Jerusalem honors convicted spy Pollard on 9,000th day of incarceration

A message urging Obama to free Pollard will be projected onto Jerusalem city walls; Dozens of protesters call for Pollard's immediate release.

By Haaretz Service Tags: Israel news Jonathan Pollard Barack Obama

The Jerusalem municipality will dim lights that illuminate the walls surrounding the old city on Tuesday evening, as a gesture of solidarity with convicted spy Jonathan Pollard, who has been incarcerated in the United States for almost a quarter-century.

Pollard was arrested in 1986 as he tried to seek asylum in the Israeli Embassy in Washington. He was convicted of espionage for Israel and was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Aspart of Tuesday's event, a special message calling upon U.S. President Barack Obama to release Pollard will be projected onto the darkened city walls.

Dozens of Pollard supporters demonstrated earlier Tuesday under the Metarim Bridge for the second consecutive day, calling for his immediate release.

Since Pollard's conviction, the U.S. has steadfastly refused to shorten his sentence or grant him a pardon, despite requests by Israeli prime ministers, ministers, and MKs.

According to the official version of events, Israel immediately apologized to the U.S. after Pollard was arrested and claimed that a "rogue agency" had been behind the espionage activity. Since then, a decision was made in Israel that no espionage activities will be undertaken on U.S. soil.

The true traitors are the Bush family who grew wealthy funding and profiting off the Nazi regime, who aided Nazis against the US, who helped the Saudis, armed Iran (Iran contra), who trained and helped OSAMA bin Laden, who armed Iraq and left Saddam in Power and who later sold out the US to help Arab oil interests. All of this done by CIA and Bush family and even worse.

Tenet claims he stopped Pollard release
    • 14.07.10
    • 04:35

Former CIA chief George Tenet claims, in a new book, that he was the person who prevented the release of Jonathan Pollard during the Wye Plantation talks in October of 1998. The talks, between then-Prime Minister of Israel Binyamin Netanyahu and then-head of the Palestinian Authority Yasir Arafat, were brokered by President Bill Clinton and focused on an Israeli withdrawal from most of the biblical city of Hevron. In his book “At The Eye of the Storm,” Tenet says that Israel had demanded that Jonathan Pollard – who had been convicted of spying for Israel in 1985 – be released from jail, as part of a deal in which Netanyahu agreed to the Hevron withdrawal.

Having assured itself of Obama's craven submission, it seems as if Israel has needed to stab him in the back. I realize that this is largely coincidence. The destruction of Arab homes in Jerusalem as well as the celebration of Jonathan Pollard are not actions in any 'conspiracy so vast', but is certainly an echo of past Israeli affronts to the current US administration. Israel seems oblivious to the arrogance of it's attitude towards the United States.

I realize that Pollard is a 'hero' to Israelis. The sale of RASIN to Israelis, as well as the sale of other classified documents to South Africa and Pakistan constituted a treasonable offense and violation of his oaths as well as US laws. He was not the worst traitor to ever spy against the USA, but he was one of the most damaging.

Pollard was not an Israeli when he committed his crimes. Neither was he a member of the Mossad or any other Israeli intelligence agency. He was one of many, many sources being run by Israel. The way sources are handled, not only by Israel, but by everyone is this: If they can help you, you nurture them. If they can hurt you, you kill them. If they can neither help you nor hurt you, you throw them away. This is the situation that Israel finds itself with Pollard. He has been thrown away all according to the rules. Israeli politicians don't really want Pollard back.

Pollard was a greedy opportunistic criminal who sold secrets for cash to more than one country, including former apartheid S. Africa. His motivation was anything but idealistic. he deserves to remain in gaol. What I find most laughable is the special prayer for his release uttered in certain synagogues before the torah is returned to the ark. I either walk out or sit down and read a book when that happens.

It disgusts me, as an American Jew, that Pollard is looked upon as a hero by some Jews. This man was a traitor who decided, after receiving money from Israel, to sell a truckload of confidential information to another country. He worked for America but sold America's secrets to another country and in that regard he is no different than Mordecai Vanannu, another traitor. If you ask one of Pollards supporters what would they think if a French, British, or German American working for an American intelligence sold America's secrets they will call that person a traitor. Why is it that Pollard is not considered the same? This man made every Jew working for an American intelligence agency suspect of dual loyalties. Let him rot in jail.

The complicating factor for any intervention by Israel, is that Jonathon Pollard was spying for all and sundry, and just so happened to be spying for Israel, too, which enables him to play the Israel card. That being so, it is moot if Israel can have any more comfort in Jonathon Pollard's loyalties, than Israel has over Mordechai Vanunu's, even though Jonathon Pollard's contribution to Israeli intelligence was of genuine value.

Pollard keeps his personal enemies list (Pollards list) on his website. The list is described as people who could have done more to help Pollard but didn't. The list is comprised of a couple of hundred people, mostly Jews, mostly politicians, media, or Rabbis, mostly Israeli and American. It is a list of very powerful and influential people. What kind of lunatic would make such a list and publish it as his personal enemies? Talk about burning your bridges! When you say that Pollard is his own worst enemy, you are not just mouthing platitudes. Pollard takes that concept and elevates it out of sight. This the the third of a series explaining why Pollard will never get out of prison.

