The Likud Central Committee voted on Thursday to resume settlement construction in East Jerusalem and the West Bank after the current freeze on settlement construction expires in September.

Last November, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the chairman of the Likud Party, announced a 10-month freeze on settlement construction.

Netanyahu did not participate in the Likud Central Committee meeting, where right-leaning sections of the party called for a vote on a proposal to bolster settlement construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Netanyahu's critics say that his behavior is strange, since he agreed to the final draft of the proposal initiated by MK Danny Danon, one of the Likud leaders who opposed the settlement freeze.

"It is not respectable for the chairman of the party not to show up to a central committee meeting," senior Likud officials said Wednesday, when the prime minister voiced doubts that he would be attending the meeting. "It doesn't look good. He announces that he won't renew the [settlement] freeze and supports bolstering the settlements, but then, in a strange move, avoids the meeting."

Netanyahu succeeded in delaying the vote for months, fearing pressure from the U.S. The American administration has demanded that Israel stop building in East Jerusalem and the West Bank as part of efforts to relaunch peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

Netanyahu announced prior to the meeting that he would not oppose Danon's proposal, which is meant to support the settlers in East Jerusalem and the West Bank as the 10-month freeze comes to an end on September 26.

Netanyahu's associates rebuffed the criticism against him, saying that there was no real need for the prime minister's presence at the meeting as he has already declared that he would resume the settlement construction once the freeze expired.

And the world pressure on Israel will keep increasing and Isreal will continually be more and more isolated and hated for their actions and unwelcomed in the civilized world. The world has been silent in the past, but since Israel attacked the international blockade, all attention is on her murders, occupation, confiscation, illegal blockades, ongoing bombing, ethnic cleansing, apartheid laws and collective punishment and humiliation, Although Israel continueing to do these things will hurt the Pals in the short-run, it will soon lead to their freedom.

We now know that there are forces in Israel who are poised to trip up every step twoards peace. Everyone knows it. The settlers and their supporters control the destiny of Israel. Sadly, no one will ever have the power to make a sincere effort to make a deal with the Palestinians. So why pretend?

troops from Iraq to the West Bank, reinforce as necessary. Remove all Border and IDF units to the Green Line, shoot them if necessary. Dismantle the Separation barrier that is not on the Green Line. Shoot any individual that exits their home with a weapon (Jew or Palestinian). If IDF or Border police oppose such policies annihilate IAF, Israeli navy, and Israeli armoured brigades. When local inhabitants grow up (100 - 200 years) end occupation.

One wonders what is the point of this exercise, given that there is no way Israel can resolve the occupation withoug leaving the West Bank. One need only remember Rhodesia, or for that matter anywhere in ex-colonial Africa... The settlers finally had to leave, and some did not leave in a limousine. Is this what the Israeli ruling group want to happen?

    • 22:38

Labor is anxious for Kadima to join the coalition, as if this will strengthen the peace forces against the Russians (Lieberman) and the religious. But the problem is Likud itself, the majority do not believe in peace and prefer holding on to the Territories. Next time the idea of joining the coalition is raised, Livni should come up with a counter proposal: Let Netanyahu split away from Likud (with at least 7 Knesset members as required by law), let them join Kadima and Netanyahu will remain Prime Minister. If Netanyahu is really interested in peace and not in excuses, then he really belongs in Kadima because this is how that party was formed. Let Likud fall into the hands of the ideological nuts and religious fanatics. It carries with it a lousy ideology.

efforts to restart talks? the pal Arabs refuse to talk. they refuse to be in the same room as Israel. they refuse to stop promoting hatred and terrorism against Jews, Christians and Israelis. they refuse to end their campaigns of delegitimazation of Israel. Israel has made tremendous efforts, and the Arabs have only demanded more and more. Israel should build, build and build. if there would ever be some type of peace and if Israel would decide to cede more parts of historical Israel to the Arab terrorists, then that can enjoy the homes that were built. but until that happens, life should not wait. building should not stop. as long as the arabs make impossible demands of Israel i.e parts of Jerusalem, hevron gush etzion, Ariel, "right of return", being allowed to make pacts with Iran/Al Quada, allowed to bring heavy weapons and attack aircrafts, etc, then there will never be peace. the Arabs need to end their campaign the there is an occupation that created their situation as apposed to the reality that their endless efforts to destroy israel and deny israel as being the Jewish state that brought them here. Its ridiculous to say that the 19 years that Egypt and Jordan controlled parts of historical Israel between 1948 and 1967 is what the basis of occupied lands are. the Jews were murdered and thrown out of their homes in the 1930's and 1940's and this is what they use as evidence of occupation? its insane. If the Arabs continue to threaten then they can return to their homes in Jordan/Palestine and end the Arab occupation of Israel .

In the US many of the top public relations firms include many Jews. Israel is full of Jews but cannot get public relations right. I.E. the Biden insult; the Gaza Flotilla debacle; the incident where you made the Turkish diplomat sit in a lower chair; everything Lieberman; settlers; it's one PR disaster after another. it's getting hard for your friends to support you. Now this? Who's running your country, regular, sensible Israelis or settlers and their supporters. If you build this and settlers move there and this area gets ceded to the Palestinians to become part of Palestine , the settlers who encouraged this and moved there should become Palestinians. Jewish Palestinians. Israel has Arabs. Palestine will have Jews. It's the same thing. They'll spend Palestinian money, they'll travel on Palestinian passports, they'll lick Palestinian postage stamps with Arafat's likeness on it. Enjoy Eretz Yisrael, settlers!

    A national disaster named Netanyahu
    • Logios
    • 24.06.10
    • 21:06

Soon after Netanyahu took office for the first time (1996) it was clear that he was a failure. A British diplomat (or was it the foreign minister?) described him as "a drunk lurching from one lamp-post to the next". We see a repeat performance now, although it is developing a bit slower. Let us look at the damage, so far: 1. The peace process with the Palestinians is essentially stuck, and with the Syrians it is non-existent. 2. Israel's standing in the world has sunk so low that it is approaching the status of a pariah state. 3. The low standing is even getting to be shared by the US, where recently an influential analyst (A. Cordesman) wrote that Israel is of "tertiary" value to US national interests. 4. The unusual friendship with Turkey, a major Muslim state, and a strategic achievement conceived by and worked on since the days of David Ben-Gurion is simply given up for some unclear reasons of "national honor". Can things get worse? Of course. How about a military attack against Iran? What is wrong with Netanyahu? A psychologist might say that he is a weak man who is driven to appear strong and this drive overcomes better judgment. I don't know the roots of his problem except that he is clearly a progressing tragedy for Israel and we should get rid of him fast. No, very fast.

Because of this desicion more and more people over the world will join in to the quire of chriticism against the Israeli ocupation and settlement projects at Palestinian owned land. When faced with that righteous criticism that has nothing to do about the existence of Israel Netanyahu will claim in a speach to the Israelis that the world is antisemtic and hates Israel, as he and former leaders have done so many times in Israel. That way Netanyahu contributes to a more isolated Israel in the world and to a less safe existence for the Israelis. I wonder when the Israelis and Palestininans will get fed up with their leaders. I wonder when they will get fed up with the warmongers and remove them from their positions and create a new foundation to buid on instead of this infected situation which is like a never ending loop of tradegys for both the palestineans and israelis. Shalom!

It makes sense to resume settlement constructions after the freeze expires since no progress has occurred (so far at least) with the Palestinians regarding the peace negotiations (once again, PA shows that it is not interested in having a nation of its own). It will be interesting to see what the US will have to say about this....
