Settlers attack Palestinian village to protest police crackdown
Group marches through Hawara and hurls rocks at home after 11 Yitzhar residents detained for violence.
By Haaretz Service Tags: Israel news Israel settlersFar-rightists from the West Bank settlement of Yizthar on Thursday marched through a neighboring Palestinian village and attacked local homes, to avenge a series of arrests by Israel Police earlier in the day.
The group stormed through Hawara to show their anger at the "police crusade against the settlers" after 11 residents of their community were detained, settler spokesman Avraham Binyamin.
They surrounded a Palestinian home in and hurled rocks through windows, according to the residents. People inside called for help through a loudspeaker, and the settlers fled as Palestinians converged on the area.
Israel Police raided Yitzhar early Thursday morning, arresting seven residents suspected of involvement in "price-tag" attacks on Palestinians. Four more residents were arrested soon after.
Most of the detainess, who included senior settlement officials, were released shortly after their arrests.
Extreme right-wing activist Baruch Marzel issued a statement in response to the arrests, saying that the Israel Defense Forces were "out to get" the settlers.
Extremist settlers declared the "price tag" campaign following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's declaration of a temporary freeze in West Bank construction late last year.
Yitzhar has been at the forefront of the settler movement's campaign, which calls for violent retaliation for government restrictions on Jewish building in the West Bank. Residents have launched numerous attacks on Palestinians, including an arson attack on a mosque in December 2009.
The IDF vowed last week to take serious steps to curb settle violence at Yitzhar, with assistance from local police and the Shin Bet security service's Jewish unit, set up to thwart violence by extremist settlers.The move came after rioters clashed with soldiers in the settlement.
According to Yitzhar residents, IDF troops began harassing groups of visitors who wanted to tour the area, and prevented the visitors from entering the springs near the settlement.
The residents said that at a certain point, the soldiers tried to hold back one of the residents, which created upheaval among the settlers.

The world should recognize the activity of these settlers for what it is. This is another form of terrorism, intended to drive the Palestinians from their ancestral lands. The homes of these settlers should be demolished.
Baruch Marzel said it best...'the IDF is "out to get" the settlers'. The response: to attack Palestinians who in his own words were not the problem. This sounds like Alabama in the early 1960s.

In normal countries people are not settled on stolen lands and carry guns to protect them for the fact that they are settled on stolen lands. People who settle on stolen lands, like the settlers are, should not have any rights. Where is the Left? The left cares about people who treat others with respect, not people who carry guns and shoot at defenceless people. Where is your beloved Likud? The party that built these settlements for you and the rest of the settlers and brought you to settle in? How can a civilized country, much less a democracy, allow this to happen again and again and again. All I can say is I hope all the major news agencies pick this stuff up and give it as much world wide exposure as possible.

No Michael, heroes are brave and courageous people who put themselves at risk to protect others - you will find some heroes in the IDF, but I'm afraid these settlers are just cowards who attack people who can't defend themselves, knowing full well that they do not need to fear law enforcement. They are not there to protect Israel, only to serve their own ideology. You might also notice that the article stated that the settlers RAN when villagers converged on the area.

Your claim that the IDF harasses settlers to satisfy the Saudis makes you appear to be a total ignoramus. If there were Saudi influence in Israel, there wouldn't be any settlers, and there would not be any occupation of Palestinian territory. You claim no mention of violence the settlers are accused of. Most normal people would determine throwing rocks thru the windows of a private residence an act of violence. Those settlers are illegal residents on illegally occupied Palestinian land. Their "price tag" policy, to attack the nearest Palestinian inhabited area, when the Israeli gov't does something against them they don't like represents the mentality of thugs, potential murderers, criminal vandals and hoodlums. Surrounding the home of an innocent family and throwing rocks thru their windows sort of reminds you of kristallnacht, doesnt it?

The pal security forces are top notch and trained by the US. Put them in control of the area and lets see if the settlers quiet down. Maybe the settlers know there is no 'price tag' for their actions, but if by chance a pal security officer was poised to secure the area, they would think twice.

Time for settlers to leave the westbank, so the 2 state solution will get its effect. Time for the settlers to hand over the keys of the properties to the palestinians, so they can easlily move in. Time for the palestinians to declare their own state. Time for the IDF to leave the Westbank. Time for the PA to get its act together and work on state building. Time for the Israelis and the Palestinians to accept eachother as neighbours. Is not that difficult to live in peace!!!

The "settlers" were released because there wasn't even a hint of a basis for the charges. In a normal country, those that claim to care about human rights would have challenged the police on their racial profiling.
