Police recommended on Monday charging Upper Nazareth Mayor Shimon Gapso with alleged fraud and bribery related to the weekly Ramle-Lod market held in the city center.
The mayor is suspected of accepting bribes that amounted to hundreds and thousands of shekels for the duration of two years since his 2008 election.
The police investigation into the allegations concluded that there was sufficient evidence incriminating the mayor and other officials.
According to the police, the evidence will be transferred to the regional prosecution in the next few days to write up an indictment.
