The Ultra Orthodox parties were not running on making Litzman deputy health minister or health minister. They were running on instituting a policy of descrimination against secular Israelis. Elections have consequences.

Mr. Litzman You held your post due to the political clout of your party. It is not a personnel issue but the result of your part's fall from power. This is what democracy is all about. Now maybe Israel will be able to draft a civilian Constitution witch your party opposed. Further perhaps much of your party's unreasonable funding may now finally come to an end.

From all accounts he was doing a good job, and this may well be as he claims. However Shas had a lot of people in office who were doing no job at all, and he unfortunately is leaving with them.

There are 2 problems with Litzman's lament. First, a lot of it is about him...as if a government minister gets and holds his job outside the framework of elections and coalition politics. Sorry sir but after years of being on top of the political pile, your camp has had a reversal;. It's called parliamentary democracy. Second, no one is boycotting Litzman or his sector. What many Israelis are doing -- enough to carry the day, including the religious Zionists in Ha-Bayit Ha-Yehudi --is attempting to more equitably distribute the totally lopsided financial benefits and other perks, such as IDF exemptions, long enjoyed by the ultra-Orthodox. Sharing the burden and the resources is also a part of democracy! Most Jews do not accept the ultra-Orthdox claim that their particular way of life is the essence of Judaism and crucial to the well-being of Israel. Litzman and the other ultra-Orthodox politicians will no longer be able to use state power to coerce the majority into endlessly indulging them. This change is not a boycott; it si righting a wrong.
