By Dan Even Tags: Israel health Tel AvivA 26-year-old woman died Thursday morning due to a severe nut allergy prompted by eating chocolate spread at a Tel Aviv restaurant, after the staff promised her the chocolate did not contain nuts.
Hen Efrat, an Eilat resident, was with her friends at a Tel Aviv restaurant last week when they ordered a Belgian waffle with ice cream and chocolate.

According to her friends, she told the waitress that she was allergic to nuts and asked her to make sure the chocolate spread was not Nutella, which contains nuts. Efrat repeatedly asked the waitress to make sure the chocolate was nut-free, and even told her that she could die from it if it did indeed contain nuts.
Once Efrat began eating the dessert she realized the chocolate spread did contain nuts, and was immediately taken to a Tel Aviv hospital after she had a severe allergy attack.
After several hours she suffered from shortness of breath and lost consciousness. Doctors tried to stabilize her condition for several days but her condition worsened and on Thursday she was declared brain dead. Her family agreed to donate her organs.
Efrat's mother said Thursday that her daughter was very aware of her condition and was always extremely careful to check that her food did not contain nuts, and said the restaurant staff lied to her. "They poisoned my daughter." she said.

Unfortunately, I understand this situation all too well. Living in Israel, in 1982, my mother ate some salami which contained lots of soy, to which she was highly allergic. She always checked contents very carefully before she ate anything. There was no mention of vegetable protein, soy, nothing...She died of allergic shock too, but at the age of 54. The kibbutz which criminally neglected to list the ingredients was fined an equivalent of $35. ..The loss destroyed our family and took an extremely intelligent, kind, highly skilled and very productive person out. There needs to be stronger consumer protections now! I'm so sad to hear about this young woman's senseless death and I do know how difficult this is for those who love her. My condolences to all.
That actually her own fault due to notifying she allergic to nuts. The restaurants need to just put sign up all items contain nut contents while being processed. Karoon Ewe Morgandine
The waitress and the restaurant must be held liable for their carelessness..
Sorry, but the girl was being negligent too... when you know you can die if the chocolate is Nutella, you DO NOT order waffles at restaurants, just in case. She was essentially putting her life in the hands of a waitress she had never met before, would YOU do it ? I wouldn't.
This is why I refuse to be an organ donor- in this case, there's a significant chance her organ/s could save the life of somone who goes on to dish up lethal food to people who go out to enjoy themselves.
Despite being an Italian product, the name is taken from english NUT, because the main ingredient is hazelnut... now, that's something everybody should know, since it's pictured on every jar!!!! It's a very sad story, but it's so absurd that... ok, i better stop...
I agree with you 100%
Waiters do not have PhD's in allergic medicine and food science. A person with a potentially fatal allergy relies on them? Most would not.
Nut allergies are very serious. Foodstuffs are rarely properly labelled and are rarely not labelled in both official languages: Hebrew and Arabic. The restaurant owner and the food industry must start taking these allergies seriously too.
this is a good example about ethics in israel... the restaurant owner payed the waitress probably only tip if at all (so that he can afford a jeep to tear down the little nature that is left in israel) ... the waitress went to work very angry because she has to work for very little money, to be able to share a little very expensive apartment with three others... take a restaurant, take a building company, take shop or take any other service-orientated business this is the normal case in this country....
The reataurant has to close and the waitress jailed.
I have allergies, too, but not food allergies. I don't fully understand your comment.
I cannot believe anyone with a severe allergy does not carry an epipen with her at all times. While her mother was religious in checking her food, the poor girl did not have the appropriate medication to deal with this....terrible as it was easily avoided. Adrenaline (epinephrine) cannot help you if you do not have it with you. Keep the adrenaline (epinephrine) in a clearly marked robust pouch or case so that it is easy to keep with you. Protect it from light and from high temperatures. In hot climates, keep the container out of direct sunlight and overheated locations such as parked cars. For example in a bag of beach things you can keep it wrapped in several layers of clothing, but still rapidly retrievable by tying one end of a cord to the container and the other end to the handle of the beach bag.
A real tragedy, my heart goes out to her family. Unfortunately this is typical of israeli establishments: complete disinterest in the requests of customers, thinking they can simply lie and get away with it. Shut this place down and come down harsh on the owners.
This is clearly a case of not caring enough about a life-and-death situation. Criminal negligence fits the bill.
Let's just say you're "fooled" by the product name. A simple web search of Nutella takes you to their webpage which calls their product "The Original Hazelnut Spread." Pretty likely it says so on the packaging, as well.
Ha'aretz, and every other medium, should publish the name of the restaurant, so it can be boycotted.
Just listen to what you are saying. Nuts are kosher and even if the nuts would have had a kosher stamp she would still have died. You are a nut.
To the best of my knowledge Nutella is kosher and the nuts in it will kill anyone who suffers from a severe allergy.
Nutella is KOSHER!!! It also is made with HazelNUTS
eating kosher hazelnuts would have triggered an allergic reaction in this poor girl. Your comment is as stupid as it is insensitive. My sympathy is with Hen and her family.
This is terribly sad and outrageous. I would never trust a member of the waitstaff to be knowledgeable about what they are serving. In the best case, they're simply mistaken, and in the worst case they didn't bother to check. Some people consider people with requests to leave out certain ingredients to be "difficult" and ignore them on purpose. Hope that someone is held responsible for this poor girl's death.
restaurant should be closed and sued.
My wife is also allergic to some food, especially lacto-protein etc. She also suffers with terrible stomach pain when some stupid untrained employee told her this is absolutely free of milk. The day will come and will hit someone face.
it happened to me yesterday in paris where a restaurant served me hidden tomatoes that i fortunately discovered before eating as i am highly allergic but i try never to eat without my medecine in case that ...
Both the waitress and the restaurant owners must be brought to book.with an exemplary sentence that will act as a warning that one does not play roulette with the life of customers .My thoughts and condolences go to Efrat's family.
Sue them for causing the death of this young woman. They killed her for the profit and out of willing ignorance. And what ignorance, at that! Even my 3-year old niece knows Nutella is made from nuts.
Ms Efrat, i'm afraid, is also to blame for her own death, however distasteful that sounds. If one has an allergy that serious, they can't simply rely on the word of a stranger. If you're willing to risk your life by eating at restaurants in the first place, at least order dishes that you know absolutely cannot have nuts, yet she ordered chocolate spread!! I would be very surprised if anyone is criminally charged in this case. Chefs cannot be charged with manslaughter for mistakingly reaching for the wrong jar of chocolate, unless the restaurant specifically promotes itself as a nut-free establishment. Why, perhaps if the chef has even used the nut free spread, the knife he used may have just been used in the other one and that would have killed her also. And where was her Epipen? May she rest in peace.
