Polish-British sociologist Zygmunt Bauman rejects call to cancel lectures in Israel

Palestinian group bases its argument on Bauman's criticism of the occupation, but the professor says he's against boycotts.

Polish-British sociologist Zygmunt Bauman will go ahead with lectures in Israel next week despite a Palestinian group's call for him to cancel the events, says his grandson, Israeli human rights lawyer Michael Sfard.

To understand Israel and Palestine properly one should look at the people as well. On Nov 30 1947 the UN mandated TWO STATES. The State of Israel AND the State of Palestine. Two states with recognized borders. From that day up to June 6th 1967 the Israelis built a country literally from the ground up. They took barren rock desert land and made it bloom. They put in a social structure and economic programs. There was not one inch of OCCUPIED Palestinian territory. What did the Palestinians do ? They sat on their asses and whined to the world. They continue to do that till today. Remember I am only talking about the PRE 1967 OCCUPATION ERA.

suffer from collective Asperger's. This is a good Man. you call him a traitor, naive, a shmuck but to me he is what Israel should be and I I for one am proud to call him a real friend to Israel

  Additionally, he is taking a sensible approach to the boycott issue. Not that I'm in favour of boycotts, except in extreme circumstnces, but the Pals are awfully closer to the conditions that should lead to a boycott than Israel. I also agree that occupation isn't desirable but defensive occupation is simply necessary and when that occurs, those who are occupied have the responsiblity to make peace by renouncing violence and agreeing to terms that provide the defensive occupier with security. In additon, the circumstances in Israel are unusual and complex. The was no Palestine and Pals were a diverse group of people, many who had been there for generations under the authority of a variety of flags and moe recent residents, many very recent, from neighbouring Arab countries who emigrated to the West Bank for economic opportunities. Moreover, Israel has a deep historic, religious and psychological connection to parts of the West Bank, not the least of which is the Jewish Quarter in Jerusalem. It takes chutzpah for Pals to insist that there will be no agreement unless they get authority over the Jewish quarter.
