Knesset Speaker Edelstein to give Independence Day speech 26 years after release from Soviet prison
Born in the southern Ukraine and until recently the Minister of Information and Diaspora, the former Prisoner of Zion says Israelis must argue over the country's future but not crush each other in the process.
For the first time, Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein will be giving the main speech at the Independence Day ceremony on Mount Herzl on Tuesday. Edelstein will speak of coming full circle as he marks exactly 26 years since his release from imprisonment in the former Soviet Union, where he was held for three years as a Prisoner of Zion.
