Interior Minister Eli Yishai will be the nominal head of Shas in the upcoming elections, Haaretz learned on Tuesday, but former chairman Aryeh Deri, who recently returned to political life, will be granted additional powers. By tomorrow, the deadline for parties to submit their Knesset lists for the upcoming elections, Shas' Council of Torah Sages will decide the names and order of the slate.

According to party sources, a proposed compromise would see Yishai remain Shas' most senior cabinet member while Deri is expected to function as the unofficial leader of the party.
