In November 1921 the British and the Turks were negotiating changes to the Treaty of Sevres, the peace agreement that ended World War I in the Middle East. The first British High Commissioner for Palestine, Herbert Samuel, asked to suspend the talks over archaeological finds the Turks had taken with them when they withdrew from Palestine.
