Dozens of Silwan residents hurl rocks at police forces stationed at the scene; one policeman lightly wounded.

The guard shot the 32-year-old man while driving through Silwan before dawn, a police spokesman said, adding he told investigators he had opened fire after his car was blocked and stoned by dozens of Palestinians.

A Jewish doctor living in the nearby town David was called to the site of the shooting to treat the wounded Palestinian man, who was lying some 30 meters away from the main road, but he already had no pulse.
The security guard told police that he was driving through the town alone and stopped at a gas station, despite the guidelines which forbid stopping in the local stations. He said he feared that he would be abducted after several Palestinians blocked his car and shot several times in their direction.
Local residents said the Israeli worked as a guard for the small Jewish settlement in Silwan, and that at least two other Palestinians were wounded in the shooting.
Peace Now organization issued a statement in response to the incident calling to remove the security in East Jerusalem from private companies and place official security personnel in the area.
"Settlers erected, with state funding, a private and armed militia in Silwan which terrorizes and harms the fabric of life and the security in the are," the state said.
The guard was taken away by police for questioning, police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld told the German Press Agency DPA. According to Rosenfeld, the victim had a criminal record, and had previously been involved in rioting in the neighbourhood.
Silwan, located right below the southern section of the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, is a focus of tension between around 300 Israeli settlers, who moved into the neighbourhood, and approximately 55,000 Palestinian residents.
Israel captured East Jerusalem along with the West Bank from Jordan in the 1967 Six Day War and regards all of the city as its capital, a status not recognized internationally. Many settlers claim a Jewish biblical birthright to the occupied territory.
Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of the state they intend to establish in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, a demand at the heart of U.S.-sponsored peace talks with Israel which resumed this month.
Palestinians torched cars and threw stones and firebombs at Israeli police in Silwan last month after residents reported that settlers had tried to cross a mosque courtyard to reach an ancient spring where religious Jews conduct ritual ablutions.

... to indoctrinate an Israeli soldier to kill one of their own - and at exactly the right time. Is it so impossible to shoot someone in the legs if one really feels threatened and wasn't he 30 yards/meters away? Does it not make you sick to always find excuses for plain common murder, viciousness, exploitation and spite? YOU ARE ON THEIR LAND... or on land to which they have AT LEAST as much right as you... even without building permits?!
This kind of violation of the Law is a disgrace that serves only to destroy Israel's image abroad. let the settlers move to Israel and be protected by the police like any law-abiding citizen.
Who knows what would have happened if he didn't have a weapon to defend himself. Imagine what would you do when dozens of people are throwing rocks at you.
The residents of Silwan have been subjected to years of efforts by settlers and their supporters in the municipality, police etc to expel the Palestinians of this neighbourhood from their homes. This is a slow, steady drip-drip process of ethnic cleansing. It is quite predictable that in such circumstances a small event can quickly escalate. If there is any form of violent resistance from the Palestinians of Silwan you can be sure that the Israeli authorities will use it as an excuse for further acts aimed at making all of their lives intolerable.
...Israel does exist so folk can have a safe homeland, no? Why is it so determined to have it's citizens OUTSIDE of Israel in "territories occupied"?
Rumours in the Old City ofJjerusalem during the last few month, talk about intifada in Jerusalem starting on Succoth. The reason is that they believe the Israeli Goverment will support conquering the Mountain (Har habait -El Axsa)
Yes, indeed. PLO is so tricky that they made a security guard kill a Palestinian in Silwan to launch their intifada. Maybe they will also be tricky enough to prevent the moratorium from being extended and end the talks that they so viciously accepted just to have them fail ?
At least you get a little background information. This reads like "Casa Blanca".
The Arab terrorist should have been sleeping then- and prepared to work at an honest profession. If they want to play hardball, they are going to lose. The people of Israel are not going to allow another Intifada. The Arabs need to know that their violence will be devastating to them- not us.
Every Palestinian man, is considerd by the israeli police as a criminal , and so the killing is a normal act for them. The situation in west bank, especially in Silwan, was already inflammable. Why this foolish provocation to the palestinian residents in Silwan?!
is starting to fight war with them
Not a terrorist nor militant nor murderer, just a guard? Le't just hope armed civilian Palestinians are also referred to in the same manner in the future too.
The illegal settler community continues to capture palestinian land and homes in East Jerusalem and the IDF continue to raze palestinian homes. Peace will never prevail until there is justice. The UN and internation community need to take strong united stance against these illegal policies which will only harm the inflictor in the end.
The Palestinian's was, to be sure..
News like this is worthless. You should either interview both sides or concentrate on just facts.
Intifada are planned to coincide with peace talks and are used to bully Israel into concessions like we saw at the Madrid talks, OSLO and Camp David. PLO play book is so predictable.
Private security guard at large, driving "a beat" at 4am? No corroborating witness to his acount? Blood on his hands? What was his business in the neighborhood? Police and border guards stationed at the scene saw and did nothing? His story rings false.
Do you want from us to keep silent and behave as a flock of sheeps leaded by foolish leaders and crazy settlers?!!!
Stop avoiding the real issue. Settlers pushing their way like cickoos will never work. Separate land for each or one integrated state. Take your pick.
Who killed who? Did the PLO plan for the Palestinian to be shot dead? It is really a pity (and an outrage) that in today's world the truth is twisted and the victim becomes the aggressor...
what a coincidence, that plan them to coincide with one of them being murdered as well.
We all know you are dying to pull out and give freedom to Palestinians. It is the Palestinians who love their cage...
The animals who run the Palestinian terror factions of fatah and hamas have one goal: drive the chosen people to the sea and drown all the innocent lives. This is not life to live in constant fear of terror. There is only one solution to the conflict: relocate all the livestock of Palestine where they belong - outside the Holy land that belongs to the chosen people before God!!