I understand that America is our ally, but what was done to Pollard is a severe wedge between us. Pollard was not given a proper trial. He was accused of leaking highly confidential information Israel, so that he can save lives. The court didn't allow any of his lawyers (despite their top level clearance) to know what Pollard was being accused of, or of what evidence was produced to accuse him of any crime. As far as we know, Pollard was accused of trying to annihilate the world. Why else would Pollard be the only spy in all of Americas' history to be imprisoned for so long. Without parole. Pollard should have been freed months after the incident. He was an allied spy. He wasn't some form of KGB trying to relay all of Americas' secrets to the Soviet Union. America clearly points out that he was an Israeli spy, and Israel admit it. What America isn't clear about is what 25 year old confidential secrets was he accused of sneaking that gives them the right to lock him up and throw away the key. As the land of the free, America is a hypocrite.

    • Logios

The name the Israeli intelligence community uses for Arabs who betray their country and pass information to Israel for money is "stinkers". (Actually "shtinkerim, from Yiddish.) Consider Pollard. He betrayed his country (the US), eventually doing it for money, and caused an enormous damage. The US suspects that some of the information passed by Pollard to Israel was traded with the Soviet Union for letting Jews out. The level of damage can be gleaned from the fact that George Tenet, the former CIA chief, threatened to resign when Clinton thought to release Pollard because of Israeli pressure (1999). The problem with Pollard is that he never offered a sincere apology for his betrayal. He is a real stinker for the US. If Israel wants him out, let Israel catch an American spy and trade him for Pollard. But the man deserves his fate.

You are an apologist trying to rewriting history and change the facts in order to diminish the crimes of a traitor who auctioned deadly secrets to the highest bidder friend and mortal enemies alike all for the sake of money… Pollard only became a “Jew” after he got caught and was sitting in a jail cell and realized that the only way out was buy waving the Jewish flag and wrapping himself in it and saying he did it for Israel… and by saying “they are after me because they are anti-Semites” .. he did this adapted this approach because he knew that there would be a portion of the Jewish population which would rush to defend any Jew that waves the Jewish flag and screams that they are a victim of anti-Semitism ... They argue now that the reason why he is in jail is because he is a Jew and the US is anti-Semitic. The fact that he is a traitor who sold secrets which mortally wounded the US ability to defend the free world had nothing to do with it, the fact that his actions for money lead to the executions of dozens of US agents had nothing… none of that matters to the defenders of Pollard all they see is a Jew being persecuted.. what he did doesn’t matter to them

Among the tons of info Pollard stole included the Rasin. The highest gurded secrets the USA had. It was reported that Inteligence were literaly in tears when they found out the Rasin was compramized.

After their first briefing by the CIA all presidents keep Pollard in jail. It's been obvious for years that his spying led to the deaths of American agents and assets overseas. The CIA is unforgiving about this. If it was just stealing a few secrets, Pollard would have been released years ago. He belongs where he is.

to you,, so is any other spyes , traitors,(The russians that where accused of spying for US, were traded, and now your heroes. To0 the Russians they are traitors. And your "obvious" statements are simple lies. He was never linked to any deaths, he was never accused of any. You can blah blah about somebodies motives as long as you could, but the fact is For US he is a traitor, For Isrtael he is Hero( i do not agree with the Hero part) but he served Israels Interests.

the US Israele lobby in the US, Americans will not be pleased with Obama and his Administration to release a US citizen spy for Israel. Israel does not own the United States. Pollard is a spy and a traitor to his country, and he will remain in jail for treason. Israel can scream, shout and complain or beg till they turn blue in the face, but they will not get involved in our Justice system.

I am shock that this traitor who sold secrets to the highest bidder.. who's sold secrets cost the US uncountable losses and who's sold secrets caused the deaths of dozens of US agents(real hero’s) in Russia is still considered a "Hero". I am baffled... is it because the Israeli media has withheld the full truth about what he did or are they just indifferent? The first part we can forgive... the second part of where they know the truth but believe the ends justifies the means tells the US that the Pollard supporters and those like Pollard are enemies to the US and will seek to destroy the US if in their view helped the Jewish state...The Jews need to find better hero's.. they need not look far for real Jewish hero's, history is filled and bursting at the seams with real Jewish hero's and not a criminals a thief and a traitor who was selling information to the highest bidder both friend and enemy alike... and to all those apologist and those who are history ignorant please check your facts from legitimate non-bias sources before you respond to this post by saying “he did no harm”… or “he only sold secrets” or “he never tried to sell secrets to anyone but Israel” check your facts long and hard and then you will understand why the US will never, ever let him go.

Is it that if we release him, it means his crimes didn't happen? Or is it perhaps that if we release him, it shows maternal love -- that we will tolerate anything? Show us that you REALLY care -- let Pollard go. Is that it?

First Israel uses U.S. funding to pay for the traiter Pollard spying on the U.S. Then they use U.S. funding to lobby to have him freed. Now they are using U.S. funding to project his picture on the walls surrounding the Old City. Stop funding Israel now!

If Pollard was a terrorist Palestinian who murdered, you would have the loudest voice to release the Palestinian, right Dougie ?? If you want to stop funding Israel, fine, they don't need the money. You BETTER also stop funding the Pals, Jordanians, Egyptians and the rest, Dougie.

The Russians were recently released after a WEEK. Four years was the commensurate sentence for what Pollard did. Former CIA Directors are on record to release him. RELEASE HIM.

You and other "dyed in the wool" USA rah - rahs are so out of touch when it comes to the Pollard case. First of all he has spent enough time in prison for what he did and second of all your idiot vice -president makes a mockery of similar yet worse cases of spying. In case you did not see or read about it, Biden ...referring to the attractive woman being sent to Russia in exchange your spies said if it was up to him he would not want to send her back. Clearly a bad joke. Who jokes about spies ??? If it is such a big joke then let Pollard go too. Pollard giving details to an ally is surely not the same as giving information to Russia.
