetical situation where Israel annexes the West Bank. However, perhaps the real story here is that a plurality of the Israeli public does not favor annexing West Bank settlements let alone the West Bank in its entirety. This makes the question of voting rights for Palestinians in an annexed West Bank entirely moot. That such a large majority of the Israeli public would deny such a right to Palestinians is unsurprising given that this would effectively lead to the end of Israel as a Jewish state if it allowed Palestinians to vote as equal citizens or the end of Israel as a democratic state if it denied Palestinians those rights. Which is exactly why the Israeli public does not support such a policy, precisely because the majority of Israelis do not want to be associated with apartheid. This is just one example of his biased analysis. In general, his articles should simply be ignored. Shame on you Ha'Aretz!

It seems to me that the headline "Most Israeli Jews would support apartheid regime in Israel" isn't supported by the survey. E.g. the "there is apartheid in Israel" (58%) wasn't a yes or no question, but one in which they were allowed to answer "in some ways" (39%) or "in most ways" (19%). "In some ways" could mean anything - e.g. there are separate schools/roads. As to "would support an apartheid regime", that doesn't sound like something which was asked (or for that mater, defined) either, but extrapolated from the other questions about Apartheid-like measures which could be implemented if the West Bank was annexed. This paragraph is revealing: "The survey conductors say perhaps the term "apartheid" was not clear enough to some interviewees. However, the interviewees did not object strongly to describing Israel's character as "apartheid" already today, without annexing the territories. Only 31 percent objected to calling Israel an "apartheid state" and said "there's no apartheid at all." What does "no apartheid at all" mean? Isn't it really a binary question, yes or no Israel is (or should be) broadly comparable to South African apartheid? By the logic of this survey, any country with a put upon minority (e.g. a large amount of US black males being banned from voting as they are convicted criminals) is an "Apartheid state" because there are aspects of the society which reflect some aspects of Apartheid. But logically that's wrong. As we are all well aware, calling a state an "Apartheid" state is a major allegation and one which needs to be carefully defined for it to be meaningful and useful in a discussion. I'm not saying this survey isn't worrying or difficult - but I'm not sure the results can be taken as far (or close to as far) as the article wants them to be taken.

Although I believe in equal rights for all of humanity, I can see why some Israelis have this view. They have lost friends and family in wars and terror attacks, the country is constantly under boycott by its neighbours, people need bomb shelters built into their houses, and have government issued gas masks at the ready. A large portion of their hard earned tax is spent on defence instead of other items of public use. And this has been the never- ending story since 1948. For all these troubles, is it surprising that SOME don't believe In equality?

Why doesn't Haaretz conduct a survey in the dozen or more Arab/ Islamist states to find out what their preference wold be with regard to having Jews in their midst? Not that a survey is needed. Mahmoud Abbas has already made it clear that no Jew would ever be allowed to live in a Palestinian state, and Hamas is sworn to Israel's total annihilation. Not to mention the fact that an Arab from Bethlehem can visit Israel, but an Israeli cannot set foot in Bethelehem. Enogh with Haaretz' twisted, leftwing reverse bigotry.

What are you saying. That because the sentence was handed down by an Arab and\or that because there was an Arab judge it is obvious that Israel is not becoming an apartheid state. This is a single tiny example compared to where Israel does demonstrate apartheid - in the territories through its illegal occupation and in the way there is institutionalised disparity between the way the state treats its Jewish and non-Jewish citizens. Those who are at the losing end of these policies can be counted in their millions. Do you still think that your example stacks up when millions of people can tell you how - on a daily basis - they are discriminated against.

Word can't describe this..There are good Israelis fighting against this, and they deserve all our support. But the paranoid, racist ideas seems to have won. This is why Israel needs to be boycotted. Iran's people can't be blamed for their government, since Iran is not a democracy. But Israeli citizens must take their share of blame, since they have voted for the extremists in power.

Also a ridiculous headline. Most Jews do NOT support an apartheid regime. The survey is based on a 'what if' which is the worst nightmare of most Israelis, i.e. annexation of the West Bank, a de facto bi-national state. The reason most Israelis DON'T WANT to annex the West Bank is that we DON'T WANT to become a highly discriminatory society as a result of feeling threatened physically and demographically. Most of us DO WANT two states for two people each of whom can build their own destiny.

Ha'aretz that is. Talk about a misleading headline. Israel hasn't annexed the West bank and has no plans to do so. Do they support an "apartheid regiem" in Israel today?

Although the prejudice here is extremely troubling, I'd assume that a strong majority of those polled; if they were to have been asked whether they are in favor of annexing the West Bank and being responsible for all current inhabitants, would have said: "Mochel Tovot" [thanks, but no-thanks]. I wonder why this question wasn't asked.

Hardly a surprise that a tiny poll commissioned by the New Israel Fund and then published in HaAretz shows exactly what the Left want to find. What a coup for all the enemies of Israel to have just this kind of new propaganda. People should look at WHY most israelis would support apartheid. For ages arabs are calling for destruction of the jews, for ages they try to kill every jew in their way, for ages they deny holocaust, for ages they kill innocent childeren, since judaism they only want them dead! I dont hate arabs I dont hate jews but i can feel with the israelis why they think like this. This is just a never ending story....

This is common knowledge all over the world, and many of us have been saying it for years. Many Israelis would like to keep the cake and eat it at the same time. If only there was a way to have the OT de jure for Israel (de facto is a done deal), but not the original inhabitants living there. Of course, should Israeli policy makers heed these polls and institute such a system officially, even Israel's staunchest ally would have no other recourse but to distance itself from Israel.
