i am not terribly impressed by these comments. however, its important to note that R. Ovadia was one of the only (perhaps THE only) rabbi in the ultra-orthodox world to endorse the notion of "land for peace" (implicitly recognizing a 2-state solution) during the oslo years. As far as i know, he has not retracted this ruling. So the comments were certainly hateful, but contrary to what the haaretz reporter (and most talkbackers) seem to believe, it does not reflect a world view or an approach to peace with the Pals but rather, a strong sense that the current Pal leadership can only do harm to israel. You could dislike R. Yosef/Shas all you like, but to paint it as standard ultra-right wing party is simply factually wrong.

It is unfortunate and disappointing to hear these statements from a "respected" man. These statements and other ones he said in the past reflect his aging thoughts and some degree of dementia. If you look objectively at Shas leader Ovadia Yosef here, Hassan Nasrallah of Hezbollah in Lebanon and Ahmadinagad in Iran and other clerics in the Muslim world and Israel, you see that all these so-called leaders should form a party together; all of them are calling for the extinction of each other. Again, these voices are heard in Israel, the Palestinian territories, Iran, Lebanon and other countries. The majorities are not like those fanatics, narrow minded, demagogues; the majority is for peace. We must though remember that these voices after all are political voices and they do not necessary mean what they say. It is the game of politics in the Middle East, and if you are thin skin, weak, shaky, it is better for you to get out of the game.
