does it not make sense for PM Netanyahu to negotiate a peace proposal with the Palestinians and provide the Israeli electorate with a sort of referendum on either supporting a compromising settlement or not with the Palestinians? Aside from the important budgetary issue (which every Western government seems to be facing these days given their deficits), why impede on a most pressing matter in question of Israel's survival? It's ridiculous to waste another election process without concrete principles presented to the Israeli public on how a given politician intends to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This applies to all the major parties - Likud, Kadima, Labour, Yisrael Beiteinu Meretz, etc.

Something is very artificial about the budget crisis. Early elections are not going to change Israel's political landscape, so how will it solve the budget crisis? Netanyahu is creating a cabinet crisis, that's all he is doing. A good excuse to refuse all the decisions that Obama plans to foist on him. It is now over to Obama. Interesting to see if he will allow Netanyahu to resign.

I don't think Obama will allow Netanyahu to fabricate a government crisis. The coming few weeks will tell us where the American administration is heading in the Middle East.
